If your VPN connects and then drops, note the exact times and what else changed on the device or network before changing settings. A short event timeline can show whether the underlying Wi-Fi connection failed, the VPN tunnel disconnected on its own, or a gateway-side event needs an administrator’s attention.
What to record when the VPN drops
Use one consistent clock and include the time zone if you will share the details with an administrator or service provider. Record the full error text or code, not just a paraphrase. For each connection attempt, capture the following:

- Connection stages: when the attempt began, when the VPN reported connected, when it dropped, and when it reconnected.
- Network state: Wi-Fi or Ethernet status, network name, access point if known, signal conditions, and whether the device roamed.
- Recent events: updates, sleep or resume, driver or firmware changes, VPN or security software changes, wireless profile or authentication-policy changes, and access-point configuration changes.
- Evidence: VPN client event details, relevant operating-system events, and—on managed networks—wireless controller or gateway records.
| When | Record | Evidence to keep |
|---|---|---|
| Before connecting | Wi-Fi or Ethernet state, network name, access point or signal details if known, and recent updates or network changes. | VPN client and operating-system versions. |
| Connection attempt | Whether the client is connecting, authenticating, or reporting an error; note whether the network itself remains stable. | Exact error text or code and the corresponding event entry. |
| Connected | When the tunnel became usable and whether the network or access point changed afterward. | Connected status or event. |
| Drop | Exact disconnect time and message; Wi-Fi state, signal, roaming, and any recent change. | Client log entry and timestamp. |
| Reconnect | Retry and recovery times, whether the device is on the same network, and any action taken. | Outcome and any new error. |
Work out which connection layer failed
Wi-Fi drops or roams at the same time
Investigate the wireless connection before blaming the VPN tunnel. Record the network name, access point, signal conditions, and roaming event if available. Microsoft’s Windows wireless troubleshooting guide recommends collecting baseline evidence and correlating client traces with access-point or controller logs. Include recent changes to wireless drivers, firmware, Windows, security or VPN software, wireless profiles, authentication policy, and access-point configuration.
Wi-Fi stays connected but the VPN disconnects
Focus on the VPN client’s own event details. For the Windows Always On VPN scenario, Microsoft’s troubleshooting guidance points to RasClient events in the application logs and their error codes. Keep the complete timestamp and message. The exact log location and available details depend on the Windows version and VPN deployment; this guidance is not a universal path for macOS, mobile devices, or every consumer VPN app.

A managed or site-to-site VPN disconnects
Give the administrator the client-side timestamp so it can be compared with gateway or server diagnostics. For Azure VPN Gateway, Microsoft identifies TunnelDiagnosticLog as useful when investigating past unexpected disconnects and recommends checking Azure Service Health after identifying the time. Its diagnostic-log guidance applies to Azure VPN Gateway; administrators may need to check both gateway and on-premises settings for a site-to-site connection. Microsoft’s Azure site-to-site troubleshooting guidance includes network-range and IPsec-policy checks for intermittent disconnects.
Use an error code as a clue, not a diagnosis
Keep the code attached to the exact event and connection stage. In Microsoft’s Windows Always On VPN troubleshooting scenario, error 809 means the remote server did not respond. Possible causes include intervening network devices, a firewall, or NAT. For the IKE/IPsec situation described in that guidance, UDP ports 500 and 4500 are among the items to check with a network administrator or service provider. This branch is specific to that documented scenario; it does not mean every VPN drop is caused by blocked ports.

Compare plausible causes before changing settings
Use the timeline to decide what evidence to collect next. Change one relevant setting at a time, and record what changed and whether the next drop behaves differently.
