Read the manual for your exact model before applying force, fully open and lock any implement that is designed to lock, keep fingers out of pinch points and away from edges, and stop whenever a blade, plier, cutter, or driver slips or begins to fold.
The details vary substantially between models. Cutter materials, locking systems, driver bits, access to folded blades, and allowable force are not universal. The procedures below provide a safe baseline, then show how to verify the differences using manufacturer examples and manuals.

Start with the exact model, not a generic assumption
Find the model number and read its instructions before using it. Manufacturers often put several mechanisms in one family of tools: a blade may lock while the plier head does not, a cutter may have separate sections for soft and hardened wire, and a screwdriver may use an integrated bit or a removable driver. The Leatherman Military User Guide warns that a tool should not be used before its implements are fully extended, while the Leatherman Crunch guide explains that its blade must be fully extended for the lock to engage. Those are model-specific instructions, but they illustrate the general rule: confirm the operating sequence for your tool.
Open and close each implement slowly over a clear work surface before using it. Identify the locking button, liner, back lock, slip joint, or other retention feature. Some tools have no lock on the plier head or on certain small implements. Never infer that a lock exists because another multi-tool has one.

- Read the cutter section for permitted wire types, hardness, diameter, and replaceable-insert instructions.
- Confirm the correct bit or driver size and whether the driver accepts standard bits.
- Look for warnings about eye protection, pinch points, cleaning, and corrosion.
Leatherman’s official military guide summarizes the hazard plainly: “Caution: This product contains one or more sharp blades or pinch points.” Treat that warning as applying every time you handle a multi-tool, including when it is supposedly closed.
Set up a safe working position
Control the workpiece first
Place the item you are cutting, gripping, or fastening on a stable surface whenever possible. Do not hold a small piece in your free hand directly in front of a blade or cutter. Clamp or support it, and position your body so a slip sends the tool into empty space rather than toward your hand, leg, or another person.
Use light, deliberate pressure
Multi-tools have short handles and compact pivots. They can generate useful leverage, but their small size makes sudden movement more likely when a fastener is stuck or a wire is harder than expected. Begin with the minimum force that completes the task. If the implement flexes, the handles shift, or the tip starts to cam out, stop and choose a dedicated tool rated for the load.
Recommended Free Tools
Protect eyes and hands
Wear safety glasses when cutting wire, scraping material, or doing work that could release chips. Keep your nonworking hand behind the cutting path and away from the hinge. Gloves can reduce abrasion, but they do not make a blade or pinch point safe; bulky gloves may also reduce grip and make a slip more likely. Keep children away from an open tool and from loose bits or cut wire.
How to use a multi-tool blade safely
Opening and checking the blade
- Hold the handles so the blade’s edge is directed away from you and everyone nearby.
- Open the blade with your thumb or the intended nail nick or opening hole; keep fingertips outside the blade’s arc.
- Continue until the blade is fully extended. If the model has a lock, verify that it has engaged by gently testing the spine or locking control without putting your fingers near the edge.
- Inspect the pivot and edge for debris, looseness, or damage. Do not use a blade that will not lock as designed.
A partially opened folding blade can fold toward your fingers when cutting resistance rises. If you cannot confirm that the locking mechanism is engaged, close the tool and use a different implement or a dedicated fixed blade.
Cut away from the body
Use a controlled stroke away from yourself and from anyone within the possible travel of the blade. Gerber’s safe-use guidance states: “Always cut away from your body, or from the body of any other person around which the knife is being applied.” Keep the blade’s point and edge visible; do not cut through material you cannot see.
Use the blade for slicing or whittling tasks within the manual’s intended scope. Do not hammer on the spine, pry with the edge, twist the blade in a cut, or use it as a chisel. Gerber specifically warns against using a knife to hammer or pry. Those loads can chip the edge, bend the blade, or defeat the lock.

