To compare crypto prices across exchanges, read the full trading pair, keep its quote currency visible, and record the venue and time. AVAX/USD quotes AVAX in USD; AVAX/USDT quotes it in USDT. Their displayed numbers may look similar, but they are not automatically the same price or equally current or tradable.
What a crypto trading pair tells you
A market pair names two assets: the base asset first and the quote asset second. In AVAX/USD, AVAX is the asset being priced and USD is the unit of the quote. In AVAX/USDT, the quote is USDT, a separate asset—not USD. A dollar sign or dollar-like display does not prove that the underlying quote currency is the same.

CoinGecko’s AVAX markets page lists both USD and USDT pairs across venues. Examples include USD listings on Coinbase Exchange and Kraken and USDT listings on Binance, Gate, OKX, and KuCoin. Listings, prices, and rankings change, so use the pair labels—not a particular live price—as the durable distinction.

Ticker symbols alone can also be ambiguous. Verify the asset identity and the venue’s actual listing rather than assuming that a symbol uniquely identifies an asset.

A reliable workflow for comparing exchange prices
- Confirm the asset and full pair. Record the asset identity and a complete pair such as
AVAX/USDorAVAX/USDT, not just “AVAX price.” - Name the venue and market type. Specify the exchange and whether the listing is spot, a derivative, or on a decentralized exchange (DEX). These are different markets; do not combine them without labeling the difference.
- Keep the native quote currency. Store USD, USDT, USDC, EUR, or another quote asset as its own field. Do not silently rename a stablecoin quote as USD.
- Normalize only when you need a common comparison. If listings use different quote assets, convert each observation to one stated reference currency using a named conversion source and the time of that conversion. Keep the converted figure beside—not in place of—the native pair price.
- Record the observation time and freshness. Compare values observed at roughly the same time. A last-trade price can be stale and may not match the price available to trade now.
- Check trading conditions when execution matters. Review bid-ask spread, market depth, and volume where available. Similar last-price figures alone do not show whether either market offers a comparable executable price.
- Keep aggregate reference prices distinct. A provider-wide coin price may aggregate multiple markets and apply conversions. Treat it as a reference measure, not as the exact price available on every venue. CoinGecko publishes a price aggregation methodology; consult its current version if the calculation matters.
What to put in a comparison table
For a useful record, preserve the original quote and the context needed to interpret it. CoinGecko’s exchange-data materials describe fields such as exchange and pair, converted values, spread, volume, and timestamps.

CoinGecko’s exchange-data overview describes exchange metadata and ticker data, including native and converted values, spread, and update information. Its endpoint overview covers ticker data for centralized and decentralized markets. Available fields depend on the data source and listing; do not assume every venue provides every comparison field.

Choosing a tool for ongoing monitoring
A multi-exchange market-data view or portfolio tracker can be useful for monitoring several listings. Before relying on one, check that it shows the original quote asset, identifies the venue and market type, displays observation times, and explains how any converted value is calculated. A tool that shows only a dollar-like number can obscure the distinction the comparison needs to preserve.
