To test a Facebook link image, submit the page’s public URL to Meta’s Sharing Debugger, click Debug, and inspect the scraped Open Graph data and preview. After you publish a fix to the page metadata or image access, click Scrape Again to request a fresh scrape.
Run a test in Facebook Sharing Debugger
- Make sure the page and its intended image are deployed and publicly accessible to a crawler.
- Open Meta’s Sharing Debugger and enter the exact public URL you plan to share.
- Click Debug. Review the fetched page information, detected Open Graph properties, warnings, and link preview.
- Check the reported
og:imagevalue against the image you intend Facebook to show. - If you make a change, publish it before returning to the debugger and clicking Scrape Again. Inspect the refreshed data and preview.
The debugger is useful because it shows what Facebook read during its scrape; a normal browser view does not establish what the crawler fetched. Login requirements can change, so check Meta’s current tool flow if access is requested.
What to check in the scraped Open Graph data
Confirm the image URL
The og:image property should point to the intended image using a publicly accessible absolute HTTPS URL. Check the exact value reported by the debugger, not just the tag you expect to be present in your source. A typo, outdated tag, or inaccessible asset can produce a missing or unexpected preview image.
Read the warnings and preview together
Use the fetched properties and any warnings as diagnostic clues, then compare them with the displayed preview. A mismatch can reveal that Facebook fetched different metadata or an image than the one you expected. The preview reflects the scrape; it is not proof that an unpublished edit has reached the public page.

Fix a preview that is wrong or out of date
No image or the wrong image
- Inspect the debugger’s reported
og:imagevalue and correct it if it does not identify the intended asset. - Verify that the image URL is absolute, uses HTTPS, and is publicly accessible to a crawler.
- Publish the correction, then return to the debugger and select Scrape Again.
Facebook still shows an old image
A cached scrape can leave an old preview visible after a change. First publish the corrected metadata or image; then request a fresh scrape with Scrape Again and inspect the resulting preview. Do not treat an edit in a draft or local copy as a published fix.
Image dimensions and suitability
If the preview looks unsuitable, review the image itself as well as the URL and metadata. Exact current recommended or minimum dimensions are not established here; consult current official Meta guidance before relying on a specific pixel threshold.
