Track each safety-audit finding from identification through verified closure in one central register. Record the hazard, planned correction, accountable owner, target date, current status, and evidence; then review progress, escalate delays according to risk, and close the item only after a competent person verifies the correction. The exact legal deadline and recordkeeping rules depend on the applicable standard, citation, and jurisdiction.
What tracking corrective actions means
A finding is not resolved simply because someone has been assigned work or marked a task complete. A useful process records management’s disposition, gives the work an owner and timetable, documents implementation, and checks that the correction addresses the hazard.

OSHA’s process-safety guidance says, “To control the corrective action process, the employer should consider the use of a tracking system.” This appears in OSHA’s Appendix C to 29 CFR 1910.119, which is explicitly nonmandatory guidance—not a universal legal requirement for every employer. It recommends documenting recommendations, priorities, timetables, responsibilities, and management’s decisions, including the rationale when management determines that no action is necessary.

How to track corrective actions after a safety audit
- Review and prioritize the finding. Discuss the issue with management and workers familiar with the task, equipment, or location. Record enough context to identify where the hazard occurs and what the audit found. Set priority according to the hazard and applicable requirements; do not treat every finding as having the same urgency.
- Choose and document a disposition. State whether the response is corrective work, further assessment, or no action. For a decision not to act, record the reason and who made or approved that decision.
- Define the work and any interim control. Describe the permanent correction clearly. If it cannot be completed immediately, document temporary measures needed while it is pending, along with any dependencies, resources, or approvals that could affect completion.
- Assign one accountable owner and a target date. Name the person responsible for coordinating completion, rather than relying on a department name alone. Set a realistic date based on the work and applicable requirements. Record why a date changes instead of silently moving it.
- Update status and escalate delays. Review the register on a cadence suited to the risk and expected duration of the work. Flag overdue high-risk items for management attention and note the escalation and resulting decision.
- Attach implementation evidence. Keep records that show what was done, such as a revised procedure, maintenance or work order, training record, engineering report, photograph, or inspection result. These are practical examples, not a prescribed evidence list in the cited OSHA appendix.
- Verify before closing. Have a competent reviewer check that the correction addresses the finding and that the control is operating. Record the reviewer, date, evidence, and any follow-up needed. Choose a verification method appropriate to the hazard; OSHA’s cited guidance does not prescribe one universal test.
- Close and use the learning. Mark an item closed only when implementation is documented and verification is complete. Where appropriate, feed recurring or broader issues into program evaluation and prevention work.
What to include in a corrective action log
OSHA’s Field SHMS Manual, Chapter 2, provides a sample hazard-tracking log with five basic fields. It is an example from OSHA’s own safety and health management system, not a universally mandated employer form.
#1 Best Overall
- Magnetic Dry-Erase Surface – Vinyl-printed surface resists stains and ghosting for long-term visibility and smooth writing performance
- Easy Installation – Includes mounting brackets and hardware for secure and hassle-free wall mounting
- Durable Aluminum Frame – 1" aluminum border paired with a 2.5" deep aluminum tray for convenient accessory storage
- Usable Writing Surface – Writing area measures 2" less than the board's total dimensions
| Field | Why it helps |
|---|---|
| Date hazard identified | Establishes when the issue entered the tracking process. |
| Hazard | Describes the condition or exposure to be addressed. |
| Person or role assigned to abate | Identifies who is responsible for the correction. |
| Total days to abate | Records the time taken to correct the hazard. |
| Date of correction | Documents when the correction was completed. |
For audit work, extend that starting point with fields that support your actual workflow:
- Finding ID, audit source, location or process, and risk priority
- Management disposition and rationale
- Corrective-action description and interim control
- Accountable owner, target date, status, and dependencies
- Implementation evidence or a link to it
- Verifier, verification date, result, and any follow-up
- Closure date and rationale, plus a note explaining any changed target date
These extensions are recommended practice, not fields required by the cited OSHA sample. A small operation may be able to maintain the register in a paper safety inspection logbook or a simple spreadsheet. Choose a format that makes ownership, due dates, status, evidence, verification, and reporting easy to maintain.

How to monitor progress and report status
OSHA’s nonmandatory process-safety appendix recommends considering a tracking system to control corrective actions and providing periodic reports on their status. For findings that have passed through management of change, it recommends a final implementation report when appropriate. The relevant procedure should make clear who receives updates and what decisions are needed when work stalls.

It says program evaluations should be periodic and at least annual. That cadence applies to evaluating the safety program; it is not a universal deadline for closing an individual audit finding.

Deadlines and retention depend on the applicable rules
Do not assume every audit finding has one OSHA-wide due date or that the cited sources establish a universal retention period. Requirements may depend on the specific standard, an OSHA citation, the applicable federal or state-plan rules, and jurisdiction. Check the rule or citation that applies to the finding, and document the deadline and recordkeeping requirement you are following.
OSHA’s Appendix C to 29 CFR 1926.64 discusses audit planning, verification methods, and documenting areas requiring corrective action in its applicable context. It should not be read as creating a general deadline or proof standard for every workplace audit.
