Use Microsoft Entra’s branding preview for a quick review of theme styling, then validate CSS and the real sign-in experience in a test tenant before changing production. The preview shows only the sign-in page and does not display custom text overrides, so it is not an end-to-end test.
Choose the right branding path first
Microsoft Entra offers tenant-wide company branding and branding themes that can be assigned to selected applications. The distinction affects both the scope of a change and how you should test it.

Check permissions, licensing, and CSS eligibility
Before preparing a test, confirm the administrator roles and tenant entitlements. Microsoft lists the Organizational Branding Administrator role and qualifying licensing such as Microsoft Entra ID P1 or P2, Microsoft 365 Business Standard, or SharePoint Plan 1 for company branding. Applying a theme to target applications also requires Application Administrator permissions. Verify current requirements for your tenant in the official documentation.

If your change uses custom CSS, check whether the tenant is eligible before planning around it. Microsoft documents that tenants created after January 5, 2026 do not have custom CSS for company branding. After July 21, 2026, qualifying older tenants that do not already use CSS cannot newly configure it. Microsoft also describes retirement of layout and positioning properties and eventual CSS retirement; consult the current CSS reference for the applicable policy.
Preview a branding theme in the admin center
- Open the Microsoft Entra admin center and go to the company branding workflow.
- Choose the branding theme you intend to review, or begin configuring one, and use the Preview control.
- Inspect the displayed layout and styling. Treat this as a visual review of the sign-in page, not as confirmation that every page or authentication step will render as expected.
- Review the theme configuration and target applications separately before creating or applying it.
Microsoft says the live preview covers style and layout, shows only the sign-in page, and omits custom text overrides. Text changes therefore need a separate review, and the relevant sign-in flow must be checked independently. See Microsoft’s theme customization guidance for the current workflow.

Validate CSS and the rendered experience in a test tenant
For CSS changes, Microsoft explicitly recommends applying the changes in a test tenant first to validate visual impact before updating production. A preview cannot substitute for this check, and Microsoft does not describe it as a complete simulation of applications, sign-in paths, browsers, or devices.

- Open the actual target application and exercise a representative sign-in flow using appropriate test accounts.
- Review the rendered sign-in experience and any custom text in the context where users will encounter it.
- Check representative browser and user conditions relevant to your organization; do not infer their behavior from the admin-center preview.
- Once the test review is acceptable, apply the corresponding production change using your normal change-control process.

Common testing mistakes
- Using preview as sign-off: It displays only the sign-in page and excludes custom text overrides. Review text and the relevant flow separately.
- Testing only default branding when changing a theme: Themes can target selected applications, so check the applications to which the theme will be assigned.
- Assuming CSS is available: Tenant creation date and existing CSS configuration affect eligibility. Check Microsoft’s current policy before spending time on a CSS test plan.
- Skipping the test tenant: Microsoft recommends validating CSS visual impact there before production changes.
- Assuming every unspecified theme property is blank: Unspecified properties fall back to default branding; assess the resulting combination.
