How to Track a Corgi: GPS, Microchips, and What Each Can Do

GPS trackers, microchips, and Bluetooth tags serve different roles in finding or identifying a dog. Learn what each can do and what to check before choosing a wearable.

A wearable GPS tracker can help you locate a corgi while it is attached, charged, and within supported cellular coverage. A microchip serves a different purpose: it helps a vet or shelter identify a dog that has been found and scanned. Neither device prevents a dog from getting away or guarantees its recovery.

The title suggests personal use, but no specific devices or firsthand observations are established here. The useful distinction is what each technology can—and cannot—do.

How do I track my dog?

For location while a dog is wearing a device, a dedicated GPS tracker or smart collar is the relevant tool. Tractive says its tracker uses satellites and cellular networks to send a pet’s position to its app; its help page also describes map location, safe-zone alerts, location history, and activity features. These functions depend on the tracker being attached and charged, as well as supported cellular coverage where the dog goes. A subscription may be required. See Tractive’s explanation of trackers and microchips and its US product page.

A GPS tracker can make it easier to check a dog’s reported location or receive an alert when it crosses a configured boundary. A virtual fence is only an alert boundary, not a physical barrier. Andrew Bleiman, Tractive’s executive vice president for North America, told AP News that a tracker is “not going to keep your pet in the backyard” and “It will only ‘alert you when they leave the virtual fence area that you set up.’” The comments appeared in AP’s June 19, 2025 explainer, “One Tech Tip: No more lost cats and dogs. Use tech to track your pet.”

Is a GPS tracker better than a Bluetooth tag for a dog?

They solve different problems. A dedicated GPS tracker can report location through cellular networks, subject to coverage and service requirements. A Bluetooth item tracker depends on nearby compatible devices to relay its signal; it is not equivalent to a dedicated GPS tracker once the dog is outside Bluetooth range.

AP News reported a broad Bluetooth range of 100 to 500 feet (30 to 150 meters), varying by model. That is not a promise of reliable range in every setting. A Bluetooth tag may be an additional aid when a dog is likely nearby, but relying on it as the only way to find a dog can leave a substantial gap.

What does a microchip do?

A microchip is passive identification under a pet’s skin, not a location beacon. If someone finds the dog and takes it to a vet or shelter, staff can scan the chip to retrieve its identifier and use registration records to contact the owner. It does not show live location and does not replace a wearable tracker. Keep the registration and contact information current. Tractive describes the distinction in its microchip and tracker guide.

What should I check before choosing a wearable?

Product fit and service details matter more than a feature list in isolation. Check these points for the exact model and the country where it will be used:

Tractive Smart Dog GPS Tracker | Live Pet Tracker with Virtual Fence | Vital Signs Monitoring of Heart & Respiratory Rate | Bark Monitoring | Dog Collar Attachment (Black)
  • REAL-TIME GPS TRACKING WITH UNLIMITED RANGE: Track your dog with live location updates every 2–3 seconds. Unlike others that update once a minute, Tractive lets you follow every step with no distance limits, anywhere in the world.
  • VITAL SIGNS MONITORING: The Tractive smart tracker monitors changes in your dog’s heart and respiratory rates, helping detect potential issues before they become visible.
  • HEALTH & BARKING ALERTS: The tracker learns your dog’s normal behavior and detects changes. If it notices unusual sleep, activity, or barking patterns, you’ll receive an alert so you can take action early.
  • ESCAPE ALERTS & LOCATION HISTORY: Create custom virtual fences around your yard, dog park, or neighborhood. Get instant alerts if your dog leaves and review location history to retrace their steps.
  • LONG-LASTING BATTERY, LIGHTWEIGHT & WATERPROOF: Tough yet light enough for any dog over 8 pounds. Fully waterproof, with up to 14 days’ battery life. Now featuring a brighter LED and louder sound for easier tracking.
  • Fit and attachment: Check the device’s weight and dimensions against the individual dog’s size, and make sure it can be attached securely to the collar or harness the dog wears.
  • Coverage: Confirm cellular service is supported in the places the dog is likely to go. A GPS position alone does not ensure the tracker can transmit it to the app.
  • Alerts and updates: Check how location updates and safe-zone alerts work on that model; an alert boundary is not containment.
  • Charging: Consider the charging routine and the vendor’s battery information for the specific model and settings. A discharged tracker cannot provide ongoing location reporting.
  • Service terms: Check whether a subscription is required, what it covers, and where the service is available.
  • Extra data: Decide whether activity or health-related features are useful to you rather than treating them as a substitute for location or identification.

For examples of the types of wearable products available, Fi describes an integrated GPS smart collar with activity and health functions on its official site and product page. Purina lists the Petivity Smart GPS + Activity Tracker for Dogs as a waterproof, lightweight collar attachment that reports location and daily activity on its US product listing. These listings describe products; they do not establish that any particular model fits a specific corgi or is available with the same terms in every country. Check the exact model, attachment, coverage, and current subscription terms before choosing.

What technology makes sense for different situations?

Technology What it can do Main limitation
Wearable GPS tracker or smart collar Report a worn device’s location through an app; some products also offer safe-zone alerts, history, activity, or health features. Must stay attached and charged; service depends on supported cellular coverage, and a subscription may be required.
Microchip Help identify a found dog when a vet or shelter scans it and checks the registration. Does not provide live location; the dog must be found and scanned.
Bluetooth item tracker May help locate an item or pet when nearby compatible devices can relay its signal. Useful range and location reporting depend on nearby devices; it is not dedicated GPS tracking outside Bluetooth range.

AP News described broad market ranges in its June 19, 2025 article: many devices cost less than $100, while cellular service can cost $100 or more a year. These are general market figures, not current quotes for any named product; check present pricing and recurring fees with the manufacturer.
