How to Test Whether a Website Screenshot Change Was Caused by a Browser Update

A changed screenshot is not proof of a browser bug. Compare old and updated versions of the same browser while keeping the rest of the capture setup fixed, then repeat and reverse the test.

To test whether a browser update caused a website screenshot to change, capture the same page with the old and updated versions of the same browser while holding the operating system, test setup, page state, viewport, and capture settings constant. Repeat the captures and compare them with the known-good baseline. If the difference appears with the updated version and goes away when you return to the old one, that supports a browser-version-related cause—but it does not by itself prove a browser-engine bug.

Preserve the failure before changing anything

Keep the unexpected screenshot and the known-good baseline. Record the URL or test route, the steps or fixture state that produced the image, and the time of the run. Do not update the expected screenshot yet: replacing the baseline before diagnosis can erase the evidence you need to investigate.

Record the browser and test environment

Write down the browser product and channel, its exact version, the automation framework and version, the operating system or container image, whether capture is headed or headless, the viewport, device scale factor, and relevant browser settings. Also note any inputs that could change what the page displays, such as test data, fonts, or timing.

These details matter because rendering can vary with the host operating system and version, settings, hardware, power source, and headless mode. Playwright recommends running visual comparisons in the same environment as the baseline: Playwright: Visual comparisons. If you use Playwright, record its version separately from the browser version: Playwright ties its managed browser binaries to Playwright releases. See Playwright: Browsers.

Run a controlled old-versus-new comparison

  1. Choose one browser family. Compare two versions of the same browser, such as the prior and updated Chrome versions. Comparing Chrome with Firefox can reveal a browser-family difference, but cannot establish that a recent Chrome update caused the change.
  2. Hold other inputs fixed. Use the same OS or container image, test code, automation framework version, page data and state, viewport, device scale factor, fonts, browser settings, and capture timing. Change only the browser version.
  3. Capture both versions against the same baseline. Save the output from each run with a clear version label. If your test framework supports multiple configurations, Playwright projects can run tests under different configurations and browsers; see Playwright: Projects.
  4. Repeat the captures. A single mismatch may come from unstable page content or capture timing. Playwright’s screenshot assertion waits for two consecutive screenshots to produce the same result before comparing with the expected image; see Playwright: PageAssertions. Regardless of tooling, check that the page has settled before treating a one-off diff as meaningful.
  5. Reverse the test if possible. Run the old version again under the same conditions. If the old rendering returns, while the updated version consistently produces the changed rendering, that strengthens the case for a version-related cause.

For Playwright visual assertions, follow its baseline and comparison guidance in the Visual comparisons documentation. The comparison is only controlled if the baseline and both runs use equivalent capture conditions.

Interpret what the screenshot diff establishes

Observed result What it supports What it does not establish
Old and updated versions both differ from the baseline in the same way A change common to the runs, or a changed shared input, is more plausible than an effect isolated to the update. It does not identify which shared input changed.
Only the updated version repeatedly differs, and the old version restores the baseline Evidence for a browser-version-related visual regression under the tested conditions. It does not prove the browser engine alone is defective; the update may interact with site CSS, fonts, GPU or driver behavior, or the test harness.
One capture differs, but repeated captures do not agree The page or capture may be unstable. A consistent browser-update effect.
A different browser family differs from the baseline A browser-family rendering difference. That a recent update to the original browser caused the difference.

Describe the result as a browser-version-related visual regression unless further isolation establishes a more specific cause. To investigate a suspected defect, check the relevant browser release notes and reduce the page to a minimal reproduction before attributing the problem to the browser.

Control common confounders

  • Environment changes: Keep the OS, container image, host hardware where feasible, and browser settings matched. Rendering can vary with these factors as well as with browser version.
  • Headless versus headed capture: Keep the mode fixed. Playwright notes that Google Chrome and Microsoft Edge use a newer headless implementation that differs from Playwright’s default Chromium headless shell; consult its browser documentation.
  • Automation upgrade: Do not upgrade Playwright at the same time as the browser if you want to isolate the browser update. Its managed browser binaries track Playwright releases, so changing both makes the result ambiguous.
  • Page state and timing: Seed or freeze dynamic data where practical; account for animation, font loading, images, and delayed content. Wait for the relevant content to settle and repeat captures to check for instability.
  • Capture settings: Match viewport, device scale factor, screenshot options, and other relevant browser settings. A changed scale factor or capture mode can create a visual difference without a browser update being the cause.

Document the diagnosis

Keep a compact record with the browser product, channel and versions; automation framework and version; OS or container image; headless or headed mode; viewport and device scale factor; page URL and state; capture settings; number of repeats; and links or filenames for the baseline and outputs. Note whether you reproduced the change in a second environment or browser. This makes the conclusion reviewable and helps distinguish a repeatable version-related effect from a one-run anomaly.

Troubleshooting a failed comparison

  • The two runs do not use the intended browser versions: Check the executable or browser channel actually launched and record its reported version. With Playwright, verify its browser installation and version relationship rather than assuming a framework update changed only the test code.
  • The diff changes between repeat captures: Treat the page as unstable until you identify the moving content or timing. Wait for stable content, control data and animation where possible, and repeat the capture.
  • The old version cannot be reproduced: The test is not yet a controlled old-versus-new comparison. Restore the prior browser in the same environment if available; otherwise, document the missing control and avoid a causal claim.
  • The difference remains after reverting: The browser version alone is not a sufficient explanation. Recheck the environment, test runner, page state, fonts, capture settings, and any other changed input.
  • Only a cross-browser comparison is available: Report a browser-family difference, not an update-caused change. Obtain two versions of the same browser to test the update hypothesis.
