Check the notice or allowance for the model you are using, use Settings > Usage for supported connected apps, and check the separate Usage & billing view for Work and Codex when your account is eligible. Limits vary by plan and model and can change, so follow the reset time ChatGPT displays rather than assuming every allowance resets on the same schedule.
Why ChatGPT does not have one universal usage meter
Different parts of ChatGPT can have different limits and measurement periods. OpenAI says limits vary by plan and model and can change over time. A connected app may have its own cap on the share of your overall weekly ChatGPT usage, while workspace administrators can set monthly limits for members. These meters are not interchangeable, and a limit in one place does not necessarily mean every ChatGPT feature is unavailable. See OpenAI’s ChatGPT FAQ and connected-app guidance.
Check limits while using ChatGPT
For ordinary Chat, look for a usage notice or limit indicator in the product, then consult the current OpenAI help page for the plan and model involved. There is not a single counter or allowance that applies to all plans and models. If ChatGPT displays a reset time, use that time; do not infer a universal daily or weekly reset schedule. If an allowance for one model is exhausted, another available model may still work, depending on your plan and account.
When a limit notice appears, repeatedly signing in or retrying does not restore usage. Wait for the displayed reset, or choose another model that is available to you. OpenAI’s model guidance describes limits and reset notices; the available options can change.

Track usage from connected apps
For participating apps that use your ChatGPT plan, usage and app limits are managed in ChatGPT rather than by a separate pool within the app. OpenAI describes an app limit as a cap on the app’s share of overall weekly ChatGPT usage—not an extra allowance reserved for that app. The app can reach its cap while your account still has overall usage available.
- In ChatGPT, open Settings > Usage.
- Under App limits, find the app and select Manage limits.
- Review the app’s usage for the current period and its weekly limit; change the limit if needed.
- Save your changes.
This page reports app usage, not a detailed log of what you did inside the app. Changing the app cap controls how much of your overall weekly usage it may consume; it does not add usage to your account. Signing in again or retrying an action will not replenish an exhausted allowance. See OpenAI’s instructions for using a ChatGPT plan in other apps and sites.
Check Work and Codex usage separately
Codex users can check Settings or the usage dashboard to see which allowance is exhausted, any credit balance, and a reset time if one is shown. Consumption can vary with the model, task complexity, context, reasoning, speed, and tools used. OpenAI’s Codex plan guidance explains where to check account usage.
In eligible Enterprise and Edu accounts using ChatGPT Desktop, Settings > Usage & billing shows Work and Codex usage history and monthly limit information. It is not a meter for ordinary Chat use. Personal Analytics is a separate feature and may not be available in every eligible workspace. See OpenAI’s Desktop Usage & billing guidance.
What workspace admins can control
Enterprise and Edu admins or owners can set monthly user limits from Admin Console > Usage limits, with controls at workspace, group, and individual-user levels. They can pair limits with alerts and usage reports. An alert notifies its recipients; it does not itself stop usage. Reports and analytics may also have a freshness delay, so they should not be treated as a real-time personal usage counter. Consult the current Enterprise and Edu usage-limit guidance for controls that apply to your workspace and billing model.

Credits are optional pay-as-you-go usage for supported features and eligible accounts after included limits; purchasing them does not change your plan or raise its included limit. OpenAI currently describes supported credit usage as limited to Codex, ChatGPT Work, and ChatGPT for Excel when available—not ordinary Chat text messages. Availability varies by account and feature. Before enabling credits, check Settings > Usage and review automatic credit-purchase preferences separately. See OpenAI’s credit guidance.

A practical routine for staying within limits
- When a notice appears, note which model or feature it applies to and use the reset time shown, if available.
- For participating connected apps, review Settings > Usage > App limits and set a weekly cap that reflects how much of your overall usage you want an app to consume.
- If you use Codex or Work, check its own usage view rather than relying on ordinary Chat indicators.
- If you manage an Enterprise or Edu workspace, use the admin controls and alerts that match your billing model; do not treat alerts as usage blocks.
- Do not rely on repeated retries or sign-ins to restore an allowance. If available, switch to another model or wait for the displayed reset.
