Treat a store demo as a basic function check—not proof that an old mains-powered device is safe to use at home.
1. Identify the model and what should come with it
Photograph the make, model, serial number, and rating label, along with any included accessories. Use the exact model to find its manual and check for recall notices. A vague claim such as “tested” is not enough: ask what was tested and what the result was.

Compare the included items with the manual. Depending on the device, missing essentials might include a power supply, cable, remote, controller, battery cover, or required media. A plug or connector that fits does not establish that an adapter or battery is compatible.
2. Inspect it before applying power
Examine the device unplugged, including its case, covers, screws, vents, switches, knobs, ports, plug, and cord. Look for damage or signs of unsafe alteration before asking staff to turn it on.

- Do not power it if the cord is frayed or damaged, conductors are exposed, or the case is cracked or missing a cover.
- Walk away from signs of battery leakage, corrosion, or swelling. Do not try to charge a swollen or damaged battery.
- Look for scorch marks, loose parts, heavy corrosion, missing safety-critical components, or evidence of modification or poor repair.
- Do not open the device or touch internal components in the store. Do not bypass protective parts or try a random adapter to see whether it works.
Health Canada notes that used electrical products can have unknown histories, damage, recalls, or compliance issues. Singapore’s Consumer Product Safety Office also advises checking lithium-ion batteries for damage or leakage. Follow local regulator guidance for your country.
3. Ask for a demonstration of relevant functions
If the item appears undamaged and the store permits testing, ask staff to demonstrate the functions that matter for that model. A working demonstration can reveal obvious faults, but it cannot certify the device’s internal electrical safety.
For a game console
Check that it powers on and produces a stable image. If relevant, test the controllers and buttons, ports, and whether the disc drive or cartridge slot reads a game. Check network features only if you need them. PlayStation’s used-console guidance recommends seeking evidence of power-on, ports, buttons, disc-drive operation, and internet connection, and checking image quality, overheating, and visible damage.
For other devices
Use the manual to identify the functions a basic demonstration should cover—for example, controls, inputs, outputs, display, or playback. Do not improvise an electrical test if you are unsure how the model is meant to be powered or operated.

4. Verify power accessories and safety information
Check the model’s required voltage and power-supply specifications in its manual or on its rating label before buying a replacement adapter or charger. A matching connector alone does not make a power supply safe or suitable. For replacement lithium-ion batteries, verify compatibility with the exact model and buy from a trusted seller.
Safety requirements and marks differ by country. For example, Canadian guidance recommends checking for an appropriate certification mark on plug-in electrical products. Look up the exact model’s recall and safety information, and ask the seller whether it has been repaired or modified. UK product-safety guidance warns that vintage products may lack modern safety features or may no longer meet current requirements.

5. Decide whether the price and risk make sense
Before paying, check the shop’s return policy; terms vary by store. Factor in the cost of any missing compatible accessories and likely professional inspection or repair rather than assuming a low price makes the item a low-risk buy.
- Consider buying when the item is visibly intact, the included parts match the manual, and the demonstration covers the functions you need.
- Pause or walk away if it is visibly damaged, has a compromised battery, lacks a safety-critical part, or comes with an unknown power supply.
- Get expert advice first for an expensive, questionable, or old mains-powered device. A qualified repairer or electrician can assess it more reliably than a brief shop demonstration.
Consumer guidance varies by jurisdiction. The ACCC in Australia recommends asking about testing and history and considering independent expert advice for expensive electronics or known damage. Consumer Affairs Tasmania advises that second-hand electrical equipment should be undamaged and checked by a qualified repairer or licensed electrician; that is jurisdiction-specific advice, not a universal legal rule. In the United States, the CPSC explains that reseller obligations do not mean a particular used item has been tested or is safe.
