Plugging a USB drive into an Android phone does not automatically add its files to a Jellyfin library. Jellyfin’s Android app is a client for watching media, while library folders must be readable by the machine running Jellyfin Server. If your phone is only the player, connect it to your existing server; attach the drive to the server’s host instead. An Android phone used as an experimental server host is a different, unconfirmed setup that requires checking both USB support and server access to the mounted files.
First, identify which device runs Jellyfin Server
Jellyfin separates the server that stores and serves media from the client app used to browse and play it. Jellyfin lists its Android app among its clients. A library location is a path the server can read, and administrators can add more than one path to a library or enter one manually if it is not shown in the picker (Jellyfin library documentation).

- Phone is the player; server is elsewhere: A drive attached to the phone does not become a folder on the separate server. Attach the drive to the computer or server that runs Jellyfin, then add its mounted directory there.
- Phone is intended as the server host: Treat this as an experiment, not an officially documented Jellyfin-on-Android workflow. Confirm that the particular server process can access the USB volume and that the volume remains mounted reliably.
A file manager seeing the drive on Android is not proof that Jellyfin Server can read it. Android mediates third-party app access to portable storage through the Storage Access Framework, so access granted to one app does not automatically establish access for another (Android’s traditional storage documentation).
Do these 3 things before closing this tab:
1Scan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minute2Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problems3Fix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitchesCheck that the phone can use the USB drive
Android supports portable USB storage, and Android’s USB OTG configuration examples include storage devices. However, the phone must support USB host/OTG, and compatibility depends on the specific phone, connector, adapter, and drive (Android USB configuration examples).

- Check the phone’s specifications or manufacturer help for USB host or OTG support.
- Choose an OTG adapter or cable that matches the phone’s port, such as USB-C, and the drive’s connector.
- Connect the drive and check that Android mounts it and that a file manager can browse its files. If the drive does not mount, check the connection and the device-specific compatibility guidance. A powered hub may help if the drive draws more power than the phone supplies, but there is no universal power rule established here.
A USB-C OTG adapter for Android is only a possible way to connect compatible hardware. It cannot make a phone support USB host mode, turn a client into a server, or grant Jellyfin access to a folder.
Make the drive available to the Jellyfin server
If Jellyfin Server runs on another machine
Connect the drive to that machine—not to the Android player. Once the host mounts the drive, add the directory containing your media to the appropriate Jellyfin library. The directory must be accessible to the server process, and you can enter the path manually if Jellyfin’s folder picker does not show it (Jellyfin library documentation).

- Note: Make sure your smartphone is equipped with OTG function and need to open OTG function in Settings when you plug memory stick, then you can transfer easily data bewteen different devices
If you are experimenting with a server on Android
First confirm that the phone can mount the drive. Then verify that the server process itself can read the intended folder using the storage access Android has granted it. The official documentation cited here describes Android’s portable-storage access and the Jellyfin client, but does not establish a supported Jellyfin Server installation on Android with access to USB OTG storage. Do not assume a folder visible in a file manager will appear to the server.
Keep removable storage available
Jellyfin needs the media path to remain available. Its storage guidance warns that scheduled maintenance can remove library items when their storage is unavailable (Jellyfin storage documentation). A portable drive can be unplugged or lose its mount, so use a stable connection and avoid relying on a removable volume as though it were permanently attached.

Do not adopt a USB drive connected to a phone or tablet as internal storage. Android’s guidance says such USB devices should never be considered for adoption, because accidental disconnection can risk data loss or corruption. Adopted storage is also formatted and encrypted for use with one Android device, making it a poor choice for a generally portable media library (Android adoptable storage guidance).
