If you choose to try it, treat it as a way to notice context—not a scorecard for meals or a verdict on how you feel. If you have an eating disorder now or in the past, or logging is making you anxious or rigid around food, do not continue on your own; talk with a qualified health professional.
When tracking may help—and when it may not
Self-monitoring can be useful in some settings, but it is not a universal recommendation. NICE’s guidance on digital and mobile health interventions includes food diaries as one way people may review progress toward diet or activity goals. The same guidance says to consider approaches without self-monitoring when someone is at risk of developing or resuming an eating disorder or another unhealthy behavior.

That distinction matters: a tool that helps one person notice patterns may increase pressure or preoccupation for another. A diary also cannot diagnose an eating disorder or prove that a particular food caused a change in mood.

Tracking in treatment is different from tracking alone
NICE describes self-monitoring within specific guided self-help and CBT-ED treatment recommendations. In those contexts, monitoring can help someone examine eating behavior, difficulties, goals, or cues for binge eating as part of a care plan. Those recommendations are not evidence that everyone should keep a food-and-mood log.
#1 Best Overall
The Royal College of Psychiatrists specifically cautions that, in binge-eating disorder, a food diary should not be used to punish oneself or restrict food. If a clinician or registered dietitian familiar with eating disorders recommends monitoring, ask what to record, how it will be used, and when to review or stop it.
If you decide to try a low-pressure log
There is no universally established safe schedule, duration, or template. If you have decided with appropriate support that logging may help, keep the record broad and optional. For example, you might note a meal or snack in general terms, the situation or feeling around it, and an observation you want to discuss with your clinician.

- FLEXIBLE FOR ANY LIFESTYLE OR JOURNEY: Use daily or weekly — your pace, your rules. Open-ended format adapts to mindful eating, food awareness, or structured eating plans like Keto, Paleo, or Whole30. Compact and portable for home, work, travel, or appointments.
- Use neutral language; avoid labeling foods as “good” or “bad.”
- Do not default to calorie counts, weighing portions, targets, streaks, or mandatory daily entries.
- Record only what serves the purpose you agreed on. You can skip an entry or pause.
- Use the log to raise questions, not to infer cause and effect from one meal and one mood.
These are cautious practical suggestions, not a validated method or a substitute for professional advice.
Choose a format that does not add pressure
A paper notebook and a digital app are both possible formats; the cited guidance does not establish that one is inherently safer. NICE names food diaries as one self-monitoring option but does not endorse a particular journal, app, or product.

Consider whether a format lets you avoid calorie or weight metrics, keep entries brief, pause easily, and share notes with a clinician if tracking is part of care. The most suitable format is the one that supports the agreed purpose without making you feel compelled to log.

Stop or pause if recording increases anxiety, preoccupation, rigid rules, guilt, urges to restrict, or pressure to compensate for eating. Strict habits or routines around food, as well as mood changes such as withdrawal, anxiety, or depression, are among possible eating-disorder warning signs listed by the NHS; they are not, by themselves, a diagnosis.
