Run the Xbox network and multiplayer checks, then review Detailed network statistics if your console offers it. A packet-loss reading can confirm that packets failed to reach their destination, but it cannot by itself tell you whether the cause is Wi-Fi, your router, your ISP’s path, or a game service. Compare results across connection types, games, and times before deciding where to troubleshoot.
Run the Xbox connection tests
On Xbox One, Microsoft’s documented legacy path is Guide → Settings → All settings → Network → Network settings. From the troubleshooting panel, choose Test network connection and Test multiplayer connection. If available, open Detailed network statistics to see measurements such as packet loss, latency, and wireless strength. These menu instructions come from an older Xbox One Microsoft Q&A page; the exact labels on Xbox Series X|S may differ.

The connection test checks connectivity, while the multiplayer test is relevant when party or multiplayer features are failing. Run both, and note the result and any error message rather than relying on a single number.
An old Microsoft Q&A answer suggests troubleshooting when packet loss is above 5% in its Xbox One context. That is circa-2016 advice, not a current universal Xbox threshold, a guaranteed failure point, or a promise that a lower reading will work for every game. Microsoft’s Xbox development-kit documentation also lists simulated loss levels for developer test profiles, but those are test settings, not consumer pass/fail targets or household connection statistics: Xbox network stress.

Build a useful baseline
Record enough detail to compare like with like. For each run, note:
- The packet-loss and latency readings shown by the console.
- Whether the Xbox is connected by Wi-Fi or Ethernet; for Wi-Fi, include the displayed wireless-strength reading if available.
- The time of the test and whether the problem occurs repeatedly or only occasionally.
- Whether the issue affects several games or services, or just one.
- Any Xbox or game error message, including its exact wording or code.
No current consumer Xbox packet-loss or latency target is established by the cited material, so treat the figures as clues to compare rather than pass/fail limits.

Compare Wi-Fi with Ethernet
If the console is using Wi-Fi, connect it directly to the router with Ethernet if practical, then repeat the same Xbox checks under otherwise similar conditions. A consistent improvement on wired connection makes wireless conditions worth investigating; no change suggests that Wi-Fi alone may not explain the issue. This comparison narrows possibilities but does not prove the cable or router is responsible, and it is not a guaranteed fix. The cited Xbox instructions do not establish that a particular Ethernet cable category reduces packet loss.

Use the pattern to narrow the cause
Packet loss means that some packets did not reach their intended destination. Microsoft’s Windows Client guidance notes that some loss can be normal and does not always cause higher-level networking problems. Its examples of possible local causes include firewall or policy drops, resource pressure, neighbor-resolution failures, invalid packets, and missing routes; remote possibilities include congestion, remote policy, unreachable endpoints, expired session state, and MTU problems. These are general Windows networking examples, not confirmed diagnoses for a particular Xbox.

- Loss or disconnects mainly on Wi-Fi: compare the console’s wireless-strength reading and rerun the test over Ethernet. A difference points toward investigating the wireless connection, but does not identify a specific fault.
- The issue persists over Ethernet and across multiple games: save the repeated readings and timestamps. If other devices or a network administrator also observe problems, share those observations with whoever manages the network or with your ISP. An Xbox reading alone cannot identify a faulty provider or network hop.
- The problem appears in one game or partner service: check that service’s own status and support information as well as the Xbox results. Microsoft’s game certification guidance distinguishes outages involving partner services from Xbox network failures: XR-074: Loss of Connectivity to XBOX and Partner Services.
- Results vary by time: repeat the same checks at the times symptoms occur and compare them with a run when play is normal. A single reading is only a snapshot.

What Xbox packet-loss results cannot tell you
The console’s reading is not a map of the route to a game server. It does not identify which device or hop dropped traffic, establish that your ISP is at fault, or prove that a service is healthy. Compare the Xbox connection test with the multiplayer test, repeat both, and note whether the symptom is limited to a game or appears on other devices. These comparisons narrow the scope; they do not independently locate the failure.

Microsoft’s Xbox development-kit documentation describes QoS measurements in a game-development context, not consumer troubleshooting standards: Quality of Service measurements. No cited source establishes a current Xbox-wide consumer packet-loss threshold or a population statistic for household Xbox connections.

Microsoft’s Pktmon and packet-trace instructions are for supported Windows clients. They can help a Windows administrator capture traffic and investigate local drop reasons, but they are not Xbox console features and their commands should not be run on the Xbox. If deeper traces are needed, a network administrator can use suitable tools on a Windows device or network equipment.
