How to Track a Bitcoin or BNB Wallet’s Transaction History

Use the correct blockchain explorer to inspect a Bitcoin or BNB Smart Chain address or transfer ID, verify the recipient and status, and troubleshoot missing wallet activity without sharing recovery credentials.

To check a Bitcoin transfer, search its public address or transaction ID in a Bitcoin explorer such as Mempool.space. For a transfer on BNB Smart Chain (BSC), search the public address or transaction hash in BscScan. First confirm which network carried the transfer; then check its status, recipient, and asset details. Never enter a seed phrase or private key into an explorer.

Choose the right lookup: address or transaction ID

Use a transaction ID (also called a transaction hash on BSC) to inspect one transfer. Search a public address to see activity associated with that address. BNB Chain’s token troubleshooting FAQ recommends searching an address or transaction hash in BscScan. Mempool.space documents Bitcoin address-history lookups, including separate confirmed and unconfirmed activity.

A web explorer and a wallet app do not necessarily show the same history. An explorer can show public, indexed activity associated with an address. A wallet’s history may be limited to transactions that wallet recognizes or tracks. For example, Bitcoin Core’s listtransactions RPC returns recent wallet-associated transactions, not a general history for any address.

Track a Bitcoin transaction

  1. Copy the Bitcoin address or transaction ID from the wallet or transfer record. Use only this public information; do not copy recovery words or a private key.
  2. Open Mempool.space and paste the address to inspect its associated transactions, or paste the transaction ID to inspect one transfer.
  3. Check whether the transaction is unconfirmed in the mempool or appears in confirmed history. Mempool.space documents separate endpoints for unconfirmed activity and paginated confirmed address history in its REST API documentation; a long address history may require moving through additional pages.
  4. Compare the transaction’s outputs, recipient, amount, fee, and status with the transfer record. If you use Bitcoin Core and the transaction belongs to your wallet, its gettransaction RPC accepts a transaction ID and returns details about that wallet-known transaction.

A transaction shown as unconfirmed has not yet appeared in confirmed history. Do not treat a mempool entry as settled.

Track a BNB Smart Chain transaction

  1. Identify the network used by the sender. A token’s name or an address that looks familiar does not prove which network carried the transfer.
  2. For BSC mainnet, open BscScan. BNB Chain’s wallet configuration documentation, dated May 12, 2025, lists BSC mainnet as Chain ID 56 and BSC testnet as Chain ID 97, with a separate explorer for testnet. Other networks, including opBNB, also have their own explorers.
  3. Search the transaction hash to inspect a specific transfer, or search the public address to view associated activity. Check that the transaction succeeded and that the recipient address and token match the intended transfer.
  4. If the explorer shows the transfer but the token is absent from the wallet, check that the wallet is set to the network where it was sent and whether that wallet supports or needs the token added. An explorer record confirms visible on-chain activity; it does not guarantee that a particular wallet will display the asset.

BNB Chain’s developer documentation discusses probabilistic and economic finality through its BSC API list. There is no single confirmation threshold to apply to every exchange or recipient: their crediting rules may differ, so follow the receiving service’s stated policy.

When the transaction is missing or the funds are not visible

  • No search result: Check for a copying error and confirm that you selected the network actually used. BSC, opBNB, and testnet do not share a single explorer endpoint.
  • The explorer shows a transfer, but the wallet does not: Check success, recipient, token, and network. Then check whether the wallet is configured for that network and supports or displays the token.
  • The wallet history looks incomplete: Search the public address in the relevant explorer. A wallet may show only activity it recognizes; Bitcoin Core’s transaction-list RPC is specifically wallet-scoped.
  • Bitcoin shows pending or unconfirmed: The transaction is in the mempool rather than confirmed history. Do not describe it as settled while it remains unconfirmed.

Protect your privacy and recovery credentials

Addresses and confirmed transactions on public blockchains are visible, but a public address alone does not establish who owns it. A third-party explorer may learn which address you searched. Bitcoin Core’s privacy documentation explains that wallet queries to a server can reveal addresses to that server.
