Use /usage in Claude Code to check session cost, plan usage limits, and activity statistics. Use /status for account, model, version, and connection details. If you use Claude through the API, check the Usage and Cost reports in Anthropic Console instead: subscription allocation and API charges are separate billing paths.
Check Claude Code usage on a Pro or Max plan
- Open Claude Code and enter
/usage. The current command reference says it shows session cost, plan usage limits, and activity statistics./costand/statsare aliases. See Anthropic’s Claude Code command reference. - Enter
/statuswhen you need account, model, version, or connectivity information. Anthropic’s Help Center also recommends this view for monitoring remaining plan allocation. See Using Claude Code with your Pro or Max plan.
These commands help you inspect your own account rather than predict a guaranteed prompt quota. Anthropic says Pro and Max limits are shared between Claude and Claude Code: messages or other activity in Claude.ai can reduce what remains for Claude Code.
What Anthropic’s prompt estimates mean
Anthropic’s Help Center gives the following approximate Claude Code prompt counts for five-hour windows. They are average-use estimates, not guaranteed personal quotas or hard caps:
| Plan | Published price | Approximate Claude Code prompts per five-hour window |
|---|---|---|
| Pro | $20/month | 10–40 |
| Max 5x Pro | $100/month | 50–200 |
| Max 20x Pro | $200/month | 200–800 |
These are the figures in Anthropic’s Help Center article retrieved on October 7, 2026; check the linked page for current plan terms and estimates. Actual usage varies with prompt and conversation length, attachments, project complexity, codebase size, and settings such as auto-accept. Your own usage view is more relevant than an estimate for an average user.

Track Claude API usage and costs in Anthropic Console
If Claude Code is configured to use the Anthropic API, inspect the API account in Anthropic Console’s Usage and Cost reports. The reports are not a view of a Pro or Max subscription allowance.
- Usage report: Filter by model, time period, and API key; review token counts and rate-limited requests; export the report as CSV.
- Cost report: Review model-specific and tool-use costs, with daily or monthly views, and export as CSV.
- Access and granularity: Anthropic says Developer, Billing, and Admin roles can view these reports. The reports do not currently break down usage or costs by individual user.
API charges are metered at the applicable API rates, which depend on model and token category, including input, output, and prompt-cache usage. Rates and rate limits can change; check Anthropic’s API pricing documentation for the model and pricing tier you actually use rather than relying on an old quoted rate.

Subscription allocation and API billing are different
| How Claude Code is billed | Where to inspect it | What the view tells you |
|---|---|---|
| Claude Pro or Max subscription: Claude and Claude Code share plan usage limits. | /usage and /status in Claude Code. |
Session and plan usage context; not an API invoice. |
| Anthropic API: metered charges at API rates based on model and token use. | Anthropic Console Usage and Cost reports. | API activity and costs, filterable by model, time, and key; no individual-user breakdown in the cited reports. |
| Enterprise provider configuration such as Amazon Bedrock or Google Vertex AI. | The configured provider’s account and billing tools. | Usage and billing depend on that provider and account configuration, not the Anthropic Console subscription estimates. See Claude Code setup documentation. |
Do not assume API credits are included in a Pro or Max plan. Choosing API-credit usage is a move to the metered billing path and should be deliberate; charges then follow API rates rather than the subscription allocation.

What to do when you reach a limit
- On Pro or Max: Check
/usageor/statusfor your own account state, then wait for the applicable allocation window to reset or consider whether a different plan fits your observed workload. - Considering API usage: First confirm how Claude Code is configured and which account will be billed. API usage is charged at standard API rates, so review the current model pricing and monitor Console reports.
- Using an enterprise provider: Check the configured Bedrock or Vertex AI account for its usage and billing details; Anthropic’s subscription estimates do not establish those limits or charges.
