You can test two thumbnails for a 24/7 YouTube broadcast if its saved archive appears as an eligible video in YouTube Studio. Use the desktop Test & Compare feature on that archive—not on the active, continuously running broadcast. YouTube’s help pages document tests for live archives, but do not establish that every always-on setup can test its active stream.
What you can test: the archive, not the active broadcast
First identify the saved video or archive associated with your 24/7 stream. YouTube’s documentation supports testing eligible live archives. It does not document testing the thumbnail of the active continuous broadcast itself; a separate YouTube A/B-testing page also excludes scheduled live streams. If your stream has no saved archive, or runs as repeated sessions, the help pages do not settle whether your particular setup is eligible. Check the video in Studio rather than assuming it can be tested.

For the documented path, the archive must appear in Studio in an eligible public-video format. The Test & Compare help page excludes private videos, Made for Kids content, and content for mature audiences. Test & Compare is available on a computer and requires advanced features to be enabled. YouTube’s general custom-thumbnail guidance also says the account must be verified; check the current Studio eligibility notice for your account and video.

- Open YouTube Studio on a computer and select the saved live archive you want to evaluate. Confirm that it is public and that the video’s Studio page offers the test feature.
- Prepare two distinct thumbnail files. YouTube allows up to three options, so two are within the stated limit. Make the versions meaningfully different—for example, change the composition or focal point rather than making only a tiny adjustment. YouTube warns that small differences can take longer to distinguish or may not yield a clear result.
- Open the thumbnail controls. In the selected video’s details, go to the Thumbnail area and choose Test & compare. Upload the two options and start the test. If that choice is not available, the video or account may not meet the feature’s eligibility requirements.
- Use high-resolution images. YouTube recommends the highest resolution for test thumbnails. If any option is below 720p (1280 × 720), the experiment thumbnails are downscaled to 480p (854 × 480).
- Wait for the report. YouTube says results can take a few days or as long as two weeks; it does not promise a fixed completion time. The report may show Winner, Preferred, or None. If there is no clear winner, the first uploaded thumbnail remains the default under the documented behavior, and you can manually choose a thumbnail.
Understand what the result means
Test & Compare evaluates variants concurrently and bases its result on watch-time share, not click-through rate (CTR). YouTube says this is intended to select thumbnails that support creator growth. A Winner indicates a clear statistically significant result; Preferred means one option is likely better but the evidence is less certain; None means there was no strong difference. Low impressions or very similar options can make a clear outcome less likely.

CTR is still useful context, but it is not the native test’s winner criterion. YouTube cautions that third-party sequential tests can produce conflicting results when options receive exposure at different times or a tool optimizes for CTR alone. A before-and-after thumbnail change is observational, not an equivalent concurrent A/B test.
Use live analytics as context, not as a substitute for the test
In YouTube Studio Analytics, open the Content tab and filter to Live. Review impressions, impressions CTR, views, and average view duration for the relevant archive or stream. YouTube defines live impressions as thumbnail displays on YouTube, excluding external sites and apps. Impressions CTR shows how often viewers watched after seeing the thumbnail; it reflects the thumbnail, title, and stream content together. Average view duration is the average minutes watched per view under the selected date range, geography, and filters.

Read these measures as a viewer funnel: CTR can indicate appeal, views show engagement, and average view duration adds viewing context. Compare streams with the same content format. For a continuous channel, account for changes in programming, timing, or audience composition; metrics can shift across periods and viewer groups. These analytics help you understand performance, but they do not override the experiment’s watch-time-share result.
If the archive is ineligible or no clear result appears
- Test & Compare is missing: confirm you are on a computer, advanced features are enabled, and the archive is public and otherwise eligible. If there is no saved archive, the documented archive workflow does not apply.
- The test has not finished: allow for a few days and, if needed, up to two weeks. Low impressions or minor visual differences may delay or prevent a decisive result.
- The report says Preferred or None: treat that as less than a decisive win. You can keep the first uploaded option or manually select a thumbnail; avoid presenting the result as proof that one thumbnail definitively performs better.
- You changed the thumbnail manually: use subsequent CTR and average view duration as observational signals only. If timing, audience, title, or stream content also changed, you cannot isolate the thumbnail’s effect from those factors.
