Test each stream with a client that supports its protocol, then verify more than a successful connection: the entry resource must load, media must initialize, and playback must keep advancing. FFmpeg can test RTMP and RTSP; hls.js or a player with native HLS support can test HLS; and the DASH-IF dash.js player can test DASH. A successful test proves only that the chosen client and environment could play that stream at that time.
What to check in any stream test
Separate the test into stages. A connection or manifest loading is not the same as successful playback, and playback that starts is not necessarily stable.

- Record the test context. Note the protocol, full endpoint, time, client and version, browser or operating system, and any authentication requirements. Keep credentials and secret tokens out of screenshots, logs, and reports.
- Use a compatible client. A browser may lack the required media APIs or codec support even when the stream is reachable. For browser playback, test the actual browser and player combination you intend to use.
- Check the entry resource or session. For HLS, confirm the playlist loads. For DASH, confirm the MPD manifest loads. For RTMP or RTSP, confirm the client establishes a connection or session and discovers media.
- Verify ongoing playback. Confirm the playback clock advances, media continues arriving, and playback does not stall or end unexpectedly. Note errors and the point at which the test fails.
- Compare when the result is ambiguous. Try another client that supports the protocol, or another network if available. A second result helps narrow the problem but does not by itself identify its cause.
When reporting a failure, include the exact client error, response codes if available, failed resource URLs with secrets removed, whether the failure repeats, and whether another client succeeds. Origin or CDN logs can help investigate server-side behavior.

Test RTMP streams with FFmpeg
FFmpeg documents RTMP and RTMPS support. Its documented RTMP URL structure is rtmp://[username:password@]server[:port][/app][/instance][/playpath]. Check that the server, port, application path, stream name or playpath, and authentication match the streaming server configuration. A failed connection may happen before media decoding, so keep connection or authentication errors separate from codec and playback errors.

Use an FFmpeg build with the required protocol support and test the endpoint using the RTMP workflow appropriate to your setup. Record the full command and client version when sharing results, but redact embedded credentials and tokens. The FFmpeg documentation describes protocol syntax and handling; it does not establish that any particular endpoint is publicly accessible.
Test HLS streams
HLS begins with a playlist URI. RFC 8216 describes playlists that reference media segments; a master playlist may describe variant streams at different bitrates, formats, or resolutions, as well as alternate renditions. A playlist loading successfully is only the first check: verify that referenced segments load and play too. RFC 8216: HTTP Live Streaming.

Use the hls.js demo
The hls.js demo accepts a stream URL and provides playback, timeline, quality-level, error, and real-time metric views. Use those indicators to see whether the playlist loads, whether playback begins and progresses, and whether errors appear during segment retrieval or playback. The project documents the library’s compatibility requirements and API at hls.js API documentation; the demo is available at hls.js demo.

hls.js playback requires browser support for Media Source Extensions (MSE) with supported media inputs. Some platforms, including Safari platforms, may instead play HLS natively through the video element. If the demo fails, try the intended native player or a compatible browser before concluding the stream itself is broken.

Test RTSP streams with FFmpeg
FFmpeg documents RTSP support and several transport choices: UDP, TCP interleaving, and HTTP or HTTPS tunneling for some use cases. If the endpoint connects but media does not arrive, or results differ across networks, compare the documented transport options where your setup permits. Record which transport you used.
A result that changes between UDP and TCP narrows the investigation, but it does not prove whether the source, firewall, or network caused the difference. Capture the connection and playback errors separately, and compare another compatible client if needed. See the FFmpeg Protocols Documentation for RTSP options.

Test DASH streams with dash.js
Use the DASH-IF dash.js reference player or sample player and provide the MPD manifest URL. The client targets MPEG-DASH playback in browser platforms that support the relevant media APIs. The dash.js reference player and dash.js quick start describe the browser workflow.
Check that the manifest is accepted, playback starts, the timeline advances, and no critical errors occur. The dash.js functional-test guidance also covers behaviors such as buffer cleanup, manifest updates, seeking, and audio switching; those checks are useful when investigating more than basic playback. See dash.js functional tests.

Interpret the failure by where it occurs
The causes below are troubleshooting hypotheses, not diagnoses of a particular endpoint. Confirm them against actual client errors and server-side logs.
| Observed result | What to investigate next |
|---|---|
| Connection or authorization fails | Check endpoint spelling, port and path, credentials, token expiry, access rules, and reachability. For RTMP, verify the configured application and playpath as well as authentication. |
| HLS playlist or DASH manifest loads, but media segments fail | Inspect the referenced resource paths, permissions, HTTP responses, and whether the client can reach the segment URLs. |
| Resources load, but media does not initialize | Check supported container and codec combinations, player support, and playlist or manifest conformance. |
| Playback starts and then stalls | Inspect ongoing segment availability, playlist or manifest refresh, network consistency, and player buffer or error information. |
| One browser fails while another works | Compare native and MSE playback paths, codec support, and browser-specific delivery constraints before changing the stream. |
| RTSP behaves differently across transports | Record whether the test used UDP, TCP interleaving, or a documented tunneling option. The difference helps narrow troubleshooting but does not identify the fault on its own. |
Or let it run in the cloud
For a YouTube channel that needs to loop uploaded videos 24/7, StreamNeo is a separate option from testing an existing RTMP, HLS, RTSP, or DASH endpoint: it keeps a YouTube stream running from the cloud. Upload a recording or build a playlist, add your YouTube stream key, and go live. Nothing has to stay on at home; StreamNeo plays the uploaded video, not a live camera feed. It supports any uploaded quality up to 4K 60fps at one flat price per slot, and automatically recovers if YouTube drops the stream. The first day is free with no card. Monthly pricing is $9.99 per month. UPI and cards are accepted in India; card checkout is available worldwide. Learn more at StreamNeo, or start your free first day.
