How to Find and Observe the Sombrero Galaxy (M104)

The Sombrero Galaxy, or Messier 104 (M104), is in Virgo and is too faint to see with the naked eye. Look for it on a spring night—NASA’s Hubble Messier catalog says it is easiest to spot during May—and use a telescope to find its small, elongated glow. A modest telescope can reveal the bright center; seeing even a hint of its famous dust lane takes clearer conditions and is not guaranteed.

What you can expect to see

M104 is also catalogued as NGC 4594. NASA lists its apparent magnitude as 8.0 and says it is beyond naked-eye visibility, but observable with small telescopes. Its nearly edge-on disk and prominent dust lane give the galaxy its familiar “Sombrero” appearance in detailed images; the eyepiece view is much subtler.

As a practical guide, Space.com’s 2026 observing guide says a 6-inch telescope may show the bright core. With an 8-inch or larger telescope, a very clear night may reveal a subtle suggestion of the dust lane. These are conditional observing guideposts, not controlled equipment tests or guarantees. Darkness, atmospheric clarity, aperture, and observer experience all affect what is visible. NASA describes the galaxy as readily viewable with a modest amateur telescope (NASA Hubble Messier Catalog; NASA’s Sombrero Galaxy page; Space.com’s 2026 guide).

When and where to look

Plan for spring, with May a useful starting point: NASA’s Hubble Messier catalog identifies it as the month when M104 is most easily spotted. The best time for your location still depends on latitude, date, local horizon, and how dark the sky is. Check a current planetarium app or star chart for when Virgo is well placed from your observing site.

Star-hop from Spica and Corvus

  1. Find Spica. Use a current sky chart or planetarium app to identify Spica, Virgo’s bright star, in the spring sky.
  2. Locate Corvus. Find the four brightest stars in Corvus, which form a distinctive diamond.
  3. Follow the nearby faint-star line. Space.com’s Northern Hemisphere spring guide describes a diagonal line of faint stars near Gienah and Algorab that points toward the patch of sky containing M104.
  4. Sweep the target area with your telescope. Use a low-power eyepiece to search for the faint, elongated glow, then increase magnification if the view remains steady and the object is centered.

The Spica-and-Corvus route is an orientation aid, not a set of precise angular offsets. A printed chart covering Virgo and Corvus can help, but use a current chart or planetarium app for exact pointing at your location and date.

Use current coordinates for precise pointing

Published coordinates differ between the consulted pages: Space.com lists right ascension 12h 41m 20s and declination −11° 45′ 59″, while NASA’s 2025 page lists right ascension 12h 39m 59.32s and declination −11° 37′ 16.78″. Because the figures do not match, do not treat either as a definitive pointing value; enter M104 in a current planetarium app or consult an up-to-date chart for your observing date.

Why the view differs from galaxy photographs

Even when a telescope shows M104 clearly, expect a faint, compact, elongated patch—not the bright, richly detailed image seen in observatory photographs. Finding the galaxy’s core is less demanding than detecting its dust lane, whose visibility depends on both the instrument and observing conditions. NASA places M104 about 28 million light-years away in its Hubble Messier catalog; a separate NASA page describes it as roughly 29 million light-years away, so about 28–29 million light-years is the appropriate level of precision. NASA also estimates that it has nearly 2,000 globular clusters.
