You can track a cell phone location online in two legitimate ways: find your own lost phone through the Apple or Google account linked to it, or view another person’s location after they knowingly share it with you. The official services covered here do not offer a way to locate an arbitrary person’s live phone just by entering a phone number.
How can I track a cell phone location online?
Choose the route that matches what you are trying to locate. For a lost phone, sign in to the official service for the account already associated with that device. To see another person’s location, they must deliberately share it with you. These are different functions: device recovery can include remotely securing a phone, while location sharing shows a person’s location under settings they control.

How do I find my lost iPhone?
- Open Apple’s Find My service and sign in with the Apple Account associated with the missing iPhone.
- Use Find My to check the device’s location and follow Apple’s current instructions for securing or managing it.
- If you recover the phone, secure your Apple Account and review its settings.
Find My iPhone needs to have been enabled for the recovery capability described by Apple. Apple’s current Personal Safety guide says an enabled iPhone may be found through the Find My network for up to 24 hours after it is powered off or disconnected from the internet. That is a stated capability, not a guarantee for every phone or circumstance. Apple also says that turning off Find My or the Find My network prevents locating, locking, or erasing a lost phone while it is powered down. How do I find my lost Android phone?
- Open Google’s Find Hub service or app.
- Sign in with the Google Account associated with the missing phone.
- Use the available device controls to locate or remotely secure the phone, following Google’s Find Hub Help Centre setup and recovery steps.
Google currently describes the Find Hub app as usable on Android 6 and later; its Find Hub network requires Android 9 and later. Availability and results depend on the phone and its configuration, so do not assume every offline device will return a precise location. Google says location data used by the network is encrypted using the device’s PIN, pattern, or password.

Can I track a phone by number?
The official Apple and Google services described here do not support locating an arbitrary person’s live phone simply by entering its phone number. Their documented routes rely on the account linked to your own lost device or on a person choosing to share a location. Avoid phone-number lookup sites and covert-monitoring apps that claim otherwise; do not install spyware or use a Bluetooth item tag to track a person.
Can I share my location with family?
Yes, using the platform’s location-sharing settings, with the other people’s knowledge. On Apple devices, Find My lets a person choose who can see their location. Family Sharing does not automatically reveal every family member’s location: each person still has to share. A person can stop sharing, after which their location disappears from the other person’s Find My, Maps, Contacts, and Messages apps; Apple cautions that the change may be noticed. Google also offers location sharing, which depends on location permissions and settings and may require background location access. How can I tell if someone is tracking my phone?
Location access can come from different places: an app’s location permission, access to your device or online account, or a location share you previously enabled. None of those is the same as a universal phone-number tracking service. Google explains that iOS and Android let people manage app location permissions; some features, such as Find My Device or Location Sharing, may need background access. Review location permissions, account access, and active sharing settings using the current instructions for your device.

The Federal Trade Commission defines stalkerware as software installed on a phone or other device without the user’s knowledge. It may track location and access communications or other data. If you suspect it, prioritize safety over immediately removing an app or resetting the phone: a change may alert the person monitoring you.

- If you can, use a different device to contact a domestic-violence advocate or law enforcement.
- Ask a qualified advocate to help you make a technology-safety plan for your situation.
- Preserve evidence before resetting or replacing the phone. If you decide to reset it, the FTC advises against restoring all apps from a backup, which could reinstall stalkerware.

If you receive an unknown Bluetooth tracker alert
Bluetooth item tags locate belongings; they are not a legitimate way to track someone’s cell phone or person. Apple warns against using AirTags or compatible accessories to track people or property that does not belong to you. Apple and Google have an industry specification intended to alert people across iOS and Android when compatible unknown trackers move with them. Apple’s instructions explain how to review an alert, locate a tag, and disable it so its owner no longer receives current location updates. Apple also says Android 6 and later can automatically notify users about AirTags or other item trackers moving with them and supports a manual scan. See Apple’s unknown tracker safety guidance.
