A flash on the camera screen means that button is emitting infrared (IR). If you see no flash, try the phone’s selfie camera before drawing a conclusion. This test identifies the signal from the button you pressed—it does not prove that the whole remote is IR-only or that the TV is receiving the command.
Run the camera test
- Open the phone camera. Use the rear camera first, or the front-facing camera if that is easier to aim.
- Point it at the remote’s front end. The IR transmitter is at the end aimed toward the TV.
- Press and hold Power while watching the camera preview. A visible flash or light on the screen indicates that the tested button is emitting IR. Samsung support describes using a digital camera, including a phone camera, to check for an infrared signal: Samsung Gulf’s camera-test guidance and Samsung Philippines’ guidance.
Some phone cameras filter infrared. If the rear camera shows nothing, repeat the test with the selfie camera; Samsung Germany recommends this when the main camera’s IR filter interferes, and Samsung Philippines notes it can be easier on iPhone (Samsung Germany’s instructions; Samsung Philippines’ guidance).

What the result tells you
If you see a flash
The Power button is emitting IR. That does not establish that every button uses IR, that Bluetooth is absent, or that the TV’s receiver can see the signal. Samsung remotes can use both protocols, depending on model and function. For example, Samsung Slovakia describes a setup in which Power uses IR while other buttons use Bluetooth; Samsung Canada notes that some basic functions can continue over IR when Bluetooth is disconnected, while voice and other smart features need the Bluetooth connection (Samsung Slovakia’s pairing guidance; Samsung Canada’s remote-control LED guidance).

If you see no flash
That is not conclusive until you try another camera, especially the selfie camera, and check the remote’s power. Weak or depleted batteries—or a low charge on a rechargeable or SolarCell remote—can prevent a useful test result. Samsung’s guidance recommends replacing batteries or recharging the remote as appropriate (Samsung Germany; Samsung Philippines).

IR or Bluetooth: practical clues

These are indicators, not a definitive model-identification test. A Smart Remote may use IR for Power or other basic controls, so do not classify a remote by button count or by whether one button works. When the behavior is mixed or unclear, check the manual for the exact TV and remote model. Samsung’s general comparison of classic and Smart Remote behavior is in its Germany support guide.
If the TV still does not respond
No flash after trying both cameras
- Check that batteries are inserted in the correct orientation and have charge; replace weak alkaline batteries if the remote uses them.
- For a rechargeable or SolarCell remote, recharge it according to its model’s instructions.
- Check the battery compartment or exact manual for the required battery type; it is not universal.
A camera that shows no flash cannot by itself distinguish a failed IR emitter from a camera filter or a power problem.

Flash appears, but the TV does not react
- Aim the remote directly at the TV and try at close range.
- Move objects blocking the TV’s receiver. Its location varies by model; Samsung Germany says it is often at the lower right or near the center below the logo.
- Consider nearby electronic interference. Samsung Singapore includes checking obstructions and interference among its troubleshooting steps (Samsung Singapore’s troubleshooting guide).
A flash confirms transmission from the tested button, not reception by the set. If the remote is a Smart Remote and basic IR buttons work but voice or other smart controls do not, check its Bluetooth pairing.

Re-pair a Samsung Smart Remote
For the Smart Remotes covered by Samsung Germany’s instructions, turn on the TV, hold the remote about 30 cm from the set, then press and hold Return and Play/Pause together for at least three seconds. Wait for the on-screen pairing confirmation. This sequence and supported functions vary by model and market, so use the exact model manual if the combination does not work (Samsung Germany’s pairing instructions).
