The best model router depends on what you need it to optimize and how much control you want over the eligible models. OpenRouter, LiteLLM and Microsoft Foundry have the clearest documented product capabilities in this shortlist. RouteLLM is a research framework, while NotDiamond, Azure-Router and vLLM Semantic Router are provisional candidates here—not equally validated product recommendations.
These seven options are not a proven universal ranking. Their routing methods, deployment models and evidence differ, so use the comparison below to identify candidates, then test them against your own prompts.

What an automatic model router does
An automatic model router selects a language model for an incoming request, rather than asking an application or user to choose one every time. Depending on the system, selection may rely on task classification, usage signals, configurable rules or tiers, or a learned preference model. A router might aim to reduce cost, improve response quality, match a model to a task, or balance those goals.

A low-cost choice may be unsuitable for a complex task, while a quality-focused route may spend more than a routine request warrants. Routing also adds a decision layer whose behavior and model pool can change.

The three options with documented product detail
OpenRouter Auto Router: hosted, market-informed selection
OpenRouter documents a router that classifies prompts into task types and ranks candidate models using anonymized aggregate spend for each task type over a trailing seven-day window. It then applies a cost tier and any applicable account or request restrictions. The documentation says the selected model is charged at its standard rate and Auto Router adds no separate fee.
This approach can be useful if you want hosted selection informed by usage across the service rather than maintaining your own routing logic. You have some control: OpenRouter documents allowed and excluded model patterns. Check the live catalog and settings before relying on a particular model pool; the catalog and behavior are not fixed.

- WiFi 6E Tri-Band Mesh WiFi – Cover up to 7,200 Sq.Ft with next-gen seamless WiFi and make dead zones and buffering a thing of the past¹ ²
- Brand-New 6 GHz Band – Experience the latest frequency of WiFi, eliminating interference from all legacy devices. The 6 GHz band can work as a backhaul to ensure stable connections between nodes by default. You can switch it to Wi-Fi Network mode and connect your WiFi 6E-compatible devices to 6GHz Network³
- True Tri-Band Speed – All three WiFi bands work together to unleash your network’s total speeds up to 5,400 Mbps for 200 devices(6 GHz: 2402 Mbps (HE160);5 GHz: 2402 Mbps (HE160);2.4 GHz: 574 Mbps)¹ ³
- Our Cybersecurity Commitment - TP-Link is a signatory of the U.S. Cybersecurity and Infrastructure Security Agency’s (CISA) Secure-by-Design pledge. This device is designed, built, and maintained, with advanced security as a core requirement.
- Unlock the Full Potential of WiFi 6 - Opening the 6 GHz band will change the game for WiFi 6. WiFi 6 brings about upgraded performance in network efficiency and capacity. Whereas the advantages of WiFi 6 are not fully realized while competing with transmissions from WiFi 5 (or other radios). The 6 GHz band is available only for WiFi 6 traffic, allowing WiFi 6 to meet its intended potential
LiteLLM Auto Router: configurable gateway routing
LiteLLM describes an Auto Router configurable through a dashboard, a configuration file or templates. Its documentation discusses routing tiers as well as newer complexity-, semantic- and adaptive-routing approaches. The gateway documentation also covers load balancing and routing groups, making this a candidate for teams that want routing within a configurable gateway rather than only a managed selection service.
Do these 3 things before closing this tab:
1Fix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitches2Clear out junk files and repair common Windows errors3Scan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minuteConfirm the current status of the Auto Router feature, any edition or add-on requirement, and the operational work involved in your chosen deployment. The documentation establishes configurable routing capabilities, but does not make every setup equivalent in maintenance burden.

Microsoft Foundry model router: managed cloud routing
Microsoft describes a trained router deployed as a Foundry model. Its documented modes are Balanced, Quality and Cost, and the user can restrict routing to a selected subset of models. This is the most explicitly mode-based option in the shortlist.
Eligibility depends on the supported model pool and the deployment, region and cloud prerequisites applicable to your account. Verify those in Microsoft’s current documentation rather than assuming that availability in one region or account applies everywhere.

Research paths and provisional candidates
RouteLLM: a research framework, not a turnkey hosted service
RouteLLM’s authors describe preference-data-trained routers that dynamically choose between a stronger and a weaker model to balance response quality and cost. Their 2024 paper abstract reports cost reductions of over two times in certain evaluated cases without compromising response quality. That result is specific to the paper’s benchmark cases; it is not a general savings guarantee or a head-to-head result against today’s commercial routers.
Consider RouteLLM if you are evaluating a research or software implementation path and can assess the work of adapting and operating it. The paper does not establish that it is a hosted commercial platform or an out-of-box enterprise service.

NotDiamond, Azure-Router and vLLM Semantic Router: verify before choosing
These three names appear in a 2026 router-comparison paper’s search result, but the available evidence does not establish current feature sets, availability, pricing, integrations or operating requirements. They are leads for further evaluation, not detailed recommendations on the same evidentiary footing as the first three options.
In particular, the Azure-Router label in that comparison should not be conflated with Microsoft Foundry’s documented model router. A separate research comparison mention is not proof that two names describe the same system.
Choose by objective, control and deployment
- Routing objective: Decide whether the priority is cost, response quality, task suitability or a configurable balance. Foundry documents Balanced, Quality and Cost modes; OpenRouter uses task-specific aggregate-spend rankings with cost tiers.
- Eligible model pool: Check whether you can restrict or exclude models and how the pool changes. OpenRouter documents allowed and excluded model patterns; Foundry supports a selected subset.
- Deployment and ownership: Distinguish a managed cloud router, hosted gateway, self-operated gateway and research framework. They place different demands on operations and create different dependencies on a provider or implementation.
- Evidence for your workload: Do not infer a universal winner from the available evidence. LLMRouterBench’s OpenRouter analysis used a model-pool snapshot dated December 1, 2025, and warns that availability may change; that historical snapshot is not today’s supported pool.
Evaluate routers with your own prompts
- Build a representative prompt set. Include routine requests and the difficult cases your application actually receives; preserve the same prompts and relevant context for each candidate.
- Set the eligible models and constraints. Record the models allowed, excluded or selected, along with each router’s mode, tier or configuration. This makes a result interpretable when the pool or routing policy changes.
- Score response quality against task-specific criteria. Use consistent criteria for correctness, completeness and format, and review failures rather than judging only a few standout responses.
- Record cost and latency per request. Compare the resulting distribution across your prompt set, not just an overall average that can hide expensive or slow outliers.
- Check compatibility and failure behavior. Test the tools, output formats and other model capabilities your application depends on, and observe what happens when a route is unavailable or returns an unusable response.
- Recheck after material changes. Supported models and routing behavior can change; rerun the evaluation when the eligible pool, configuration or application workload changes.
The available sources do not provide a current, apples-to-apples result across all seven candidates. A router that performs well on one workload may not be the right choice for another, so treat published benchmark figures as evidence about their stated evaluation—not a forecast of your bill or quality.
