On YouTube, use Live Control Room; on Twitch, start with Creator Dashboard, including Stream Manager and Analytics. The live count is different from playbacks and from the processed report you see after a stream ends.
What “concurrent viewers” tells you
Concurrent viewers are the people watching at the same time. YouTube defines the metric as “the number of simultaneous viewers.” It is the useful number when you want to know how large your audience is at this moment—not how many times the video has been started.

- Concurrent viewers: simultaneous viewers at a particular time during the broadcast.
- Peak concurrent viewers: the highest simultaneous-viewer count reached during the stream.
- Average concurrent viewers: the average simultaneous audience over a reporting period.
- Playbacks: starts of the video, not a count of people watching simultaneously.
Chat messages and likes can help you understand activity, but neither is a viewer count. Keep the metric’s name in view when comparing numbers.
Track viewers live on YouTube
During the broadcast
- Open YouTube Live Control Room for the active stream.
- Check the real-time analytics area for concurrent viewers. YouTube’s live metrics for mobile live streams also include duration, chat messages, and likes.
- Use the concurrent-viewer figure as the current simultaneous audience. It can change while people join or leave.
After the broadcast
- In YouTube Studio, open Content > Live.
- Select the completed stream, then open Analytics > Engagement.
- Review the video-level concurrent-viewer report, which YouTube says is available within minutes after the stream ends.
The after-stream figure is not guaranteed to match what you saw live. YouTube says Analytics data is processed and despammed and measures different information from Live Control Room data. Use Live Control Room for the in-broadcast reading and the video’s Analytics report for its processed post-stream view. YouTube’s live analytics guidance describes the live metrics; its metrics guide distinguishes average and peak concurrent viewers.

Track viewers live on Twitch
Open the Twitch Creator Dashboard, Twitch’s home for streaming tools. Its Stream Manager is the live-management area, while Analytics provides viewer statistics across a selected date range. For a completed broadcast, Twitch’s Stream Summary provides performance statistics for an individual stream.
Twitch’s dashboard labels and layout can change, so use the current Stream Manager and Analytics areas rather than relying on an assumed dock location. If you need the number during a broadcast, look for the live viewer metric in the current dashboard; use Analytics or Stream Summary when reviewing performance afterward.

Can you show a viewer count in OBS?
OBS is the production software; the authoritative live count comes from the streaming platform. For a straightforward check, keep the platform’s dashboard open alongside OBS. If you want a panel inside OBS, one optional Twitch-specific example is StreamScouter, which advertises a real-time analytics dashboard and a viewer-statistics panel that can be added as an OBS browser source. These are vendor claims, not an independent verification of accuracy.

StreamScouter says it uses Twitch API information and that data begins accumulating after sign-in. Before connecting a Twitch account, review the permissions requested and the service’s privacy details, and decide whether its stated data collection fits your needs. Its page listed a free tier and a Pro plan at $6.99/month when accessed in 2026; check the vendor’s current page for availability and pricing. This is a third-party Twitch option, not an official Twitch feature.

Why counts can differ
- Live versus processed data: YouTube’s Live Control Room and Analytics do not measure and process data in the same way, so their figures may differ.
- Different metrics: a playback total, peak concurrent viewers, and average concurrent viewers answer different questions.
- Different platforms: this guidance does not establish a reliable official counter that merges Twitch, YouTube, and other services into one synchronized audience total. Treat a third-party combined number as a tool-generated aggregate, not a canonical count.
