Test native mobile apps in layers: run fast unit tests against isolated logic, integration tests across connected components, and a focused set of UI tests for the workflows users must complete. Then add performance checks and device coverage where platform behavior, compatibility, or release risk warrants it. This approach gives developers quick feedback without treating a large, slow UI suite—or manual testing alone—as a substitute for a balanced strategy.
Build a layered test strategy
Choose the test scope that can answer each question reliably. A calculation or validation rule usually belongs in a unit test; a handoff between app components calls for an integration test; and a sign-in or purchase flow may warrant a UI test that exercises the app as a user would.

| Layer | What it checks | Typical execution | Trade-off |
|---|---|---|---|
| Unit | One small piece of logic in isolation, such as validation, formatting, or a state transition. | Usually a fast local or host-side test. | Fast feedback, but it does not prove that platform components or the full user flow work together. |
| Integration | Whether connected pieces behave correctly together, such as app code interacting with a data layer or platform framework. | Local or device-based, depending on what the test exercises. | More realistic than an isolated test, with a broader setup and more dependencies to maintain. |
| UI / end-to-end | Whether a user-visible workflow and its important outcomes work through the interface. | Typically on an Android emulator or device, or an Apple simulator or physical device. | High workflow fidelity, but slower and more susceptible to failures caused by timing, environment, or UI changes. |
Keep the largest share of routine checks at the lowest dependable layer. Add UI automation for a small set of high-value journeys rather than duplicating every logic check through the interface. Android’s fundamentals of testing Android apps describes automated testing as faster and more repeatable than manual execution, with earlier actionable feedback. Apple’s Testing documentation similarly presents a balance of fast logic tests, integration tests, and UI tests for common use cases.
Decide what to run locally and what needs a device
Fast local feedback
Run isolated logic checks frequently while developing. On Android, local unit tests can run on the host machine, so they are useful for quick iterations when the behavior does not depend on Android framework or device behavior. On Apple platforms, fast logic tests are the foundation of the test suite.

Emulator, simulator, and physical-device checks
Move a test onto an Android emulator or physical device when Android framework behavior, app launch, UI interaction, or device characteristics are part of the question. For Apple apps, include simulator and physical-device runs as appropriate. Simulators and emulators make repeatable coverage practical; physical devices are useful when the behavior depends on actual hardware or real device conditions. Neither option alone proves compatibility across every device a product supports.
Android’s official testing overview distinguishes host-side local tests from instrumented tests run on a physical device or emulator. Instrumented tests are appropriate when the app’s interaction with the Android platform is part of what must be verified.
Test native Android apps
Use Android tests according to both their scope and purpose. Google groups testing concerns around functional behavior, performance, accessibility, and compatibility, and supports checks ranging from small unit tests to end-to-end flows.

Cover rules that can be tested without launching the app or relying on device state. Examples include input validation, calculations, and transformations. These tests are useful for rapid feedback and should not be made dependent on UI setup when the behavior can be checked directly.

Use instrumented tests for platform and UI behavior
Instrumented tests run on a physical device or emulator and commonly launch and interact with the app. Use them for behavior that depends on Android framework services, navigation, rendering, or other on-device integration. Automate a few representative paths—for example, sign-in, a core create-or-edit action, purchase, or recovery from an error—based on the app’s actual risks.
Complement automation with manual navigation across relevant devices, system languages, error cases, and flows. Google provides an Android testing guide for the platform’s testing approaches.
Test native iOS apps
For iOS, Apple’s current Xcode guidance says Xcode 16 and later includes Swift Testing for Swift unit tests, while XCTest continues to support UI testing through XCUIAutomation. Check the requirements for the Xcode version used by the project before adopting a particular API.

Use XCUIAutomation for selected user workflows, and add performance tests around regions where performance matters. Organize suites with test plans and bundles; run plans from Xcode or the command line, and consider Xcode Cloud automation if it fits the team’s workflow. Apple also recommends exercising UI tests across a variety of devices and supported languages.

- Operating systems: include supported OS versions, with particular attention to versions that differ in APIs or behavior relevant to the app.
- Devices and screen sizes: cover representative form factors and layouts. Add actual devices when hardware characteristics or real-device behavior matter.
- Languages and regions: test languages the app supports, especially where text length, layout direction, or locale-specific behavior affects the interface.
- Accessibility: include accessibility checks appropriate to the app’s users and supported platform behavior.
- Critical workflows: prioritize the device configurations most important for sign-in, purchase, core tasks, and error recovery.

Automate what must be repeatable
Automated tests are well suited to checks that should run regularly and produce consistent results, such as core logic and a short list of critical user journeys. Keep UI automation focused: broad suites take longer and can fail because of timing or environment issues unrelated to the behavior being checked.
Use manual sessions to find the unexpected
Exploratory testing helps uncover awkward interactions, unusual conditions, and usability issues that scripted paths may not anticipate. It complements repeatable automation, but relying on manual regression alone makes results harder to reproduce and the workload difficult to scale.
Gather feedback from pre-release users
For Apple-platform betas, TestFlight distributes beta builds to internal and external testers and collects feedback, including screenshots, comments, and crash reports. Apple’s current TestFlight page lists up to 100 eligible internal team members and access to builds on up to 30 devices for testers; these are TestFlight service limits, not general testing recommendations, and may change. See Apple TestFlight for current details.

Run the suite in a useful development and CI cadence
- While changing code: run the relevant fast unit tests for rapid feedback.
- Before merging: run the integration checks needed for changed components and a focused set of automated critical workflows.
- On a regular CI schedule: run the broader emulator, simulator, or device coverage the team can maintain reliably.
- Before release: test supported configurations and important performance, accessibility, and compatibility concerns; use beta feedback when it suits the product.
Keep failures diagnosable. When a device-based test fails, determine whether the cause is app behavior, test setup, timing, or the environment before changing the app or weakening the assertion. A stable suite should report meaningful failures without making each run prohibitively slow.
A practical starter plan
- Identify the app’s core rules and add isolated tests around them.
- Choose a few important component boundaries and add integration checks for their contracts.
- Automate a small number of user-critical workflows on the platform’s emulator or simulator.
- Run fast checks locally and the appropriate automated suite in CI.
- Add physical-device and configuration coverage where the product’s supported audience or technical risks justify it.
- Use exploratory sessions and pre-release feedback to find issues scripted checks do not model.
