If only one app or recording is affected, that points toward the app or content; if built-in sounds and several apps are affected, the speaker or another device-level factor becomes more plausible. These checks help isolate the cause, but they cannot confirm a hardware fault on their own.
First check where the iPhone is sending audio
If wireless headphones are connected, audio may be playing through them rather than the iPhone’s built-in speaker. Compare the sound on the headphones with the built-in speaker, and disconnect the headphones before judging the speaker. If distortion occurs only on wireless headphones, follow Apple’s separate guidance for sound that cuts out or is distorted on Bluetooth headphones.

Compare the same audio in different apps
- Choose a familiar audio recording or track that normally sounds clear, and play it at a moderate volume.
- Play the same audio in another app, if it is available there, or compare similar known-good audio in a second app.
- Note whether the distortion follows one app or item, or occurs across different apps and content.
If only one app or one item crackles, investigate that app or the recording before assuming the speaker is faulty. If several apps sound distorted, continue with the device checks below. This is a useful comparison, not a definitive Apple diagnostic test; Apple does not publish a formal procedure that conclusively separates an app problem from speaker hardware.

- Open Settings > Sounds or Settings > Sounds & Haptics; the wording can vary by iOS version.
- Move the Ringtone and Alerts slider back and forth several times and listen for distortion or missing sound.
Apple says the speaker might need service if the slider produces no sound or its speaker button is dimmed. A normal result does not rule out an intermittent problem or one that appears only at particular volume levels or during certain playback.

Compare with a speakerphone call
Make a phone call and turn on speakerphone. If static or crackling occurs during calls but not with other audio, network or reception conditions may be involved. Apple recommends trying again later or calling from a different location. A call-only symptom does not, by itself, establish that the built-in speaker is damaged.
Check for blocked speaker or receiver openings
Remove the case, film, or screen protector temporarily, then inspect the speaker opening and the receiver at the top of the iPhone. Apple recommends removing cases and films that could block sound. If an opening needs cleaning, Apple Support advises: “If necessary, clean the speaker or receiver opening with a small, soft-bristled brush. Make sure that the brush is clean and dry.” Do not use liquid, sharp objects, or disassemble the phone. Cleaning is a basic check, not proof that a hardware fault has been fixed.

Review audio settings when the symptom is limited
One channel sounds different
Open Settings > Accessibility > Audio & Visual. Check Mono Audio and Stereo Audio Balance if sound seems missing, weak, or distorted on one side. Apple documents these controls in its iOS 26 audio settings guide.

Open Settings > Apps > Music and check EQ and Sound Check. Sound Check normalizes audio levels, while EQ changes playback characteristics; these settings are relevant when the symptom is specific to Music. Apple’s Music settings guide describes the controls.

Decide what to do from the pattern
- One app or item only: The app or content is a more likely place to investigate; compare other content and apps before changing device settings.
- Several apps, plus the Ringtone and Alerts slider: A device-level issue becomes more plausible. Remove possible obstructions and arrange an Apple service assessment if it continues.
- Calls only: Try a different location or time to check whether reception is contributing.
- Wireless headphones only: Check the headphone connection and use Apple’s headphone troubleshooting guidance.
Apple says persistent sound problems may require service. These checks cannot determine remotely whether the eventual repair would involve the speaker or another component.
