Use Ultrasound.money for the aggregate supply picture, Etherscan for block-level checks, and Beaconcha.in for validator-specific rewards and penalties. Record each reading’s metric, time window, units, and timestamp before comparing it.
The key network calculation is net supply change = issuance − base-fee burn − other protocol reductions. A validator’s personal return is a different measure because it can include consensus rewards and proposer tips, while the network-wide supply figure counts all issuance and all burns.

What you are actually tracking
ETH does not have a fixed maximum supply. Its supply rises when the protocol issues ETH and falls when ETH is burned or removed through validator penalties. The direction over any period depends on the balance between those flows, so a statement such as “ETH is deflationary” is only meaningful when it names a time range.
Consensus-layer issuance
Since The Merge in September 2022, protocol issuance occurs on Ethereum’s proof-of-stake consensus layer. Validators receive rewards for timely attestations, proposing blocks, and participating in sync committees. Ethereum’s execution layer no longer creates ETH through proof-of-work mining. Ethereum.org summarizes this change as: “Since The Merge, issuance on the execution layer is now zero.”

This does not mean that all validator income is newly created ETH. Consensus rewards are issuance, but a proposer’s priority fees come from users who already paid ETH. Keep those categories separate whenever you explain staking returns or calculate supply.
Base-fee burns
EIP-1559 divides transaction fees into a protocol-set base fee and an optional priority fee. The base fee is destroyed rather than paid to a validator. The EIP-1559 specification states: “The base fee is always burned (i.e. it is destroyed by the protocol).” The priority fee, often called a tip, goes to the block proposer and is not burned.
The base fee changes with demand relative to the block gas target. A busy run of blocks can push the base fee higher and burn more ETH per unit of gas. Quiet periods reduce the base fee and usually reduce burn, although total burn also depends on how much gas is consumed.

Penalties, slashing, and proposer income
Validators can lose ETH through ordinary inactivity penalties or the more severe slashing process. These reductions are distinct from transaction-fee burns. A block proposer can also receive unburnt gas fees, so a validator’s observed income may contain consensus rewards plus priority fees even though only the consensus reward portion is protocol issuance.
A withdrawal is another category that is easy to misread. It moves an existing validator balance to an execution-layer address; it is not fresh issuance. Record withdrawals separately from rewards, penalties and burns.
The accounting model
Choose one interval—such as a calendar day, a week, or a particular epoch—and measure every flow over exactly that interval. Then calculate:
Net ETH change = consensus-layer issuance − EIP-1559 base-fee burn − validator penalties/slashing

Why the interval matters
A lifetime cumulative burn cannot be compared with one day of issuance. Likewise, a dashboard’s rolling 24-hour value is not directly comparable with a weekly issuance total. Write down the start and end time, timezone, and units for each observation. When a service offers several definitions of supply or issuance, preserve the label exactly as displayed instead of silently combining unlike metrics.

Epoch-based data needs the same care. Validator rewards and penalties are issued each epoch, approximately every 6.4 minutes. A daily report therefore combines roughly a day’s worth of epochs, while a single epoch view is only a short snapshot. Make sure a selected epoch range covers the same boundaries used for any daily burn or issuance figure.

