Altermagnets vs. Ferromagnets and Antiferromagnets: Key Differences

Altermagnets combine compensated magnetic order with symmetry-driven, momentum-dependent spin splitting—a distinctive electronic structure unlike the basic ferromagnetic or conventional antiferromagnetic cases.

Ferromagnets have aligned magnetic moments and usually a net magnetic moment; conventional antiferromagnets have opposing moments that cancel. Altermagnets also have compensated, opposing magnetic order, but their crystal symmetry allows electronic bands to split by spin in a pattern that changes with momentum. That combination—not simply “stronger antiferromagnetism”—is what distinguishes an altermagnet.

How the three kinds of magnetism compare

The comparison below describes idealized cases. Real materials can have more complicated magnetic structures, spin-orbit effects, or slight canting, so classification depends on the material’s symmetry and electronic structure.

Feature Ferromagnet Conventional antiferromagnet Altermagnet
Magnetic order Moments align in a common direction in the simple collinear picture. Opposing-spin sublattices compensate one another. Opposing-spin sublattices compensate one another, often in a collinear arrangement.
Net magnetization Generally nonzero in the ordered state. Zero in the ideal compensated state. Zero by symmetry in the ideal compensated state.
How magnetic sublattices are related A simplified model has one principal aligned magnetic sublattice. In the conventional symmetry case, opposite-spin sublattices may be related by translation or inversion. In defining examples, opposite-spin sublattices are related by a crystal operation such as rotation that is neither translation nor inversion.
Electronic bands Spin-split; in the basic comparison, the spin-polarization sign does not alternate with momentum. Spin-degenerate in the conventional symmetry case. Spin-split, with the sign of the splitting changing across momentum space.
Practical intuition Produces a bulk magnetic moment and associated magnetic responses. Compensation means small stray fields; the characteristic altermagnetic band splitting is absent in the conventional symmetry case. Combines compensated order with selected spin-dependent electronic responses; possible uses remain under investigation.

Why symmetry makes altermagnets different

Magnetic order describes how the moments are arranged. Electronic band structure describes the allowed energies of electrons as a function of their momentum in a crystal. The relation between opposite-spin sublattices determines whether the electronic spectrum remains equivalent for the two spin directions or can split.

In conventional antiferromagnetic cases, sublattices related by translation or inversion can preserve spin degeneracy. In altermagnets, a different crystal operation—often a rotation in the defining examples—relates the opposite-spin sublattices. The resulting spin splitting varies with momentum and crystal direction, even though the opposing magnetic moments cancel overall. The foundational comparison is set out by Šmejkal and colleagues in “Emerging Research Landscape of Altermagnetism” and explained by the American Physical Society in “Altermagnetism Then and Now.”

This is why “zero net magnetization” alone does not distinguish an altermagnet from a conventional antiferromagnet. The key is the combination of compensated order and symmetry-allowed, momentum-dependent spin splitting.

What the spin splitting means—and what it does not

Spin splitting means that electronic states with opposite spin can have different energies at a given momentum. In an altermagnet, the pattern is not a uniform, same-sign polarization across momentum space: the sign alternates as momentum changes. This makes the band structure distinct from both the spin-degenerate conventional antiferromagnetic case and the basic ferromagnetic picture.

Experimental evidence has been reported in studied materials: Carmine Autieri’s Nature News and Views article of 14 February 2024 reports that two Nature papers presented evidence of spin splitting in materials classed as altermagnets. That supports the phenomenon in those studied materials; it does not establish every predicted feature in every proposed candidate.

What altermagnets might be used for

Researchers are investigating whether altermagnetic materials can support useful spin-dependent transport and other responses while retaining compensated magnetic order. The relevant research includes anomalous Hall effects, magneto-optical responses, and tunneling magnetoresistance. A review of spin and charge transport in spin-polarized antiferromagnetic metals, including collinear altermagnets, appears in Shim and colleagues’ 2025 Annual Review of Condensed Matter Physics article.

Potential device directions discussed by the APS include magnetic tunneling junctions, nano-oscillators, Josephson junctions, and qubits. These are research prospects, not proof of commercially available products or established performance advantages. The APS account also notes that confirming all predicted features in real materials remains challenging. Domain control matters: in a sample containing multiple domains, effects of interest can cancel, so producing a suitable single-domain sample can be important. How many candidate materials have been identified?

A 2026 high-throughput screening study summarized in the APS Physical Review Materials collection screened 2,287 experimentally characterized magnetic structures and identified 180 robust altermagnets. This is a computational screening outcome: it is not a count of commercially usable devices, nor does it mean every listed material has had all altermagnetic properties experimentally confirmed.

Which distinction matters most?

  • For bulk magnetic behavior: a ferromagnet usually has a net moment; ideal conventional antiferromagnets and altermagnets compensate their opposite moments.
  • For electronic structure: conventional antiferromagnets in the symmetry case described above are spin-degenerate, while altermagnets can have spin-split bands whose polarization alternates with momentum.
  • For applications: altermagnets are a developing research area, not a consumer product category. Specific materials, domains, and predicted responses still need validation.
