You can run a 24/7 YouTube lofi stream from a DigitalOcean Droplet by sending a pre-rendered, looping video through encoder software such as FFmpeg. The VPS keeps the encoder running when your own computer is off, but reliable operation takes more than starting a process: you need streaming rights, a tested output profile, an egress budget, monitoring and a plan for YouTube’s 12-hour archive limit.
Before you start: check rights and channel eligibility
Get permission for continuous live use
Use music and visuals you created or have licensed for continuous livestreaming in the territories you intend to serve. Keep the license records and check that they cover live broadcasts; permission for one upload may not cover an always-on stream. YouTube’s live-stream terms put responsibility for the necessary worldwide rights on the person providing the content, including music rights involving artists, labels, publishers and other rights holders.

Content ID may block, track or monetize a stream, and its policy can vary by geography. A test that produces no claim does not prove you hold all required rights or guarantee that a later stream will remain claim-free. Avoid describing a track as “copyright-free” unless its actual license supports that description.
Separate permission from monetization
Having permission to use music does not guarantee YouTube Partner Program acceptance. YouTube’s reused-content policy applies to a channel as a whole. Explain the original value in your channel—such as your own compositions, artwork or meaningful sequencing—accurately, and do not assume that licensed tracks alone will qualify a channel for monetization.

Confirm the channel can go live
YouTube requires a verified channel with no live-streaming restriction in the previous 90 days, and the streamer must be at least 16. Enabling live streaming for the first time can take up to 24 hours, so complete that step before your planned launch.
How the VPS streaming setup works
Your media file is stored on the Droplet. An encoder reads and loops the file, then sends the stream to YouTube using the server URL and stream key shown in YouTube Studio. The Droplet needs enough compute resources for the chosen playback or encoding method, plus enough outbound transfer for the stream’s sustained bitrate.
Crashes, No Sound, or Screen Glitches?
Random freezes, missing sound and display glitches usually trace back to one bad driver. Find and replace yours safely.Free scan · under a minutePC Slower Than It Used to Be?

A file that can be stream-copied uses a different workload from one that must be re-encoded, and filters or higher output settings add more load. Choose a plan only after testing the actual media and settings you intend to run.
Set up the stream, step by step
1. Prepare and test your loop file
Make a complete video file that combines the intended audio and visual. Check the full file for silence, glitches, unexpected black frames and an abrupt ending before putting it on the VPS. A seamless loop depends on how the source file ends and begins; the encoder can repeat the file, but it cannot repair a bad edit.
Rank #2
For the example command below, the file must already contain compatible video and audio streams that YouTube accepts through the chosen ingest. The command copies those streams instead of re-encoding them. If your file is incompatible or needs a different output profile, configure and test an encoding workflow rather than assuming stream copy will work.
2. Create a Droplet and install an encoder
Create a Linux Droplet in DigitalOcean and transfer your media file to it. The exact resource requirements depend on whether you are copying or encoding streams, so do not treat a low-cost plan as proven sufficient. On an Ubuntu system, one way to install FFmpeg from the configured package repositories is:
sudo apt update
sudo apt install -y ffmpeg
Check that FFmpeg is available with ffmpeg -version. Keep the media and logs on the VPS, and restrict administrative access to the machine. A GUI encoder such as OBS is another possible software approach, but running a desktop application on a server may require a graphical environment and its own operational setup.
3. Create a YouTube broadcast and protect the key
- Open YouTube Studio and go to the Live Control Room.
- Create or configure a broadcast, then retrieve its ingest/server URL and stream key.
- Use the RTMPS ingest option where available. Enter the URL and key in your encoder’s configuration.
- Treat the stream key as a password. Do not publish it, put it in a public script or paste it into a support forum. If it is exposed, replace or rotate it in YouTube Studio before continuing.
The exact URL and key are assigned or displayed for your YouTube setup; copy the values shown in Studio rather than relying on a URL from an old guide.