Ethereum.org names these services for aggregate supply tracking, block exploration and validator statistics respectively. Their current interface formulas and refresh schedules are not independently documented here, so quote the metric as the service presents it and include when you observed it. A dashboard can change while you are writing; a timestamp makes your report reproducible.
Do these 3 things before closing this tab:
1Fix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitches2Clear out junk files and repair common Windows errors3Scan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minuteStep-by-step workflow for a reliable snapshot
- Define the question and period. Decide whether you need network supply, a validator’s return, or a block-by-block burn analysis. Set a precise start and end time, and use the same period for every flow. Specify UTC or another timezone explicitly.
- Take an aggregate reading. Open Ultrasound.money and note the supply, issuance, burn and net figures that correspond to your chosen range. Copy the dashboard’s labels, units and timestamp into your notes. If the page displays both current rates and cumulative totals, identify which one you selected.
- Separate the fee components. Use EIP-1559 documentation to verify that the base fee is burned and the priority fee is paid to the proposer. Do not use a “total fees” number as a burn total unless the service explicitly defines it that way.
- Inspect validator data when needed. In Beaconcha.in, identify the validator index and select the epochs covering your interval. Review attestations, proposals, sync-committee duties, rewards, penalties and withdrawals separately. A validator total is not automatically a network issuance total.
- Check representative blocks. Use Etherscan to inspect blocks inside the interval. Confirm the block timestamp, gas used and base fee, and use those observations to explain unusually high or low burn periods. A few blocks can illustrate a trend, but they do not replace a complete interval total.
- Reconcile the flows. Compare issuance and burn totals that cover the same interval. Subtract penalties or slashing when the question is total protocol supply, and keep proposer tips in a separate income line. If totals do not match, check units, boundaries, and whether a figure is rolling or cumulative before assuming an error.
- Publish with a timestamp. ETH metrics move continuously. State when the reading was taken, which range was selected, and whether the value is instantaneous, rolling or cumulative.
Understanding staking rewards without confusing them with issuance
Consensus rewards are issued each epoch, approximately every 6.4 minutes according to the Ethereum Foundation Staking Launchpad validator FAQ accessed October 13, 2026. The reward cycle is therefore much shorter than a day, but dashboards may aggregate many epochs into daily or monthly views. A report should identify whether it uses epoch totals, a daily sum, or a displayed annualized rate.
What determines a validator’s base reward
Ethereum’s validator-reward documentation describes a base reward calculated from a validator’s effective balance and the network’s total active balance. The per-validator base reward declines as total active balance rises. More validators can therefore increase aggregate issuance while reducing the base reward earned by each validator, all else equal.
Rewards depend on performance. Timely attestations, successful block proposals and sync-committee participation have different reward components. Missing duties can reduce rewards or create penalties. A validator’s displayed return may also include proposer priority fees, which are not consensus-layer issuance and do not alter total supply.
Do not turn one validator’s reward into a network-wide inflation rate. To estimate network issuance, use the aggregate issuance measure for the interval. To describe a validator, retain its index, duty history, effective balance context and epoch range, then report consensus rewards, proposer receipts and penalties as separate lines.
What’s actually slowing this PC down?
Pick the symptom - the matching free tool is one click away.
Withdrawals are not new issuance
A withdrawal moves a validator’s existing balance from the consensus layer to an execution-layer address. It is not a fresh supply increase. When reviewing Beaconcha.in records, distinguish withdrawal amounts from rewards earned during the same period. A large withdrawal can change where ETH is held without changing total ETH supply.
How EIP-1559 burns affect supply
The base fee adjusts with demand relative to Ethereum’s gas target. When blocks are busier than the target, the protocol raises the base fee; when demand is lower, it reduces it. Every unit of gas charged at that base fee is burned. The priority fee remains a payment to the proposer.
Reading a block-level burn
- Open the block in Etherscan and record its timestamp and gas used.
- Record the base fee per gas shown for that block.
- Multiply gas used by the base fee, keeping units consistent. Gas is denominated in wei; one gwei equals one billion wei and one ETH equals 1018 wei.
- Compare the resulting burn estimate with the block explorer’s displayed burn field, allowing for rounding or interface conventions.
For example, if you use a gas figure expressed in units of gas and a base fee expressed in wei per gas, the product is wei. Divide by 1018 only after multiplication if you want an ETH result. Mixing gwei and wei before the calculation creates a billion-fold unit error.

This block calculation explains a single block. For a day or week, sum the base-fee burn across all blocks or use a clearly defined aggregate dashboard value. If you sample only a few blocks, describe the result as an illustration rather than a complete burn total.

