How to Test Websites on Foldable Phones

A practical workflow for testing websites on folded and unfolded displays, from responsive checks in DevTools to real-device validation.
Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Test a website on a foldable in stages: check responsive widths in Chrome DevTools, exercise folded and unfolded states in DevTools or Android Emulator, then validate the most important journeys on a real foldable or real-device service. A foldable is a set of viewport and posture states—not one screen size. Check the compact exterior display, expanded interior display, orientation changes, and any book or tabletop layouts your site claims to support.

1. Check the responsive baseline in Chrome DevTools

Start with the page’s ordinary responsive behavior before testing hinge-specific layouts. In Chrome, open DevTools and turn on Device Mode. Resize the viewport across the widths relevant to your design, paying particular attention to the site’s own media-query breakpoints. DevTools documents responsive dimensions and media-query inspection in Device Mode.

  • Look for horizontal overflow, clipped content, unreadable text, and controls that are difficult to reach.
  • Check the page at widths just below and above important breakpoints, not only at a few preset device sizes.
  • Use content-driven breakpoints. A viewport reported for one phone is not a universal foldable breakpoint: available window size, browser, and user display settings can affect the usable viewport.

2. Test folded and unfolded states

Use an appropriate device option in the Chrome DevTools device toolbar to exercise continuous and folded postures, and single- and dual-screen views where the emulation supports them. For repeatable Android checks, create or select a foldable profile in Android Emulator and use its fold/unfold controls. See the Android Emulator documentation.

  1. Load the page in the compact state and check navigation, text, images, menus, and primary controls.
  2. Expand the device or switch posture while the page remains open. Check that the layout responds, important controls remain reachable, and open overlays are still usable.
  3. Repeat the check after rotating the device. Confirm that the page retains form input and that scroll position remains reasonable through a state change.
  4. Test the expanded state on its own. A wide viewport should not merely stretch a phone layout if the page needs a more useful two-pane or tablet-like arrangement.

DevTools and Android Emulator make state changes repeatable, but they simulate devices. They do not prove that every physical hinge, browser, or touch interaction will behave identically.

3. Inspect content and controls around the hinge

Where the device or browser exposes separate screen segments or a visible hinge area, inspect how content lands relative to that boundary. Pay particular attention to headings, paragraphs, images, video, dialogs, menus, and interactive controls. Avoid placing a key control or an important part of a reading line where the hinge makes it awkward to see or use.

If the design intentionally uses two panes, give each pane a clear purpose and check that the page remains understandable on a continuous screen too. Chrome’s article on foldable web APIs explains the concept of viewport segments separated by hardware features such as a fold or hinge, including CSS environment variables for segment dimensions and positions. Treat that article as design background, not evidence of universal current browser support: it describes Device Posture and Viewport Segments APIs as an origin trial in Chrome 125 through 128, with local experiments enabled by a flag.

4. Test the journeys and postures your site supports

Choose checks based on what visitors actually do. Android’s foldable app quality guidance names book and tabletop postures and asks developers to check whether UI elements move to useful positions. Translate those ideas into browser-page checks rather than treating every app-specific scenario as a web requirement.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.
  • Book-like use: check long-form reading flow and whether content or controls fall awkwardly across a pane boundary.
  • Tabletop-like use: check media playback and whether controls remain visible and accessible in the posture your layout is meant to support.
  • Core website tasks: exercise navigation, search, sign-in, forms, checkout, and interactive tools in compact and expanded states.
  • Overlays and scrolling: open menus, dialogs, and other overlays; scroll long pages; then change posture and check that the page remains usable.

Samsung’s foldable testing guidance discusses app-focused topics such as continuity, multi-active windows, and Flex mode. These can prompt useful questions about a browser page, but they are not standards or requirements for every website.

5. Choose the right level of device testing

Approach Best use Main limitation
Chrome DevTools Device Mode Fast checks of responsive dimensions, media queries, and supported posture or dual-screen emulation. Emulation does not establish real browser or device behavior, and available emulated options can change. Chrome DevTools documentation
Android Emulator Repeatable Android fold/unfold and screen-configuration checks. It remains simulated hardware. Android Emulator documentation
Physical foldable Checking browser behavior, touch, and hardware characteristics on a specific model. One device and browser combination is only one sample.
Real-device service Accessing selected real foldables without owning each target device. Device catalogs, availability, and terms vary by provider. Android points to Firebase Test Lab or similar services as options. Android foldable quality guidance

Use emulation for broad, quick iteration. For high-risk pages—such as sign-in, checkout, or a core interactive feature—validate the key journeys on physical hardware or a real-device service when practical. If foldables are significant in your audience, use your own traffic data to select target devices and browsers, and keep a small repeatable smoke-test list.

Independent reader supportYour contribution helps us test, update, and keep practical guides available for everyone.Support on Ko-Fi

Keep essential behavior independent of experimental APIs

Do not make basic site operation depend on fold-specific browser APIs. The Chrome article cited above documents an earlier origin-trial period for Device Posture and Viewport Segments; it is not a current cross-browser compatibility matrix. Make the page work at ordinary responsive widths without those APIs, then treat hinge-aware enhancements as progressive improvements and verify them in the specific browsers you support.

For a clean screenshot of a page during review or regression checks, ScreenshotNeo offers a website screenshot API and MCP server for developers. It does not replace foldable-state testing: a screenshot request is not a substitute for changing posture, trying touch interactions, or checking a physical hinge.

One GET request returns an image or PDF. For example, save a screenshot as WebP with cURL:

curl -G "https://api.screenshotneo.com/v1/shot" -d access_key=YOUR_API_KEY --data-urlencode url=https://stripe.com -o shot.webp

See the ScreenshotNeo API documentation for request options. ScreenshotNeo accepts cookie or consent banners like a visitor and removes more than 60 known consent platforms, newsletter popups, and chat widgets before capture; each step can be turned off. Bot checks, blank pages, timeouts, failed loads, and cache hits cost nothing, and response headers identify the page verdict and billing status. Its MCP server provides take_screenshot, get_page_info, and capture_pdf for Claude, Cursor, and other MCP clients. The free plan includes 1,000 screenshots per month with no card; paid plans start at $5 for 3,000.
