Back up your personal files while the PC is still usable: set up Windows File History to copy them to an external drive or network location, and optionally sync selected folders with Windows Backup and OneDrive. Keep Windows Recovery Drive media separate in your mind—it helps restore Windows, but it does not contain your personal files.
What to back up before an SSD fails
Start with files you cannot easily replace: documents, photos, videos, music, project folders, and other personal data. Check where they are stored. Windows Backup describes syncing common folders such as Desktop, Documents, Pictures, Videos, and Music, but do not assume it covers custom folders or files on every drive.

- Look beyond the usual user folders for files saved directly on the desktop, in custom project folders, or on another internal drive.
- Check that the destination has enough capacity for the files you intend to protect.
- Prioritize irreplaceable files first if the SSD is already behaving unreliably.
Choose a backup path
| Method | What it does | Important limitation |
|---|---|---|
| File History to an external drive | Copies personal files to separate local storage and supports restoring earlier file versions. Microsoft File History guidance | The drive must be connected for backups to update. It backs up data; it is not Windows recovery media. |
| File History to a network location | Stores personal-file backups at a configured network destination. Microsoft File History guidance | Backup access depends on the network location being available. |
| Windows Backup and OneDrive | Syncs selected folders and supported settings through a Microsoft account; files can be accessed after signing in on another PC. Microsoft Windows Backup guidance | Coverage depends on what you select and how much OneDrive storage is available. The guide lists 5 GB for a free Microsoft account; storage terms can change. |
| Windows Recovery Drive USB | Creates bootable recovery or reinstall media for Windows. Microsoft Recovery Drive guidance | It does not contain personal files, and creating it erases the USB drive. |
For a practical baseline, use File History for a separate copy of personal files and optionally add OneDrive syncing for selected folders. A Recovery Drive is a different tool: useful if Windows needs repair or reinstalling, but not a substitute for either data backup.
Crashes, No Sound, or Screen Glitches?
Random freezes, missing sound and display glitches usually trace back to one bad driver. Find and replace yours safely.Free scan · under a minutePC Slower Than It Used to Be?

- Connect an external drive, or make sure the network location you plan to use is accessible.
- Open Control Panel and go to System and Security > File History.
- Select or configure the backup destination, then turn File History on.
- Allow a backup to complete. Confirm that expected files appear at the destination.
- Keep the external drive connected regularly. If it was disconnected, reconnect it and wait for the next scheduled backup, or use File History’s Run now option in Control Panel to start a manual backup.
File History can preserve earlier versions of backed-up files, but only for files included in the backup and only when the destination has received the relevant copies. An external hard drive for PC backup is a straightforward destination; check that its capacity and connection suit your files and PC.

- Get NVMe solid state performance with up to 1050MB/s read and 1000MB/s write speeds in a portable, high-capacity drive(1) (Based on internal testing; performance may be lower depending on host device & other factors. 1MB=1,000,000 bytes.)
- Up to 3-meter drop protection and IP65 water and dust resistance mean this tough drive can take a beating(3) (Previously rated for 2-meter drop protection and IP55 rating. Now qualified for the higher, stated specs.)
- Use the handy carabiner loop to secure it to your belt loop or backpack for extra peace of mind.
- Help keep private content private with the included password protection featuring 256‐bit AES hardware encryption.(3)
- Easily manage files and automatically free up space with the SanDisk Memory Zone app.(5). Non-Operating Temperature -20°C to 85°C
Add Windows Backup and OneDrive for selected folders
- Open Windows Backup, or go to Settings > Accounts > Windows backup.
- Sign in with the Microsoft account you want to use, if prompted.
- Choose the folders and supported settings to sync.
- Check OneDrive storage and confirm the folders you selected are included.
Do not treat this as an automatic copy of every file on the computer. The Windows Backup guide describes common user folders and supported settings; files in custom locations or on other drives may not be covered unless included by the feature. Microsoft’s current guidance lists 5 GB of OneDrive storage with a free Microsoft account, so check available space against the folders you select.
Create Windows recovery media separately
- Connect an empty USB drive. Creating recovery media erases its existing contents, so copy anything important off it first.
- In Windows, search for Create a recovery drive and open the utility.
- Follow the on-screen instructions to create the drive, then store it somewhere you can find it if Windows will not start.
Microsoft says the Recovery Drive utility backs up essential system files needed to restore a PC to its original state; it does not include personal files. Microsoft recommends recreating the recovery drive annually. See Microsoft’s Recovery Drive instructions.

Check that you can restore what matters
A backup is useful only if the files are present and accessible. Open the destination and confirm that important folders and recent files appear. Where feasible, restore a sample file to a different location and open it. This is a prudent check, not a Microsoft-prescribed universal test schedule.
- For File History, check that the destination is current and that the file versions you expect are available.
- For OneDrive, confirm the selected folders are syncing and that the files appear in the account.
- Keep at least one copy separate from the PC’s internal SSD so that an SSD failure does not take out the only copy.
If the SSD already seems to be failing
Copy the most valuable and irreplaceable files first while the drive remains readable. Avoid relying on undelete or recovery software instead of making a backup. Microsoft warns that recovery may fail if SSD free space has been overwritten: “It’s possible that the free space was overwritten, especially on a solid-state drive (SSD).” Microsoft Windows File Recovery guidance does not guarantee a successful recovery. If the device is unstable and the data is valuable, consider professional help rather than repeatedly using the drive.

If you later need to recover or reinstall Windows, read each on-screen warning before choosing an option: some recovery actions can cause data loss, and available options vary by Windows version. Microsoft lists point-in-time restore for Windows 11 version 24H2 or later, and documents System Restore and reinstall options for Windows 10 and Windows 11. Review Microsoft’s Windows recovery options for your version before proceeding.

Microsoft states that support for Windows 10 ended on October 14, 2025. That does not mean Windows 10 PCs stop working, but support status is relevant when planning what to do with an older PC after an SSD replacement. Microsoft Windows Backup guidance and Microsoft’s PC migration guidance provide additional details.