Why burn can exceed issuance
High transaction demand can produce enough base-fee burn to offset or exceed consensus issuance. During quieter periods, issuance can exceed burn. Neither state is permanent because staking participation changes issuance and network demand changes burn.
Historical figures: useful context, not current rates
Ethereum.org’s Merge explainer, last updated June 6, 2026, provides illustrative historical estimates. Before The Merge, miner issuance was described as approximately 13,000 ETH per day. With about 14 million ETH staked, the explainer estimated approximately 1,700 ETH per day of staking issuance and an approximately 88% reduction after The Merge. These are source-published historical figures, not live 2026 rates.
The same explainer used an average gas price of at least 16 gwei for a day as an illustration of burn that could offset the then-estimated 1,700 ETH of daily issuance. That threshold depended on the issuance and activity assumptions at the time; it is not a universal break-even number. Current staking participation, validator performance and gas demand can all produce different results.
How to interpret dashboard numbers
Instantaneous versus cumulative values
A displayed “issuance rate” may be a current pace, a rolling average or a cumulative total divided by time. A “burn” figure may cover the selected window or the entire chain history. Read the time-range control and unit before using the number in a calculation.

Supply definitions
Supply dashboards can show total supply, circulating supply or a derived net-supply series. These labels are not interchangeable. Use the exact definition supplied by the service and avoid presenting a circulating-supply number as total protocol supply.
Timestamping live observations
For a reproducible note, record the service name, URL as displayed by your browser, metric label, range, timezone, value and UTC observation time. A later reader should be able to understand why the same dashboard no longer shows the identical number. Save the block range or epoch range when the service exposes it.

Checking duties and rewards
Search the validator index in Beaconcha.in and select the epochs in your study period. Review attestation effectiveness, proposal history and sync-committee assignments. Compare reward entries with missed duties rather than treating a single daily total as a guaranteed yield.

