To find out whether slow internet comes from your broadband service or your home Wi-Fi, test a computer connected to your router by Ethernet, then compare it with a Wi-Fi test in the room where the problem occurs. Repeat both tests at different times and record the results; one speed test is only a snapshot, not proof of a persistent provider fault.
What a speed test measures—and what it cannot tell you
A speed test commonly reports download speed, upload speed and, if available, latency or ping. Speeds are usually shown in Mbps, meaning megabits per second; Mbps is not the same as MB/s, or megabytes per second. Compare the test’s download and upload figures with the speeds in your broadband plan. The U.S. Federal Communications Commission (FCC) recommends starting with the plan you subscribed to: FCC Broadband Speed Guide.

A result is affected by more than the connection entering your home. Wi-Fi signal, the computer or phone, other devices using the network, and the distance to the test server can all influence software-based results. FCC material cautions that these tests do not necessarily isolate the baseline connection supplied by the internet provider: FCC Measuring Broadband America. That is why a repeatable wired test is a better starting point when you are asking, “Am I getting the speed I pay for?”
How to test your home internet speed consistently
- Check your plan. Find the download and upload speeds your provider advertises or promises for your service tier. Keep those figures handy for comparison.
- Connect a computer to the router by Ethernet. This reduces the influence of Wi-Fi signal and interference. Ofcom, the UK communications regulator, recommends testing over an Ethernet connection where possible: Ofcom: broadband speeds.
- Reduce other network activity. Where practical, pause downloads, cloud backups, game updates and streaming. Ask household members to do the same for the test. Other active devices can affect the result.
- Run a speed test and record the details. Note download, upload and latency or ping if displayed, as well as the time, device, and whether the connection was wired or Wi-Fi.
- Repeat the test. Take readings at different times and on several days. Ofcom notes that speeds can vary by time and advises testing more than once: Ofcom: broadband speeds. Use the same device and method where possible so the readings are easier to compare.
- Test Wi-Fi where the slowdown happens. Run a second test on Wi-Fi from the affected room, using the same device if practical. A slower Wi-Fi result alone does not show that the broadband line is faulty.
A simple record makes patterns easier to spot:
| Time and date | Connection and location | Device | Download | Upload | Latency or ping | Other devices active? |
|---|---|---|---|---|---|---|
| Record each test | Ethernet or Wi-Fi; room if Wi-Fi | Record the device | Record Mbps | Record Mbps | Record the displayed value, if available | Yes or no; note heavy activity |
How to tell whether the problem is Wi-Fi, a device or the provider
Wired test is close to plan speed, but Wi-Fi is slow
This pattern points toward conditions inside the home rather than proving a broadband-line fault. Distance from the router, walls, interference, router placement, the router’s capabilities, the device’s Wi-Fi capability and other active devices can all affect wireless performance. The FCC notes that 2.4 GHz Wi-Fi generally offers broader coverage, while 5 GHz generally supports faster data processing; the better choice depends on distance and surroundings. See the FCC Broadband Speed Guide and Ofcom’s broadband guidance.

- CONNECT MORE DEVICES: Wi-Fi 6 technology communicates more data to more devices simultaneously using revolutionary OFDMA technology
- EXTENSIVE COVERAGE: Achieve the strong, reliable WiFi coverage with Archer AX1800 as it focuses signal strength to your devices far away using Beamforming technology, 4 high-gain antennas and an advanced front-end module (FEM) chipset
- OUR CYBERSECURITY COMMITMENT: TP-Link is a signatory of the U.S. Cybersecurity and Infrastructure Security Agency’s (CISA) Secure-by-Design pledge. This device is designed, built, and maintained, with advanced security as a core requirement.
Both wired and Wi-Fi tests are unexpectedly low
First confirm that you are comparing like with like: check the plan, test over Ethernet, and limit other household activity. Check whether the provider reports an outage or service disruption, then restart the equipment. If repeated wired readings remain lower than expected, contact the provider with your test record. The FCC advises checking for outages and provider troubleshooting guidance, and contacting the provider when speeds are slower than expected: FCC Broadband Speed Guide.
Only one device is slow
If other devices work normally in the same location, the affected device may be the cause. Restart it, close unused apps and check for pending updates or security software activity. Ofcom identifies the device itself as one possible source of slow performance: Ofcom’s broadband guidance.

- Tri-Band WiFi 6E Router - Up to 5400 Mbps WiFi for faster browsing, streaming, gaming and downloading, all at the same time(6 GHz: 2402 Mbps;5 GHz: 2402 Mbps;2.4 GHz: 574 Mbps)
- WiFi 6E Unleashed – The 6 GHz band brings more bandwidth, faster speeds, and near-zero latency; Enables more responsive gaming and video chatting
- Connect More Devices—True Tri-Band and OFDMA technology increase capacity by 4 times to enable simultaneous transmission to more devices
- Unique Design, More RAM, Better Processing - A unique housing design provides optimal heat dissipation, combined with a 1.0 GHz dual-core CPU and 512 MB High-Speed Memory, the AXE75 is designed for long-term reliability and performance.
- EasyMesh-compatible - Extend network range even more by adding EasyMesh-compatible routers, extenders, or wireless powerline adapters for a seamless, whole-home connection. Eliminate dead zones, drops, and lag as you move across your home.
Readings vary a lot
Repeat tests under comparable conditions before drawing a conclusion. Changes in household activity, Wi-Fi conditions, the device and the test server can change software-test results. Compare the date and time, device, connection method, location and active devices alongside each speed reading rather than treating the highest or lowest result as definitive.

Low-cost troubleshooting, in order
- Check the connection and power. Confirm that the router and any Wi-Fi booster or mesh units are powered and connected. If you have full-fibre service, check that the optical network terminal (ONT) is powered and connected as well.
- Pause competing activity. Temporarily stop large downloads, game updates and high-definition streaming. If practical, disconnect unused devices and retest to see whether the readings change.
- Restart the network equipment. Ofcom suggests switching the router off for about 30 seconds before turning it back on. Allow it to reconnect, then test again.
- Review recent changes. If the issue began after moving the router or adding electrical or network equipment, undo that change where practical and retest.
- Check equipment capability before replacing it. A router that cannot support the speed tier in your plan may limit performance; the FCC says an outdated router may need updating or replacement if it cannot provide subscribed speeds. A mesh system or booster may help with weak coverage, but it is a coverage remedy—not a fix for every slow connection—and can affect speed.
- Contact the provider if wired tests remain low. Share your plan’s speeds, dates and times, wired and Wi-Fi readings, affected devices and locations, and any outage checks. Ask the provider to investigate the service rather than relying on a single Wi-Fi result.
What to tell your internet provider
A concise, repeatable record helps support staff distinguish a household Wi-Fi issue from a problem that also appears on a wired connection. Include:

What to know if you are in the UK
Ofcom’s guidance describes a specific UK consumer remedy: if a customer’s speed falls below the level their provider promised, the provider has one month to improve performance before the customer must be allowed to leave without penalty. This applies in the context of the relevant provider code and customer eligibility; check Ofcom’s current guidance and your provider’s terms before relying on it: Ofcom: broadband speeds. This UK-specific remedy should not be assumed to apply in the United States or elsewhere.
