An automatic application tracker can record many submissions for you, but it will not reliably capture every job on every site. Use one spreadsheet or dashboard as your master list, check that each new application appears, and add missing entries manually. Include the employer, role, application date, job link or source, status, and next action so the tracker helps you follow through—not just collect entries.
Set up one master record
Choose a single place to check: a spreadsheet, a dedicated tracker dashboard, or a job-board account view backed by a cross-site log. Keeping one master record avoids splitting your application history across browser extensions, email, and multiple job-board accounts.

For each application, record the company, role, date submitted, job link or source, current status, and a note or next action. Location, salary, recruiter contact details, and other notes can help you compare opportunities or remember context, but they are optional for basic follow-up. Some trackers include fields such as location and salary; check what your chosen tool actually records. Job Application Tracker Google Sheets and OwlApply describe their own tracker features.

Check what the automatic tool can capture
Before relying on an extension or service, check which job boards, applicant tracking systems, and submission routes it supports. Coverage can depend on both the website and how you apply. For example, the Chrome Web Store listing for Job Application Tracker, updated September 22, 2026, describes logging LinkedIn Easy Apply, Workday, and confirmed Greenhouse submissions. It also says LinkedIn Easy Apply detection requires an English-language interface. Those are claims about that specific extension, not a guarantee about other tools or every application route.
#1 Best Overall
Applications that send you to an employer’s separate website may not be detected. Some trackers distinguish between applications submitted through their own autofill flow and outside applications that must be added manually; OwlApply describes both routes in its product information. Treat any automatic log as a convenience, then verify that the entry is present and accurate.
Use a simple, consistent status pipeline
Pick a small set of labels that makes sense to you, such as Applied, Screening, Interview, Offer, Rejected, and Withdrawn. These are practical examples, not an industry-wide standard: tracker products use overlapping but different status labels. If a status changes, update it and add the date or a short explanation when that history will help you remember what happened.
Rank #2
Do not change an application’s status just because time has passed. Update it when you receive a message or there is another concrete event, such as an interview invitation or a decision. This keeps the list useful rather than turning it into a record of guesses.
Give each active application a next action
A status says where an application stands; a next action tells you what to do. For each active role, add a task and due date when appropriate. Examples include preparing for a scheduled interview, sending a thank-you note, following up after a stated response window, or waiting until an employer’s decision date.
A dedicated tracker may offer reminders, while a spreadsheet generally needs a calendar task or a regular manual review to prompt action. Choose a review cadence you can maintain, and use it to catch missing submissions and upcoming tasks—not to repeatedly revise statuses without new information.
Choose between a tracker, spreadsheet, or job-board view
These options can complement one another, but designate only one as the authoritative cross-site record.

| Option | Useful for | Limit to account for |
|---|---|---|
| Browser extension connected to a spreadsheet | Automatically logging supported submission events into a familiar, editable record. The Chrome Web Store listing describes one product that uses Google Sheets and Drive APIs. | Capture depends on supported sites and submission routes; confirm the entry and keep a manual fallback. The listing’s feature descriptions are vendor claims, not independent reliability testing. |
| Dedicated tracker dashboard | Keeping applications in a visual pipeline, with notes or reminders where the product offers them. OwlApply describes automatic additions through its autofill and manual additions for other applications. | Check the product’s workflow, data handling, and export options before making it your master record. Its feature descriptions do not establish coverage of every job site. |
| Job-board account view | Checking activity associated with that job board. A MassHire Boston Career Center presentation points job seekers to Indeed My Jobs and labels the section “Track your applications.” | A board-specific page is not evidence that it captures applications submitted elsewhere. Use a separate cross-site log if you apply across multiple services. |
| Spreadsheet maintained by hand | Controlling your own fields and recording applications from any source you can document. | You must add entries and create your own reminders or calendar tasks; it does not provide automatic capture by itself. |
The MassHire presentation offers useful advice beyond the tool choice: focus on screening jobs carefully and tailoring high-quality applications rather than treating application volume as the goal. Its publication date is not stated in the document. Read the MassHire Boston Career Center presentation.

Before connecting a Google account, cloud storage, or email, review what permissions the tool requests, where it says data is stored, how long it retains information, and whether you can delete or export your records. Check whether email access is optional or required. For example, the Chrome Web Store listing says its extension reads the job page being applied on and uses Google Sheets and Drive APIs; the Job Application Tracker Google Sheets vendor describes an optional Gmail script. These are product-specific descriptions, not independent security audits, so review the current permission screen and privacy terms yourself.

A practical submission routine
- Before applying: Confirm the tracker supports the site and the submission method you are about to use. Note the role and job link in your master record if you want a safeguard against a missed capture.
- Submit the application: Complete the employer’s application process and wait for its confirmation or completion page.
- Check the tracker: Verify the employer, role, date, link or source, and status. Correct inaccurate details.
- Add anything missing: Enter the application manually if it was not captured or used an unsupported route.
- Set the next action: Add a due date for an interview task, follow-up, or stated decision date when relevant.
- Review regularly: Check the master record for new entries and due tasks; update a status only when you have new information.
If you need a category-level comparison when choosing software, compare supported submission events, manual-entry options, status history, reminders, data permissions and storage, exportability, and email access. Product capabilities can change, so confirm compatibility and permissions in the current listing or product documentation before connecting an account. An example of a workflow connecting LinkedIn, Indeed, and Google Sheets is described by GrowwStacks; that description is not an independent comparison or test of tracker accuracy.