Closing the blade
Move fingers clear of the edge and the handle channel before releasing the lock. Close the blade slowly while watching the entire path. Never catch a falling blade with your hand, and never press on the edge to force it shut. Wipe away resin, grit, or metal filings that could prevent full closure or cause the blade to open inside a pocket.
Using pliers without crushing or slipping
Choose the correct jaw position
Needlenose jaws are useful for reaching narrow spaces and positioning small parts; blunt or standard jaws provide a broader grip. Place the workpiece deep enough in the jaw area that it cannot slide toward the hinge. Keep fingers behind the handles and outside the closing path.
Close the handles gradually and check that the jaws remain aligned. Do not twist the tool sideways while squeezing. A sideways load can bend the jaws or eject the workpiece. For delicate surfaces, use a protective layer or a tool designed for that material rather than relying on a multi-tool’s bare serrations.
Understand locking-plier differences
Some designs include locking pliers that clamp independently of hand pressure; others have ordinary pliers that remain under your grip. A lock on the plier mechanism does not mean every other implement locks. Read the release and adjustment instructions for a locking-plier model, and release it while keeping your fingers clear of the sudden handle movement.
Do not exceed the model’s limits
Never estimate capacity from jaw size. The manual may limit the material, diameter, or amount of force. If the jaws start to spring, the pivot binds, or the handles bend, stop. A dedicated pair of pliers or a vise is safer for high-force work.
Using wire cutters and cutter notches
Match the cutter section to the wire
The Leatherman Crunch guide distinguishes regular cutters for softer grades of wire from a hard-wire notch for hardened wire. That distinction belongs to that model; it is not a universal rule for every multi-tool. Before cutting, identify the cutter section named in your manual and verify the allowed wire type and size.
Place the wire squarely in the cutter rather than at the extreme tip. Support long wire so it cannot whip when severed, and wear eye protection because the cut end may fly. Keep your free hand behind the jaws. Squeeze smoothly instead of rocking the handles.

Know when to stop
Do not cut wire that exceeds the manual’s stated limit, wire of unknown hardness, hardened cable, or live electrical conductors unless the tool is specifically rated and the work follows applicable electrical-safety procedures. A multi-tool’s metal handles and jaws are not insulation. For energized circuits, use equipment rated for the voltage and follow lockout and verification procedures.
If the cutter leaves a deep notch, requires repeated rocking, or shows a chipped edge, stop using it. Replaceable cutter inserts must be replaced with the maker’s specified parts; do not grind them until their geometry no longer matches the jaws.
Using the screwdriver or driver without slipping
Select and seat the right tip
- Identify the fastener head and select a bit that fills the recess without rocking. A driver that is too small damages the head; one that is too large will not seat.
- Align the driver shaft with the fastener axis. Keep your wrist behind the handle rather than pushing from the side.
- Apply firm downward pressure, then turn slowly. Maintain engagement through the first few rotations.
- Stop immediately if the bit cams out, the fastener head deforms, or the implement begins to fold. Re-seat, change the bit, or use a dedicated driver.
Account for different driver systems
Manufacturer product pages show why no universal torque rating can be assumed. The Leatherman Wave+ lists multiple drivers and locking features for every implement except the plier head, while other models use different driver arrangements. The Leatherman Crunch guide describes its own locking and implement operation. Check whether your driver locks open, whether a bit is retained magnetically or mechanically, and whether the handle gives enough clearance for the job.
Do not use a compact driver as a pry bar, punch, or substitute for a ratchet. If a fastener is seized, use penetrating treatment and the correctly sized dedicated driver, or seek a tool designed for high torque. The reviewed manufacturer material does not establish a universal torque or fastener-capacity number for multi-tools.

Opening, folding, and carrying the tool
Open implements one at a time
Work over a clear area so an implement cannot snag clothing or another object. Keep the hinge away from fingertips, and do not open a blade while holding the tool by a single thin handle. If another implement blocks access, close it first rather than forcing the blade past it.

Close and inspect before storage
Remove debris, retract or fold every implement fully, and check that no bit or blade protrudes. Store the tool so a pocket clip, sheath, or case cannot press an opening mechanism. Do not place an open tool on a seat, workbench edge, or floor where someone may grab it without seeing the blade.
Check local carry rules
Carry laws depend on the jurisdiction, the exact blade and locking arrangement, location, and purpose. Leatherman’s European FAQ discusses the company’s interpretation of Germany’s Weapons Act §42a and expressly notes that authorities or courts may interpret the law differently; it is not legal advice. For Germany, read the current law and official guidance for the place you will enter. For any other country, state, or city, check the current local rule before carrying a locking-blade multi-tool in public, at work, on transport, or at a venue.

