Playwright can capture and compare website screenshots using WebKit, the browser engine associated with Safari—but it does not automate Apple’s branded Safari app. Configure a WebKit project, create a reviewed screenshot baseline, then compare later runs in the same environment. For Safari-specific release confidence, also test in actual Safari on the supported Apple devices and operating systems.
What a Playwright “Safari” screenshot test actually tests
Playwright runs its own patched WebKit build rather than branded Safari. A passing screenshot assertion is evidence that the page rendered as expected in that WebKit setup; it does not certify a particular Safari release, every Apple device, or every Safari-specific behavior.

Playwright says its WebKit is derived from the latest WebKit main-branch sources, which can include changes before they reach Apple Safari. Its documentation describes macOS as the closest-to-Safari WebKit experience; Linux can be a less expensive CI choice. macOS WebKit is still not identical to the Safari application. For behavior that depends on Apple’s browser or operating system, add a separate check in actual Safari. Playwright browser documentation
Set up a WebKit project
Use Playwright Test and install the browser binaries for the Playwright version in your project. The following configuration creates a project named webkit using the documented desktop Safari device profile. The profile supplies device and viewport defaults; it does not change WebKit into branded Safari. Projects can also use mobile device profiles when that matches the scenario. Capture a screenshot or compare it with a baseline
One-off screenshot
For a capture without a visual assertion, launch WebKit, open a page, navigate to the target, and save the screenshot. This example can be run as a Node.js script in a project with Playwright installed:

Visual regression assertion
For repeatable checks, use Playwright Test’s toHaveScreenshot(). On its first run, the assertion writes a reference image; later runs capture the page and compare it with that reference.

Keep screenshot comparisons meaningful
Screenshot rendering can change with the host operating system, browser version, browser settings, hardware, power source, and headless mode. Playwright recommends running tests in the same environment used to generate their baselines. Differences in fonts and other platform rendering are a reason to keep separate baselines for genuinely different environments rather than compare them as though they were identical. - Pin and update the Playwright package intentionally, and keep its browser binaries aligned.
- Use the same operating system or CI image, WebKit build, headless setting, device profile, and fonts for baseline creation and comparison where possible.
- Review reference-image changes before committing them. To update snapshots intentionally, run
npx playwright test --update-snapshotsand inspect the new images rather than accepting them blindly. - Use a tolerance such as
maxDiffPixelsonly after checking why pixels differ. A broad tolerance can conceal a real regression. - If dynamic content makes a comparison unstable, the assertion supports a stylesheet option to hide selected elements. Use it only when hiding that content cannot mask a meaningful change.
Troubleshoot failed or inconsistent screenshots
The test says no WebKit project was found
Check that the project’s name in playwright.config.ts is webkit if you run --project=webkit. If you chose another name, use it in the command or rename the project.

WebKit is missing or does not match the package
Install the browser binaries for the Playwright version your project uses by running npx playwright install. Keep the package and browser installation synchronized locally and in CI; a package upgrade can require reinstalling the expected binaries. Playwright browser documentation
The screenshot differs only on CI
Record the CI runner image and operating system, Playwright version, WebKit binary version, headless or headed mode, device profile and viewport, fonts, and dynamic page state. First reproduce the failure in the environment that produced the baseline. Then determine whether the page changed or the rendering environment drifted. These checks follow from the documented sources of screenshot variation; they are a diagnostic checklist, not a Playwright requirement.

The test fails on changing content
Check for timestamps, rotating content, animations, or other page state that changes between runs. Make the test scenario stable where practical. If you hide an element using the assertion’s stylesheet option, verify that the hidden content is not part of what the test is meant to protect.

Confirm which browser and operating system actually ran. A Playwright WebKit project is useful WebKit coverage, but it is not branded Safari. For release-critical Safari behavior, run a separate validation in actual Safari on the supported OS and device combinations.

Can I use Playwright to test Safari on an iPhone?
You can configure a mobile Safari device profile for Playwright’s WebKit project, but that is still a Playwright WebKit run, not the Safari app on an iPhone.
Do screenshot baselines change when I update Playwright?
They can, because Playwright versions expect specific browser binaries and screenshot rendering is environment-sensitive. Review the differences after an intentional update before replacing committed baselines.
