To rip a music CD, put it in a computer’s CD drive, choose ripping software and an output format, check the album details, then start the rip. Choose MP3 for smaller, widely compatible lossy files; choose FLAC for lossless compression if your music player supports it. If accuracy matters, use software with secure ripping and error checks rather than relying on a one-pass copy.
What you need to rip a CD
- An audio CD and a drive that can read it. Use a built-in optical drive or a compatible external USB CD/DVD drive. If buying an external drive, check that it works with your computer’s port and operating system. Microsoft lists a CD/DVD drive among the equipment for its disc workflows (Microsoft Support).
- Ripping software. Windows Media Player provides a straightforward Windows workflow and can save music as MP3, WMA, or WAV. For FLAC or secure ripping features, use software that explicitly supports them; dBpoweramp documents both secure ripping and FLAC (dBpoweramp Secure Setup Guide).
- A destination folder with enough space. Windows Media Player defaults to the Music folder, and lets you change the location in its rip settings. The amount of space required depends on the format and encoding settings.
Choose MP3 or FLAC
| Format | Choose it when | Trade-off |
|---|---|---|
| MP3 | You specifically need MP3, want compressed files, or prioritize broad compatibility. | MP3 is lossy: it discards audio information. File size and sound quality depend on the encoding settings you choose. |
| FLAC | You want lossless compression and your playback apps and devices support FLAC. | Check compatibility before ripping a whole collection; some players or apps may not support the format. |
FLAC is lossless: dBpoweramp describes lossless decoding as restoring audio identical to the source (dBpoweramp Secure Setup Guide). That does not mean every listening setup needs FLAC; the practical choice depends on compatibility and whether you want to preserve the CD audio without lossy encoding. If you choose MP3, select the quality setting offered by your software. There is no single bitrate recommendation established here as best for every listener.

Prepare the disc and check its details
- Insert the audio CD into the built-in or external drive.
- Let the ripping app look up the album information if you want it to, then review the result. Confirm the artist, album title, track titles, track order, and numbering. Database matches can be wrong when different releases have similar track timings.
- Correct any errors before ripping. Microsoft documents searching for album information and entering it manually; dBpoweramp also provides metadata review and editing (Microsoft Support; dBpoweramp CD Ripper Help).
- If the disc is visibly dirty, clean it gently before retrying a problem track.
Rip the CD with Windows Media Player
Microsoft’s documented Windows Media Player workflow supports MP3, WMA, and WAV, but its support page does not list FLAC. Menu wording or availability can vary by Windows version and player edition; use the options shown in your installed app.
Do these 3 things before closing this tab:
1Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problems2Fix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitches3Clear out junk files and repair common Windows errors- Open Windows Media Player and insert the audio CD.
- Review the listed tracks and deselect any you do not want to copy.
- Open Rip settings and choose Format to select MP3. Choose the available audio-quality setting and, if needed, change the destination folder.
- Select Rip CD and wait for the tracks to finish copying.
Microsoft documents the rip command, format and quality settings, track selection, and configurable save location in its Windows Media Player instructions.

The pop-up button and built-in cable design offer convenience and portability. For desktop PCs, connecting to a rear USB port is recommended for optimal power and performance.
Use secure ripping when accuracy matters
A basic or burst rip extracts in one pass. dBpoweramp says its burst mode performs no error correction; secure ripping instead rereads data to detect and potentially recover read errors. It can also compare a rip with AccurateRip, a database of other rips (dBpoweramp Secure Setup Guide).
- Choose software with a documented secure mode and set it to a lossless output such as FLAC if you want an archival copy.
- Enable the software’s secure-ripping and database-check options where available. Follow its current instructions for configuring your specific drive; drive behavior and support for features such as C2 error pointers can differ.
- Review per-track results and any extraction log after the rip. A database match is evidence that your result agrees with other rips, not a guarantee that every possible error has been ruled out.
- If the software reports disagreement, do not assume the CD is damaged: a different pressing can produce a mismatch. If it reports read errors, inspect the disc and try another drive or ripping application before treating the track as unrecoverable.
dBpoweramp describes secure ripping as an error-detection and potential-recovery process, not a guarantee of a perfect result (Secure Setup Guide; CD Ripper Help).

Supported formats include CD-ROM/R/RW, DVD-ROM/R±RW/R±DL, and VCD. IMPORTANT: Not compatible with ChromeOS, smartphones, tablets, TVs, projectors, vehicles, or Blu-ray/4K discs. Please verify your device type before purchasing
Check the finished files
- Open the destination folder and confirm that the expected tracks are present and have the format you selected.
- Play a few tracks, including one from near the end of the disc, and check that titles and track numbers are correct.
- If you used secure ripping, review track statuses and save or retain the extraction log if the software provides one—especially for a disc that produced read errors.
If a track did not rip successfully, retry it after checking the disc, then try another drive or application. A failed attempt alone does not establish that the track cannot be recovered.
