If Voice Access stops listening, first check whether it is paused or no longer activated; if it is listening but missing commands, check recognition conditions such as connectivity and background noise. Update Voice Access and the Google app, verify microphone and notification permissions, then work through the checks below before assuming your microphone or installation has failed.
First, tell whether Voice Access is listening
A paused or inactive service needs to be restarted; a service that is listening but failing to recognize words needs different checks. On Voice Access version 17.0 or later, the shortcut is required to control listening. Removing it turns Voice Access off. Restart listening with your selected shortcut, the Voice Access notification, or the Voice Access app.
Activation behavior differs in versions earlier than 17.0, including the older Activation button. Check your installed version before following menu instructions or assuming a control is missing. Google’s setup guide covers English, Spanish, German, Italian, French, Portuguese, and Japanese; commands and menus can also vary by Android device and language. Update the apps and confirm permissions
- Install the latest available version of Voice Access and the Google app.
- In Android app permissions, confirm Voice Access can use the microphone. Without microphone access, it cannot hear commands.
- Allow notification access if you want to start or pause listening from the Voice Access notification.
- Check Google’s recommended device and settings configuration in the setup guide.
If it hears you but misses commands
Try these recognition checks before changing hardware or reinstalling anything. Google recommends checking connectivity and improving the conditions in which speech is captured.

- Confirm the phone has a cellular or Wi-Fi connection.
- Move to a quieter place and speak more slowly and clearly.
- Repeat the command.
- Turn off vibration, which Google says might interfere with speech recognition.
- If commands are still missed, try a headset with a microphone. This is an optional aid, not a guaranteed fix; results depend on the device and headset.

If Voice Access freezes or cuts off a command
Wait a few seconds before trying again. Google says Voice Access may appear to freeze after a long command or when another app is trying to listen at the same time. That is a possible explanation, not a diagnosis of a particular phone.

Check screen lock, wake behavior, and Do Not Disturb
Voice Access stops listening when the device is locked or its screen turns off. Its wake behavior can be configured to always start listening, start unless it was previously paused, or never start. If listening fails after the screen wakes, review this setting in Voice Access Settings.
Do Not Disturb can hide the Voice Access notification, making its listening controls harder to reach. Google’s settings guidance describes changing notification display options so the notification is visible. Consult Google’s Voice Access settings guide.

Look for a no-speech timeout or battery-related symptom
If “Time out after no speech” is enabled, Voice Access pauses after 30 seconds without speech. Check this setting if it repeatedly stops during quiet periods. Google says Voice Access uses almost no battery while inactive and more while listening, so power use may matter if you need continuous listening. The timeout and battery guidance is in Google’s settings documentation.
Consider another way to activate listening
If the difficulty is activating Voice Access rather than recognizing speech, Google documents using a physical activation key, keyboard, or switch connected over USB or Bluetooth. Treat accessories as optional and verify compatibility with your Android device; Google’s guidance does not endorse particular models.

Check offline speech and privacy settings
On Android 13 and later, Google says offline speech recognition requires an on-device language pack. To download one, open System → Language & region → Speech. Availability and exact labels can vary by device.
Google says speech is primarily processed on-device, but audio may be sent to Google servers depending on configuration and system language. Its setup documentation says audio sent to Google is not saved, and audio and transcripts are not stored unless you enable “Help improve Voice Access Commands.” Google also warns that anyone may control an awake, unlocked device with their voice.
