To text with Google Voice, sign in to an account with a Google Voice number, open Messages in the Voice app or at voice.google.com, compose a message, enter a recipient, and send. Replies and incoming texts appear in Messages. Voice uses Wi-Fi or mobile data for messaging, so it is not the same as texting through your carrier’s SMS allowance.
Send a text from a computer
- Go to voice.google.com and sign in to the Google account associated with your Voice number.
- Open Messages, then click Send a message.
- Enter a contact name or phone number, write your message, and click Send. To reply later, open the conversation, type your response, and send it.
Send a text from the Google Voice app
- Open the Google Voice app on your Android phone or iPhone/iPad.
- Go to Messages and tap Compose.
- Select a contact or enter a number, write the message, and tap Send. To respond, open the conversation and send your reply.
You need a Google Voice number to send texts; Google does not support texting from Voice without one. Google’s instructions are available for Android, iPhone and iPad, and the computer website.

Read incoming messages
Open Messages in the Voice app or on the website to see conversations and incoming texts. If a message you expect is missing, check the Spam folder. Google says international receiving is possible, though some banks and subscription services do not deliver messages to Voice numbers.

Supported destinations and data use
Google says personal texts to U.S., Canadian, and Puerto Rican numbers have no charge, except numbers in the U.S. territories of American Samoa, Guam, the Northern Mariana Islands, and the U.S. Virgin Islands. Its cost guidance specifically discusses U.S. and Canadian numbers, so do not assume every destination has the same terms. Paid Google Voice subscriptions support text messaging only in the U.S.

Messages travel over Wi-Fi or mobile data, not your carrier’s SMS allowance. Carrier data limits and rates may apply; when you are outside the U.S. and send without Wi-Fi, mobile roaming charges may apply. “No charge” for a supported destination does not mean the message uses no data.
Short codes and verification messages
Google Voice cannot send texts to five- or six-digit short codes. Some websites, banks, and subscription services also do not send verification texts to Voice numbers. If a verification message will not arrive, use a mobile carrier number when the service allows it. For a text from someone using iMessage to an iOS Voice user, Google says the sender’s number may need to be deregistered from iMessage.

Groups, character limits, and media
- A group conversation can include up to seven other participants, or eight people total including you.
- A message longer than 160 characters sent to a non-Voice number is split into multiple messages.
- Images larger than 2 MB are reduced in size; GIFs larger than 2 MB will not send.
Keep messages personal and interactive
Google’s guidance is: “Use Google Voice for interactive messaging only.” The consumer service is intended for personal conversations, not bulk announcements or business messaging. Repeated identical texts, especially when recipients do not reply, links, high message volume, or spam reports can lead to messages being flagged or blocked.

Google does not state a fixed numeric sending quota in its cited help guidance. Sending many messages in a short time or having recipients report messages as spam can temporarily restrict sending. If Google blocks the account from calling or texting, its advice is to wait 24 hours. Repeated behavior or serious cases may result in suspension. For bulk announcements to a class, Google suggests alternatives such as email, a school website, social media, or another communication app.

If Google Voice will not send your text
- Check for a Voice number: a Google Voice number is required for texting.
- Check the recipient: short codes are not supported, and some services reject Voice numbers.
- Check for a temporary restriction: if you have sent many messages quickly or recipients marked messages as spam, wait 24 hours before trying again.
- Allow time after a number transfer: a recently ported Voice number may not be able to text until three business days after the transfer completes.
- Look in Spam for missing incoming texts: messages may be filtered there.
