Full-Array LED TVs Explained: What the Backlight Label Means

A full-array LED TV is an LCD television with LEDs across the back of the screen. Learn how local dimming zones work, why blooming can occur, and what the label does—and does not—tell you.

A full-array LED TV is an LCD television with LEDs positioned behind the screen to illuminate it. In a full-array local-dimming TV, those LEDs are grouped into zones that can be dimmed or brightened separately. The LCD pixels still form the image; the LEDs provide its backlight.

What “full-array” means

“Full-array” describes the backlight’s layout: LEDs sit across the rear of the screen rather than only along its edges. LG’s comparison of edge-lit, full-array, and direct-lit backlights explains these different arrangements.

The television’s LCD layer controls how much backlight passes through each pixel, while color filters produce red, green, and blue. OLED works differently: each pixel makes its own light and does not need a separate backlight, as explained in Sharp’s overview of TV backlighting.

Full-array versus direct-lit and edge-lit

Backlight type Where the LEDs are What that means
Edge-lit Along one or more edges of the screen A light guide spreads illumination across the display.
Direct-lit Behind the screen The LEDs illuminate the panel from the rear; the term alone does not establish whether they are controlled in local-dimming zones.
Full-array Across the rear of the screen The layout can support local dimming, but the label alone does not specify how many zones a TV has or how well they work.

These labels describe arrangements, not a guaranteed ranking of picture quality. Manufacturer descriptions can use the terms differently, so check the specifications for the exact TV model.

How local dimming works—and what blooming is

Full-array local dimming divides the rear LED backlight into controllable zones. The TV can reduce illumination in darker areas while keeping other zones bright. As Sharp puts it, “Full-array local dimming divides a rear LED array into controllable zones.”

A zone covers many LCD pixels rather than controlling each pixel individually. When a bright object appears against a dark background—such as white subtitles or stars—the light from its zone may spill into nearby dark areas. This visible halo is called blooming. Its prominence depends on the TV’s implementation and settings.

Is Mini LED the same as full-array?

No. Full-array describes where the backlight LEDs are placed; Mini LED describes smaller LEDs used to make a denser backlight in Sony’s terminology. Sony says both Full Array LED and Mini LED sets can control areas of the backlight, with Mini LEDs smaller and denser. See Sony’s explanation of Mini LED and Full Array LED.

The terms are not interchangeable. Check the specific manufacturer’s description and model specifications rather than assuming that “full-array” means Mini LED, or vice versa.

What to check on a specific TV

  • Confirm that the specifications say full-array backlight, rather than relying on a broad “LED TV” label.
  • Check whether local dimming is included and whether the backlight is divided into zones.
  • Look for a published zone count or model-specific evidence about dimming behavior and screen uniformity. The name “full-array” by itself does not reveal zone count, algorithm quality, or uniformity.
  • Consider whether blooming around bright objects on dark backgrounds would bother you; its visibility varies by implementation and settings.
  • Keep LED size and density separate from layout: a full-array backlight is not automatically a Mini LED backlight.

These terms explain the backlight design, not measured performance. Manufacturer explainers from Sony India’s backlighting overview, LG, Sony, and Sharp describe the technology; they are not independent comparative tests.
