How to Test Responsive Website Screenshots at iPhone 12 mini Size

A practical iPhone 12 mini responsive-testing workflow: set a 375 CSS-pixel portrait baseline, inspect in Safari, and escalate to Simulator or hardware when needed.

Use a 375 CSS-pixel-wide portrait viewport as your iPhone 12 mini layout baseline. For quick checks, use Safari’s Responsive Design Mode; for closer iOS behavior, open the page in Simulator, and validate on physical hardware if the release depends on exact device behavior. A viewport screenshot is useful, but it cannot by itself verify every effect of Safari’s browser controls, the keyboard, or real form interactions.

Set the iPhone 12 mini portrait baseline

Start with a layout width of 375 CSS pixels. The iPhone 12 Mini device descriptor in Playwright’s main-branch configuration records a 375 × 812 screen, a 375 × 629 viewport, and a 3× device scale factor. These are automation profile values, not a promise that every Safari session will show exactly 629 CSS pixels vertically. Browser chrome, the keyboard, and device-specific behavior can change the visible area. Confirm the descriptor in the Playwright version installed in your project, since the main-branch file can change.

Keep CSS viewport dimensions distinct from screenshot output pixels: the 3× scale factor affects pixel density, not the CSS width your responsive layout uses. A page intended for mobile should commonly include a viewport declaration such as:

Apple’s archived Safari viewport guidance recommends width=device-width for iOS web applications so the layout uses the device width: Apple’s viewport configuration guide.

#1 Best Overall
Apple iPhone 12 Mini, 64GB, Black - Unlocked (Renewed)
  • This phone is unlocked and compatible with any carrier of choice on GSM and CDMA networks (e.g. AT&T, T-Mobile, Sprint, Verizon, US Cellular, Cricket, Metro, Tracfone, Mint Mobile, etc.).
  • Please check with your carrier to verify compatibility.
  • When you receive the phone, insert a SIM card from a compatible carrier. Then, turn it on, connect to Wi-Fi, and follow the on screen prompts to activate service.
  • The device does not come with headphones or a SIM card. It does include a generic (Mfi certified) charging cable.
  • Tested for battery health and guaranteed to have a minimum battery capacity of 80%.

Check the page in Safari Responsive Design Mode

  1. Open the page in Safari on a Mac. Turn on the Develop menu in Safari settings if it is not already visible.
  2. Choose Develop > Enter Responsive Design Mode. Set the preview width to 375 points for the portrait layout check. Safari displays the preview size in screen points.
  3. Set the pixel ratio to 3× when checking high-density images or styles that depend on resolution. This helps reveal density-sensitive asset issues; it does not change the 375 CSS-pixel layout target.
  4. Rotate to landscape and check the layout again. Responsive behavior should be considered at both orientations, not only the portrait baseline.
  5. Keep Web Inspector open beside the preview. Check for horizontal overflow, clipped controls, navigation wrapping, poorly sized images, unreadable or awkward typography, and form fields or buttons that no longer fit.

Apple describes Responsive Design Mode as a way to test media queries and dynamic styles across screen sizes in its Responsive Design Mode documentation. Treat it as a fast layout inspection tool, not a complete on-device simulation.

Know when a preview is not enough

Use Responsive Design Mode for routine layout iteration

It is a quick way to adjust width, height, orientation, and pixel ratio while watching the page respond. Its device presets approximate device behavior, and the preview does not fully reproduce browser chrome, keyboard behavior, or every device-specific form-field interaction.

Use Simulator for closer iOS behavior

When the question concerns how a page behaves in an iOS environment, use Safari’s Open with Simulator workflow. This gives a closer inspection of iOS rendering and interaction than a responsive preview, without requiring a physical phone. It remains a simulator, so it should not be treated as proof of exact hardware behavior. WebKit documents the Safari 17 redesign and Simulator workflow in its Safari 17 overview.

Use a physical iPhone 12 mini for release-critical checks

If a release decision depends on actual device behavior—especially browser controls, the on-screen keyboard, or real form interactions—check the page on physical hardware. Access to the older model is not necessary for ordinary responsive layout iteration; it is an optional final validation step when the target behavior matters.

