To test an n98-magerun2 command safely, first confirm the tool version and Magento platform, check the exact command’s installed-version help and current documentation, and verify that your shell is operating on the intended development store and database. Use a preview or dry-run only when that specific command documents one; the available official references do not establish a universal dry-run mode.
Confirm you have the right tool and platform
The n98-magerun2 project describes its CLI tools as supporting Magento 2, Mage-OS, and Adobe Commerce. Magento 1 uses a separate utility, n98-magerun. Check the project’s official repository README before applying instructions found for the older tool.

This distinction matters because a database reference for n98-magerun may describe Magento 1 configuration paths and commands. Those details are not evidence that the same commands, options, or configuration assumptions apply to n98-magerun2.
Check the exact command before running it
n98-magerun2 includes command families for areas such as databases, configuration, development, indexing, and system operations. A family name or general usage page does not establish what every subcommand changes. Consult the official n98-magerun2 documentation and the help output from the version installed in your project for the exact command you intend to run.
#1 Best Overall
- Identify the installed tool and version. Use the executable and version-checking method appropriate to your installation, whether it is distributed as a PHAR or through Composer. Do not assume another environment has the same version or command options.
- Read the exact command’s help and documentation. Look for what it reads, what it changes, required arguments, and any documented preview behavior. A command category alone is not enough to determine side effects.
- Confirm the project context. Check the current working directory and the Magento project you mean to use. Do not treat being in a development shell as proof that the command is pointed at development data.
Verify the target store and database
Before any command that could change data, establish which store and database the current project configuration selects. Check the environment using the project’s normal, trusted configuration practices, and confirm that it is the disposable or otherwise intended development instance. The n98-magerun2 README does not document a universal target-confirmation safeguard, so do not assume the tool will stop you from operating on the wrong environment.
- Confirm the working directory belongs to the intended Magento project.
- Confirm the configured database and environment are the development targets you expect.
- If there is any ambiguity about the target, stop and resolve it before running a state-changing command.
Use a preview only when that command documents one
Do not assume that n98-magerun2 has a global --dry-run switch or that an option documented for another command also applies to yours. The official materials cited here do not establish a dry-run or preview mode for every command. Treat preview behavior as command-specific: confirm it in the installed version’s help or the current official page for that exact command, then inspect the preview output before deciding whether to proceed.
Test on a disposable development instance
When command behavior is uncertain, try it first on a development store or database that can be reset or discarded. Review the resulting data and application behavior before repeating the operation or using the command elsewhere. This is a practical risk-reduction step, not a guarantee that the command is isolated, reversible, or safe in every setup.
