Set Chrome DevTools to a viewport width of 360 CSS pixels, keep the height and page state consistent, then capture either the visible screen or the full page. Inspect the image for overflow, clipped text, overlapping controls, and overlays that block the story. A DevTools screenshot is a useful first check, not proof of how the page behaves on a real phone.
Set up a repeatable 360px test in Chrome
- Open the news page in Chrome, then open DevTools.
- Turn on Device Mode and choose Responsive dimensions.
- Enter 360 for the viewport width in CSS pixels. Set a height that matches the screenshot brief, and record it. A width alone does not define the visible area.
- If you are comparing captures, record the emulated device type and device pixel ratio (DPR) too. CSS pixels determine layout width; DPR affects how CSS pixels map to screen pixels.
- Wait for the same page state each time. Keep the scroll position consistent and note whether menus, advertisements, consent banners, or subscription prompts are visible.
Chrome DevTools offers presets including 320px, 375px, and 425px, but those are tool presets—not evidence that 360px represents a particular share of Indian phones. Enter 360px directly for this test. Chrome DevTools Device Mode documentation

Choose the right screenshot mode
- Capture the visible viewport when you need evidence of what appears on screen at the current scroll position. In DevTools, select More options > Capture screenshot.
- Capture the full page when the screenshot must include content below the fold. Select More options > Capture full size screenshot.
Do not compare a viewport capture with a full-page capture as if they show the same thing. For a fair comparison, keep width, height, DPR, device type, browser and version, scroll position, page state, and capture mode consistent.
What to inspect on a narrow news page
View the capture at its native dimensions, then check whether the page remains usable—not merely whether it fits inside the image.

- Horizontal overflow: look for content extending past either edge or a page that appears wider than the viewport.
- Headlines and text: check for clipped words, awkward wrapping, or text compressed to the point that it is difficult to read.
- Navigation and controls: check whether navigation can be reached and whether buttons or links overlap one another.
- Images and video: look for media wider than the content area or cropped in a way that hides important material.
- Overlays: note whether an advertisement, consent banner, newsletter prompt, or subscription prompt obscures the story or controls.
If a layout breaks at 360px, inspect nearby widths and the breakpoints shown in DevTools. A defect that appears only at one width may be tied to a responsive breakpoint; changing several test settings at once makes the cause harder to identify.
Check the viewport metadata
A screenshot alone cannot establish which viewport metadata the page declares. Inspect the document head or run Lighthouse’s viewport audit. Its passing criteria include a viewport meta element with a content attribute containing a width= declaration. Use Playwright for repeatable automated captures

Keep browser version, viewport width and height, device settings, page state, and screenshot mode stable between the baseline and new capture. Review visual differences in context: headlines, timestamps, rotating ads, and other changing content can alter pixels without indicating a responsive-layout regression. Know what desktop emulation cannot tell you
Chrome describes Device Mode as a “first-order approximation” of how a page looks and feels on mobile. It is not an actual phone run. If the issue depends on touch behavior, browser chrome, performance, or device hardware, confirm it on a physical phone; use a phone you already have if available. Can a DevTools screenshot prove a page works on a real phone?
No. Device Mode approximates mobile behavior. Confirm on a physical phone when touch, browser chrome, performance, or hardware may affect the result.
