How to Track Changes in Forest Biodiversity Over Time

A reliable forest biodiversity trend needs a clear question, repeatable field observations, and remote sensing used for landscape context—not as a substitute for species data.

To track forest biodiversity over time, choose indicators tied to a clear management question, measure them repeatedly with consistent field protocols, and use remote sensing to add landscape-scale context. A map of tree cover alone cannot show whether species diversity has increased or declined: it needs to be paired with suitable biological observations and interpreted at the scale the sampling design supports.

Start with the question your monitoring must answer

Define the forest area, the time period, the biodiversity components of interest, and the decisions the results will inform. For example: “Has the composition and regeneration of this managed forest changed since the intervention?” This is more useful than trying to measure every aspect of biodiversity without knowing how the results will be used.

FAO’s 2023 Guidelines on forest biodiversity monitoring methodologies for Central Asian countries describe a planning cycle that begins with goals and requirements, then selects indicators and methods, collects and analyzes data, interprets results, and reports them. The framework is useful beyond Central Asia, but its guidance should be adapted to local ecology and protocols.

Choose a manageable set of indicators

Pick indicators that address the question, can be measured reliably, and are affordable to repeat over the long term. Depending on the objective, they might cover:

  • Low-Power, Eco-Friendly Wildlife Viewing: Simply retrieve the SD card to see what your camera has captured—each visit could bring a new surprise. Non-Cellular and Non-WiFi operation ensures minimal power use, fewer battery changes, and zero disturbances.
  • Rugged & Weather-Resistant: Built to withstand harsh outdoor conditions with an IP66 waterproof rating. Features a 1/4"-20 mounting thread for secure placement on trees, posts, or fences. Ideal for use as a durable trail camera.
  • Fast 0.1s Trigger Speed with 3 PIR Sensors: Never miss fast-moving deer wildlife. Three PIR sensors enable a lightning-fast 0.1s trigger speed motion activation, perfect for hunting purposes.
  • Extended Power Options & Efficient Design: Powered by 8×AA batteries (not included). For continuous outdoor use, the E5S supports the GardePro SP350 Solar Panel (sold separately), ensuring reliable power even in remote areas.
  • Species: occurrence, composition, or another defined measure for selected plants, animals, or other groups.
  • Forest structure and regeneration: tree species, diameter, and the presence of younger trees.
  • Habitat and landscape: forest extent, fragmentation, or a specified habitat condition.
  • Pressures and responses: relevant pressures on the forest and management actions intended to address them.

These categories are not interchangeable. A change in habitat or forest cover may be important evidence, but it is not a complete measure of species diversity. CBD indicator guidance emphasizes that indicators should address relevant priorities and be feasible and affordable to produce over time.

Combine field observations with remote sensing

Field inventories and remote sensing answer related but different questions. Field observations can measure selected biological variables directly; satellite imagery can provide broad spatial context, such as changes in forest extent or land cover. A strong monitoring plan uses each method for what it can establish rather than treating one as a substitute for the other.

Approach What it can contribute Key limitation
Repeated field plots Direct observations of selected species or forest characteristics at sampled locations; repeated measurements can reveal local change. Results describe the sampled locations unless the sampling design supports inference to a larger area. Field capacity and survey methods affect what can be measured.
Remote sensing Broad-area observations of forest extent, land cover, or other observable habitat and structural properties; can help stratify field sampling or support extrapolation. It does not directly measure every taxonomic component of biodiversity. Estimated forest properties need appropriate field calibration and validation.
Field data plus remote sensing Combines detailed local measurements with landscape context and can support interpretation across a wider area when the design justifies it. Requires compatible dates, documented methods, and field observations suitable for validating the mapped properties.

FAO’s Forest inventory guidance describes field inventory, remote sensing, and calibration and validation. CBD’s Sourcebook on Remote Sensing and Biodiversity Indicators explains why remotely observed habitat trends should not be presented as a full account of biodiversity. The sourcebook is older, so it is not a guide to current sensor specifications or processing workflows.

Design repeatable field measurements

For a trend, the monitoring team must be able to compare one visit with another. Permanent plots can support that comparison when they are accurately located and the same definitions and procedures are used on each visit. FAO’s Guidelines for defining forest resources describes remeasuring permanent plots and individually marked trees to estimate growth, mortality, and recruitment.

  1. Set the sampling design: choose plot locations and coverage appropriate to forest variation and the area about which you need to draw conclusions. A small set of plots does not automatically represent an entire landscape.
  2. Make plots relocatable: record their locations and enough placement information for a future team to find and measure the same plots.
  3. Define each measurement: document what counts as an observation, how it is recorded, and any taxonomic decisions that affect identification.
  4. Record collection conditions: retain visit dates, survey effort, observers, methods, and equipment used. These details help distinguish ecological change from changes in how the survey was conducted.
  5. Preserve the record: keep the original observations and associated metadata together, including processing decisions and any changes to the protocol.

For tree diameter measurements, a forestry diameter tape is a field tool that can help collect a repeatable measurement. The tape is not itself a biodiversity indicator; its usefulness depends on a defined sampling protocol and on whether tree size answers the monitoring question.

Use a revisit interval that fits the indicator

There is no single survey interval that suits every forest or biodiversity measure. Set revisit timing according to how quickly the indicator is expected to change, when it can be detected reliably, local ecological conditions, and the decisions the monitoring will support. Different parameters may need different schedules.

FAO’s Guidelines for defining forest resources gives three to five years as a general example for permanent plots in many tropical forests. That is context-specific guidance, not a universal interval for forest biodiversity. Local conditions and growth determine whether that interval is suitable; other measures may require a different frequency.

Keep remote-sensing observations comparable

For a landscape map or time series, document the imagery or mapped products and the steps used to produce each result. Record the sensor, classification approach, spatial resolution, observation dates, and processing steps. When a sensor, classification, or processing method changes, document the change and assess whether results remain comparable; do not assume that two maps made by different methods measure change in the same way.

Where imagery is used to estimate forest properties, compare those estimates with field observations suitable for calibration and validation. Remote sensing can help organize field sampling or support extrapolation, but the sampling design and validation determine how far those results can reasonably be extended.

Interpret trends without overstating them

Compare like with like: use the same indicator definition, comparable methods, and an appropriate spatial scale. Report the coverage of the sample, uncertainty, gaps, and any changes in protocol or data processing. Separate the observed pattern from an explanation for it.

  • Consider natural variation: long time series can help distinguish natural fluctuation from human-caused degradation, as the CBD sourcebook notes.
  • Check for survey effects: a change in observers, effort, timing, identification decisions, or equipment may affect the observations.
  • Match the claim to the evidence: a local plot result does not establish a landscape-wide trend unless the design supports that inference.
  • Do not equate cover with biodiversity: a forest-area or canopy-change map alone cannot establish that all biodiversity components rose or fell.

FAO’s Forest management monitoring guidance emphasizes consistent, replicable monitoring, regular collection, and attention to frequency and scale. Transparent reporting makes it possible for readers and future monitoring teams to judge what changed, where the evidence applies, and what remains uncertain.