Proposal income can be intermittent. A validator that proposes no block in the selected period may have no priority-fee receipts even if its ordinary consensus duties were performed correctly. Conversely, a proposal can add proposer income that should not be mistaken for a change in the validator’s consensus issuance rate.
Finding penalties and slashing
Look for explicit penalty or slashing events in the validator record. A penalty reduces the validator balance through consensus rules; it is not an EIP-1559 burn. Slashing can also impose additional balance loss and temporary restrictions. Keep these events on a separate line in any supply worksheet.
Accounting for proposer tips
When a validator proposes a block, its execution-layer address may receive priority fees. Include those receipts when estimating the validator’s personal income, but exclude them from network issuance and burn calculations because they transfer existing ETH. The proposer’s receipt and the network’s base-fee destruction happen in the same block but represent different accounting events.
Independent reader supportYour contribution helps us test, update, and keep practical guides available for everyone.Common mistakes and how to correct them
- Calling all fees a burn. Correct it by separating the base fee from the priority fee; only the base fee is destroyed.
- Using a historical rate as today’s rate. Label the 13,000 ETH, 1,700 ETH, 88% and 16 gwei figures as historical illustrations from the June 6, 2026 Merge explainer.
- Comparing mismatched periods. Re-run the comparison with identical start and end times and compatible units.
- Calling validator yield equal to issuance. Add proposer tips only to personal income, and account for penalties and missed duties in validator performance.
- Ignoring validator-set size. Per-validator base rewards change as total active balance changes, even when aggregate issuance rises.
- Assuming ETH is always deflationary. State whether burn exceeded issuance during the specific interval you measured.
- Treating withdrawals as issuance. Classify withdrawals as transfers of an existing validator balance.
- Quoting an undated live value. Attach the observation timestamp, range, units and dashboard label.
- Mixing wei and gwei. Convert units before multiplying gas used by the base fee, and show the conversion in your notes.
- Subtracting a network burn from one validator’s return. Keep network supply accounting and individual-validator income in separate worksheets.
Worked calculation framework
Suppose you are preparing a weekly report. First, select a UTC start and end time exactly seven days apart. From an aggregate tracker, record consensus issuance and base-fee burn for that week. From validator records, total any penalties or slashing in the same period. Then apply:
Weekly net supply = weekly issuance − weekly base-fee burn − weekly penalties/slashing
For a validator report, create a separate line for consensus rewards, another for priority fees received from proposed blocks, and another for penalties. Do not subtract a network-wide burn from one validator’s return, and do not add the validator’s tip income to network issuance.
A practical worksheet can have columns for source, metric label, start time, end time, units, value, and observation time. Add a notes column for whether a value is instantaneous, rolling or cumulative. This simple record prevents a later comparison from silently combining a daily issuance rate, a lifetime burn total and an epoch-level reward.
Choosing the right level of precision
Use the aggregate dashboard when the question is whether supply rose or fell. Use Etherscan when you need to explain a burst of burn to a particular block or period of congestion. Use Beaconcha.in when the question concerns one validator’s duties, rewards, penalties, proposals or withdrawals. Combining all three is useful for an audit trail, but each source answers a different question.
If two services disagree, first compare their time windows, units, supply definitions and update times. A difference does not automatically indicate an error; one service may be showing a rolling rate while another reports a cumulative total. Preserve both labels and explain the definitional difference instead of averaging the numbers.
Best Value
No physical product is required for this work. Browser-based dashboards, a block explorer and validator records provide the relevant views. Hardware wallets, node hardware and generic Ethereum books do not substitute for matching intervals and definitions in the data.
Bottom line
Track ETH with separate lines for consensus-layer issuance, EIP-1559 base-fee burns, validator penalties or slashing, withdrawals and proposer priority fees. Use Ultrasound.money for the live aggregate view, Etherscan for block mechanics, and Beaconcha.in for validator detail. Date every observation, match intervals and definitions, convert units carefully, and treat historical Merge-era figures as context rather than current rates.
Frequently Asked Questions
What is the simplest formula for ETH’s net supply change?
For a matched interval, subtract EIP-1559 base-fee burns and validator penalties or slashing from consensus-layer issuance. Priority fees are proposer income and are not a supply reduction.
Where can I see live ETH issuance and burn information?
Ethereum.org identifies Ultrasound.money for real-time aggregate supply, issuance and burn tracking. Record the displayed metric, selected range, units and observation timestamp because values change continuously.
Are all Ethereum transaction fees burned?
No. EIP-1559 burns the base fee. The separate priority fee, or tip, is paid to the block proposer and is not burned.
How often are staking rewards and penalties issued?
The Ethereum Foundation Staking Launchpad validator FAQ describes rewards and penalties as issued each epoch, approximately every 6.4 minutes. Dashboards may aggregate many epochs into daily or monthly totals.
Why can aggregate issuance rise while an individual validator’s reward falls?
The validator set and total active balance affect the calculation. Aggregate issuance can grow as more ETH is staked, while the per-validator base reward declines as total active balance rises, all else equal.
Recommended Free Tools
Do validator withdrawals increase ETH supply?
No. A withdrawal transfers an existing validator balance to an execution-layer address. It should be recorded separately from newly issued rewards and from burns.
How do I calculate burn for one block?
Multiply the block’s gas used by its base fee per gas, keeping both in compatible units. The product is in wei when the base fee is in wei per gas; divide by 10^18 to express it in ETH, then compare with the explorer’s burn field.
Is ETH always deflationary after The Merge?
No. Burn can exceed issuance during periods of high transaction demand, while issuance can exceed burn during quieter periods. State the measured interval instead of making an undated claim.
What historical issuance figures are safe to quote?
Ethereum.org’s Merge explainer, last updated June 6, 2026, gives historical illustrations of approximately 13,000 ETH per day in pre-Merge miner issuance, approximately 1,700 ETH per day with about 14 million ETH staked, and an approximately 88% reduction after The Merge. It also used 16 gwei as a dated burn-offset illustration. None is a current rate.