4. Start a looping FFmpeg feed
After you have copied the server URL and key from YouTube Studio, enter them into the shell as environment variables. This interactive method avoids placing the key directly in the command line:
read -r -p "YouTube ingest URL: " INGEST_URL
read -r -s -p "YouTube stream key: " STREAM_KEY; echo
export INGEST_URL STREAM_KEY
For a compatible file at /srv/lofi/lofi-loop.mp4, this is an implementation example, not a YouTube- or DigitalOcean-validated configuration:
What’s actually slowing this PC down?
Pick the symptom - the matching free tool is one click away.
ffmpeg -stream_loop -1 -re -i /srv/lofi/lofi-loop.mp4 -c:v copy -c:a copy -f flv "${INGEST_URL}/${STREAM_KEY}"
-stream_loop -1 repeats the input indefinitely, while -re reads it at its normal playback rate. The copy options avoid re-encoding; they are appropriate only if the file’s streams and parameters work for your ingest. If the command exits or YouTube reports an unhealthy stream, inspect the FFmpeg output and YouTube stream-health display rather than assuming that the VPS plan is the only possible cause.
Keep the process running in a managed terminal session or configure a process supervisor after testing its behavior. The shell example alone stops when its session ends, and a supervisor restart is not a guarantee of a seamless viewer experience or a valid replacement YouTube session.

5. Check the live output before leaving it unattended
Start the encoder and check the YouTube Live Control Room for an incoming signal and stream health. Watch a representative test long enough to reveal resource or network problems. Monitor the encoder process, CPU and memory, outbound traffic, disk space for logs and assets, and YouTube’s stream-health indicators. YouTube also recommends testing upload bitrate and recommends using a bitrate the connection can sustain.
Choose an output profile and budget bandwidth
YouTube’s encoder guidance retrieved in 2026 recommends H.264 at 6 Mbps for 720p30 and 14 Mbps for 1080p30. For AV1 or H.265, the recommendations are 6 Mbps at 720p30 and 10 Mbps at 1080p30. These are recommendations, not a promise that every visual, encoder or viewer connection will suit that profile. Use the profile your VPS and connection can sustain, then verify stream health with representative audio and motion.
- Use constant bitrate (CBR).
- Set a two-second keyframe interval; YouTube says not to exceed four seconds.
- Use AAC or MP3 audio.
- Prefer RTMPS for secure ingest when it is available in your encoder and YouTube setup.
At a steady 6 Mbps, outbound data is about 64.8 GB per day and 1.944 TB over 30 days in decimal units, before protocol overhead. This is arithmetic from the bitrate, not a DigitalOcean plan estimate. DigitalOcean’s pricing page, checked in 2026, lists 500 GiB of monthly transfer with its $4/month 512 MiB Basic Droplet and 1,000 GiB with its $6/month 1 GiB Basic Droplet. DigitalOcean lists additional Droplet outbound transfer at $0.01/GiB; transfer is pooled at the team level. A single 6 Mbps stream can exceed the 1,000 GiB allowance, and the exact bill depends on the billing period, data-unit conversion and other team workloads. Check the current plan and account billing details before launch.
Do not choose a Droplet solely by RAM or price. Compare the encoder’s measured CPU and memory use under the intended settings with the plan resources, and compare the bitrate-derived egress with the transfer allowance. The available figures do not establish that any particular Droplet will sustain a given encode reliably.

Plan for recovery and YouTube’s archive limit
Decide whether the stream must also create VODs
YouTube automatically archives live streams that are under 12 hours. Do not expect a single continuous broadcast longer than 12 hours to create an automatic archive. If VODs matter, plan broadcasts shorter than 12 hours and decide how you will start the next session. A session transition can interrupt viewers; do not promise a gap-free handoff without a procedure you have tested.

A process supervisor or scheduled health check can restart a failed encoder, but its behavior depends on the encoder, stream key and YouTube session. Test what happens after a process crash and after a network interruption before relying on automatic restarts. Monitor the process and YouTube’s stream health, and keep enough disk space for logs. No particular instance size, restart script or configuration guarantees 24/7 uptime.
Troubleshoot common failures
- YouTube does not receive a signal: Check that the broadcast is live-ready, the ingest URL and key were copied correctly, and the encoder is still running. Replace an exposed or potentially stale key in Studio and update the encoder configuration.
- The stream appears but reports poor health: Reduce the output bitrate or resolution, verify the Droplet’s sustained outbound capacity, and confirm CBR and a two-second keyframe interval. Test again with the actual file and watch the health indicator.
- FFmpeg exits immediately: Read its error output. Confirm the input path is correct, the file can be read, and the input streams are suitable for the copy-based command. If not, prepare a compatible file or configure and test re-encoding.
- The feed stops when you disconnect: The foreground command is tied to its shell session. Run it under a tested process manager or persistent session, then separately test what happens when the encoder or network fails.
- The stream runs but no automatic archive appears: Check the broadcast duration. YouTube’s automatic archive applies to streams under 12 hours; plan shorter sessions if automatic VODs are required.
- A rights claim affects playback or monetization: Review the claim and the underlying license, including territory and live-stream rights. Content ID policy can vary by geography; a prior clean test does not establish future availability or monetization.