Choose a testing method for the question you need to answer

Method Best use Main limitation
Safari Responsive Design Mode Fast width, height, orientation, and pixel-ratio checks. Presets approximate device behavior; the preview does not fully reproduce browser chrome, keyboard behavior, or device-specific form interactions. Apple
iOS Simulator Closer inspection of iOS rendering and interaction without a physical phone. It is still a simulator; use physical hardware when exact device behavior is release-critical. WebKit
Physical iPhone 12 mini Final validation on the target hardware. Requires access to the model and is usually unnecessary for routine layout iteration.
Playwright device profile Repeatable automated screenshot configuration. A versioned browser-automation profile is not proof of complete physical Safari behavior; check the installed Playwright version. Playwright device descriptors

Automate a repeatable starting screenshot with Playwright

Playwright’s iPhone 12 Mini descriptor is a useful starting configuration for automated captures. The cited main-branch descriptor uses WebKit by default and sets mobile and touch flags alongside its dimensions and 3× scale factor. Because that file is mutable, inspect the descriptor in the version your project actually uses rather than assuming the current main-branch values apply.

In a Playwright JavaScript project, the device descriptor can be used to open the target page and save a screenshot:

Rank #4
Apple iPhone 12, 64GB, Black - Unlocked (Renewed)
  • Fully unlocked and compatible with any carrier of choice (e.g. AT&T, T-Mobile, Sprint, Verizon, US-Cellular, Cricket, Metro, etc.).
  • Inspected and guaranteed to have minimal cosmetic damage, which is not noticeable when the device is held at arm's length.
  • Successfully passed a full diagnostic test which ensures like-new functionality and removal of any prior-user personal information.
  • The device does not come with headphones or a SIM card. It does include a charging cable that may be generic.
  • Tested for battery health and guaranteed to have a minimum battery capacity of 80%.
const { chromium, devices } = require('playwright');

(async () => {
  const browser = await chromium.launch();
  const device = devices['iPhone 12 Mini'];
  const context = await browser.newContext({ ...device });
  const page = await context.newPage();

  await page.goto('https://example.com', { waitUntil: 'networkidle' });
  await page.screenshot({ path: 'iphone-12-mini.png', fullPage: true });

  await browser.close();
})();

This is an automated viewport-based check, not a guarantee that Chromium reproduces Safari. The descriptor’s browser type is WebKit by default, but the example launches Chromium; to use WebKit, replace chromium with webkit in the import and launch call. Install the matching Playwright browser for the engine you select, and verify the installed descriptor before relying on its dimensions or flags.

ScreenshotNeo accepts cookie or consent banners before capture and removes more than 60 known consent platforms, newsletter popups, and chat widgets; those steps can each be turned off. Bot checks, blank pages, timeouts, failed loads, and cache hits are not billed, and the response identifies the page verdict and billing status in headers. Its MCP server provides take_screenshot, get_page_info, and capture_pdf tools for AI agents and MCP clients. The free plan includes 1,000 screenshots per month without a card; paid plans start at $5 for 3,000 shots. ScreenshotNeo is a website screenshot API and MCP server from Yorker Media; see ScreenshotNeo. A service screenshot is useful for capturing a URL, but it does not substitute for testing Safari-specific interactions on the target device.

Troubleshoot common mismatches

  • The page looks zoomed out or laid out like a desktop site: check that the page includes a mobile viewport declaration with width=device-width.
  • The preview’s height does not match the descriptor: the 375 × 629 viewport is a Playwright profile value, not a universal Safari visible-height guarantee. Browser controls and the keyboard can change what is visible.
  • Text or images look soft in a screenshot: check the pixel-ratio setting and the density of the assets. A 3× output density and a 375 CSS-pixel layout width are different settings.
  • A form works in preview but not as expected on iPhone: test with Simulator or the physical device, since keyboard and device-specific form behavior may differ from a responsive preview.
  • The automated screenshot differs from Safari: verify the Playwright version and descriptor, and confirm which browser engine the script launches. A device profile provides repeatability, not full physical-browser equivalence.
  • Controls are cut off or the page scrolls sideways: use Web Inspector to find overflowing elements, then inspect fixed widths, long labels, images, and navigation at 375 CSS pixels.