Clean before oiling
Gerber recommends removing debris and moisture before applying a light oil. Brush grit from the pivot and locking surfaces, wipe the tool dry, and use only enough lubricant to restore smooth movement. Excess oil attracts dust and can migrate onto a blade or a workpiece.
Deal with saltwater and corrosion
Stainless steel resists corrosion but is not rust-proof. Leatherman’s maintenance guidance recommends rinsing, drying, and lubricating after saltwater or marine exposure. Dry the hinge, cutter recesses, and any hidden channels completely; trapped moisture can cause corrosion that is not visible when the tool is folded.
Sharpen the appropriate edge
Follow the maker’s method for the blade geometry. Plain edges and serrated edges require different sharpening approaches; forcing a flat stone across serrations can remove the working profile. If the edge is chipped, warped, or loose at the pivot, have it serviced or replace the implement rather than removing excessive metal.
Troubleshooting common unsafe conditions
The blade will not lock
Stop using it. Clear visible debris, confirm that the blade is fully extended, and consult the model manual. Do not tape, wedge, or otherwise defeat a failed lock. If the mechanism still does not engage, contact the manufacturer or a qualified service provider.
Do these 3 things before closing this tab:
1Fix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitches2Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problems3Scan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minuteThe driver keeps slipping
Check bit size, fastener damage, alignment, and downward pressure. If the recess is rounded or the fastener is seized, change methods instead of increasing force. A dedicated driver, extractor, or replacement fastener may be required.

The cutter will not sever the wire
Stop squeezing harder. Verify the wire type and diameter against the manual, move the wire into the correct cutter section, and inspect for damaged inserts. Unknown or hardened material beyond the rating belongs in a cutter designed for it.
The hinge is stiff or gritty
Rinse or brush away debris as the manufacturer allows, dry thoroughly, and apply a small amount of light oil. Do not force the pivot through a gritty spot; abrasive particles can damage the joint and locking surfaces.
A practical pre-use and post-use checklist
- Model identified and manual read.
- Blade and other sharp edges pointed away during opening and work.
- Locking implements fully extended and tested without touching the edge.
- Hands clear of hinges, pinch points, and the cutter’s exit path.
- Eye protection in place where wire or debris may fly.
- Wire, fastener, and material within the exact model’s stated limits.
- Driver tip fully seated and shaft aligned.
- Dedicated tool selected when the task needs substantial torque, prying, hammering, or electrical insulation.
- All implements closed, clean, dry, and secure before storage or carry.
When a multi-tool is the wrong tool
Choose a dedicated tool when the job involves high torque, repeated production work, large or hardened material, live electrical systems, structural prying, hammering, or a blade that must remain fixed under heavy load. A multi-tool is most useful for controlled, moderate tasks where its compact size and several functions outweigh the ergonomic and strength advantages of full-size tools. Stopping early is a safety decision, not a failure to use the multi-tool.

Frequently asked questions
Can I use a folding blade if it feels tight but does not lock?
No. Tightness is not a lock. Use the blade only when the model’s locking system fully engages and the manual permits that use.
Are replaceable cutters interchangeable between multi-tools?
Not automatically. Use only inserts specified for the exact model; jaw geometry, fastener size, and hardness rating can differ.
Is stainless steel maintenance-free?
No. Stainless steel is corrosion-resistant, not rust-proof. Rinse, dry, and lubricate after saltwater exposure and remove debris before storage.
Can I carry a locking-blade multi-tool everywhere?
No single answer applies worldwide. Rules vary by jurisdiction and circumstance. Check current local law for the exact tool and location; manufacturer commentary, including the Germany-specific discussion of §42a, is not legal advice.
Frequently Asked Questions
What should I do if a multi-tool blade opens inside my pocket?
Stop carrying the tool until the opening mechanism and lock have been inspected. Keep it in a sheath or case that prevents pressure on the mechanism, and have a defective lock serviced rather than modifying it.
How much torque can a multi-tool screwdriver handle?
The reviewed manufacturer material gives no universal torque rating. Use only the force allowed by your model’s manual, and switch to a dedicated driver for seized or high-torque fasteners.
