For a reliable PFAS result, have a qualified laboratory analyze a drinking-water sample. If your home uses public water, first ask the utility for available PFAS results. If you have a private well—or want an independent tap-water result—contact your state laboratory certification program or health or environmental agency for a current list of qualified labs. A mail-in kit can help collect and ship a sample, but it is not an instant home test.
How do I test my water for PFAS?
- Identify your water source. Find out whether your home is served by a public water system or a private well; the next step differs.
- Check for existing results. If you use public water, ask your utility whether it has tested for PFAS. Request the results and ask which sampling locations and PFAS analytes they cover. A system result may not represent the water at your particular tap.
- Find a qualified laboratory. For a private well or an independent tap sample, ask your state laboratory certification program or state health or environmental agency for its current recommendations and laboratory list. EPA advises that homeowners contact their state about certified PFAS laboratories or other testing recommendations. EPA laboratory-method guidance and EPA private-well guidance explain the distinction.
- Confirm the test details before ordering. Ask the laboratory about its current state certification or other state-recommended qualification for drinking-water PFAS analysis, the method and version it uses, the analytes in its panel, reporting limits, price, turnaround time, and collection and shipping requirements.
- Collect and ship the sample exactly as instructed. Use the lab-supplied container and follow its handling, shipping, and chain-of-custody directions. Do not substitute a generic bottle or assume that procedures for regulated utility monitoring apply unchanged to a private test.
- Review the report. Check which compounds were tested, their reported concentrations, units, and reporting limits. Ask the lab or your state or local health or environmental agency to explain anything unclear or to advise you about elevated results.
Can I test my tap water for PFAS at home?
You can collect a sample at home, including with a mail-in kit, but the test itself is laboratory analysis. EPA Methods 533 and 537.1 use laboratory techniques; a collection kit does not make a strip or instant home test equivalent. Before buying a kit, confirm that its laboratory analysis—not merely the collection materials—uses a suitable drinking-water method and has appropriate qualifications. The Alaska Department of Environmental Conservation’s March 2026 guide also describes PFAS testing as a lab-based process.

What does a PFAS water test measure?
A result only speaks to the compounds the lab included in its panel. EPA says Methods 533 and 537.1 together can effectively measure 29 unique PFAS in drinking water; Method 533 complements Method 537.1 and can test for 11 additional PFAS. That is not a measurement of every compound in the broad PFAS family. Ask the lab for the named analytes and reporting limits, and check that the test fits your concern.

EPA describes Method 533 as isotope-dilution anion-exchange solid-phase extraction with LC-MS/MS, and Method 537.1 as solid-phase extraction with LC-MS/MS. Both were validated for finished drinking water and may also be effective for ambient groundwater that may be used as drinking water; do not assume they apply unchanged to unrelated sample types. See the EPA comparison of PFAS drinking-water methods and its laboratory-method overview.

Where can I find a lab to test my well water?
Start with your state laboratory certification program or state health or environmental agency. Ask for laboratories qualified to analyze PFAS in drinking water and confirm the lab’s current status directly with the state program. Private-well owners generally need to arrange their own testing: EPA does not regulate private wells under federal drinking-water standards. Local recommendations and available laboratories can vary by state.
How should I compare labs and mail-in kits?
| What to check | What to ask |
|---|---|
| Laboratory qualification | Is the laboratory currently certified by my state, or otherwise recommended by the state, for PFAS drinking-water analysis? |
| Method | Does the lab use EPA Method 533 or 537.1? What exact version does it use, and has it modified the method? |
| Analyte panel | Which PFAS will appear on the report? Does the panel cover the compounds relevant to my concern? |
| Reporting | What are the reporting limits? Will the report list each analyte, its concentration, units, and any result below the reporting limit? |
| Collection and shipping | Does the lab supply the bottle and instructions? What shipping, holding-time, and chain-of-custody requirements apply? |
| Cost and timing | What is the price, and when should I expect the report? |
| Purpose | Is this an individual household screening test or regulatory compliance monitoring for a public water system? |
EPA identifies approved method versions and laboratory certification requirements for regulated public-system monitoring under the federal PFAS drinking-water rule. An individual household test is not automatically a compliance test. Other methods may suit some non-compliance purposes, but EPA has not necessarily evaluated them or approved them for regulatory monitoring; ask the lab to explain a method’s performance and why it fits your purpose. See EPA’s sampling guidance and PFAS rule implementation information.

What should I do after getting the result?
If the report is difficult to interpret, ask the lab to explain its units, reporting limits, and analytes. For an elevated result, contact your state or local health or environmental agency for advice suited to your location and water source. Testing and treatment are separate decisions: a result can inform whether to consider treatment, but it does not by itself establish which option is appropriate.

EPA cautions that current filter certifications do not indicate reduction to the levels in the current EPA drinking-water standard. Filter maintenance and timely replacement also matter.
