Can a Gut Microbiome Test Tell You How Fast Your Brain Is Aging?

Human studies link gut microbiome patterns with brain-age estimates and cognitive scores, but no consumer stool test is validated to measure an individual’s brain-aging rate.

No. There is no validated consumer gut microbiome test that can tell you how fast your brain is aging. Researchers have found associations between gut microbes, brain-imaging estimates and cognitive scores, but those findings do not make a stool test a personal brain-age clock.

What a gut microbiome test can—and cannot—tell you

A stool microbiome profile measures microbial material in a sample. It does not directly measure brain structure, cognitive performance or the rate at which either is changing. A result described as a microbiome score should not be confused with an MRI-derived brain-age estimate, a cognitive assessment or a diagnosis.

Researchers are investigating links between the gut and brain, but the evidence does not establish that a retail stool kit can calculate an individual’s brain age, predict its rate of change or diagnose cognitive impairment.

What the human studies actually found

A 2025 study found associations, not a personal test

Son et al. studied 292 people recruited from memory clinics in South Korea. The team collected stool samples, performed MRI and clinical assessments, and used a pretrained model to estimate brain age. It then compared microbiome profiles with brain-age estimates and cognitive measures, including Mini-Mental State Examination and Clinical Dementia Rating Sum of Boxes scores. The study reported associations between greater microbiome dysbiosis, worse cognitive measures and brain age; the authors said brain age partially mediated the association after adjustment for chronological age, sex and education. This was an observational study in a selected clinical group. It did not show that microbiome changes cause brain aging, establish prospective prediction, or validate a consumer stool product. The authors’ conclusion that “brain age mediates the link between gut microbiome dysbiosis and cognitive performance” is their interpretation of those observed relationships—not evidence that a stool test can calculate brain age.

A 2026 study tested research feasibility

The bMicrobiome proof-of-concept study combined shotgun metagenomics with cognitive, behavioral and dietary assessments in adults aged 50–90 in the Washington, DC area. Seventeen participants completed sufficient assessments: 11 healthy controls and six people with mild cognitive impairment. Their microbiome profiles substantially overlapped. The authors also noted that uncommon or poorly characterized taxa contributed to some trends and that unassigned taxa were common. See the NIST publication record.

Earlier work and animal studies are not test validation

A 2023 National Institute on Aging summary discussed research involving 164 cognitively healthy volunteers aged 68–94. It described stool testing as a possible future way to study correlations with early Alzheimer’s risk, while noting that follow-up was needed to determine whether microbiome differences cause or follow brain changes. That is a research possibility, not a currently established risk test. Read the NIA summary.

In April 2026, NIH summarized an experiment in mice in which age-related gut microbiome changes affected gut-to-brain communication and memory-task performance. The report made any implication for people conditional: “If these results hold true in humans, they could inspire treatments to prevent, reduce, or even reverse age-related cognitive decline.” Animal results can help motivate human research, but they do not show that a human stool test works. Read the NIH summary.

Why the evidence does not support a brain-aging score

The findings are not yet consistent enough to establish a dependable microbial signature. A systematic review of healthy-aging research found six eligible studies among 1,752 records screened through March 2024. The studies differed in the microbial taxa and cognition measures they examined, and results varied by taxonomic level and measurement approach. Read the systematic review.

  • Association is not prediction: A relationship between microbiome patterns and brain or cognitive measures does not establish that a stool profile can forecast an individual’s future changes.
  • Association is not causation: The studies do not establish whether microbiome differences affect the brain, result from changes in health or behavior, or reflect other factors.
  • Group findings do not automatically classify individuals: The substantial profile overlap in the small 2026 feasibility study illustrates why a pattern seen in groups may not distinguish one person’s cognitive status.
  • Different studies measure different things: Variation in microbial analysis and cognitive measures makes a single settled “brain-aging microbiome” signature unsupported by the evidence described here.

How the available assessment approaches differ

Approach What it measures Sample or procedure What the cited evidence supports
Gut microbiome profile Microbial material in stool Stool sample Research into associations; not a validated individual brain-age measure.
MRI-derived brain-age estimate Brain imaging features interpreted by a model MRI scan and a model Used as a research measure in the 2025 study; not interchangeable with a stool result.
Cognitive assessment Performance on specified cognitive tasks Assessment administered using a cognitive tool A separate clinical or research assessment; not a microbiome profile.
p-tau217 blood biomarker pathway An Alzheimer’s-related blood biomarker Blood test A distinct biomarker research pathway, not a microbiome test or general brain-aging clock.

These approaches answer different questions and should not be treated as substitutes. NIA discusses how cognitive tools are considered alongside imaging and other diagnostic information; it also reports that the U.S. Preventive Services Task Force found insufficient evidence to recommend cognitive screening. Read the NIA cognitive-assessment material. NIH’s p-tau217 report concerns Alzheimer’s-related biomarker research, not gut microbiome testing. Read the NIH p-tau217 report.

What to do if you are concerned about memory or thinking

Do not use a consumer microbiome result to decide whether your brain is aging unusually quickly. If you have concerns about memory or thinking, discuss them with a healthcare professional, who can assess which evaluation is appropriate. A stool profile is not a substitute for cognitive assessment, imaging or other diagnostic procedures.

5Strands Comprehensive Gut Health Test Including 1180 Food & Drink Items
  • DISCOVER SPECIFIC DIETARY TRIGGERS. The screening pinpoints which foods items your gut may have trouble breaking down properly. This internal gut stress can turn into physical symptoms like bloating, diarrhea, acne, headaches, and joint pain. Identifying these triggers allows you to make targeted dietary adjustments that can reduce discomfort and support better nutrient absorption.
  • CLEAR INTOLERANCE LEVELS. The tested food items are sorted into four categories: no significant response, mild, moderate, or high intolerance. This format helps you easily see which foods may be tolerated in small amounts and which should be avoided for a reset period, allowing your body to heal and rebalance.
  • COVERS 30 DISTINCT FOOD AND ADDITIVE CATEGORIES. Our hair analysis test evaluates items across proteins, dairy, grains, fruits, vegetables, legumes, nuts, seafood, mushrooms, herbs, and spices. It also screens for common additives such as preservatives, emulsifiers, stabilizers, thickeners, food dyes, sweeteners, probiotics, and prebiotics, giving you a detailed look at potential triggers from both whole foods and processed ingredients.
  • NON-INVASIVE COLLECTION PROCESS. A small hair sample is all that is required, collected in the comfort of your own home. This method avoids the hassle of needles while giving you reliable data about your body’s interaction with a wide variety of foods.
  • FAST, DETAILED DIGITAL REPORT. Within 4 days of your sample reaching the lab, you’ll receive a full analysis sent to the registered email. The report provides a practical foundation to adjust your diet and create a plan for long-term digestive health.

These studies also do not establish that a probiotic, supplement, diet kit or consumer microbiome test can determine or reverse an individual’s rate of brain aging. The 2026 study discusses diet and readiness for behavioral change as contextual factors, but it does not validate a retail product or an intervention that changes brain age.
