Test the title visitors and crawlers actually receive, including the shared suffix—not the shorter title string stored in a page’s data. In Daniel Pertu’s 2026 example, the root layout appends | Notifio, a 10-character suffix. A 58-character authored title therefore renders as 68 characters, exceeding the project’s configured 60-character budget.
Why the authored title is not the whole title
A page title can be assembled from more than one place. In Pertu’s example, page titles supply the page-specific text, while the root layout adds | Notifio. Checking only the page-specific value misses the characters added later in the rendering pipeline.

The test should model that final assembly. If a title budget is 60 characters and the suffix takes 10, the page-specific portion can use at most 50 characters if the goal is to stay within that budget. More generally, the check is:

Then compare the rendered title—not either input on its own—with the configured limit. This catches regressions where a title is acceptable in isolation but too long after the layout applies its template.

Derive the suffix from the layout, and fail if the template changes
One option is to copy the suffix into the test as a constant. That is simple, but it creates a second source of truth: if the layout changes and the test constant does not, the test measures a title the site no longer renders.
Pertu’s example instead reads the layout and extracts the suffix from its title template. Because this relies on parsing source text with a regular expression, the test first checks that the expected template exists and contains %s, the placeholder for the page-specific title. If the layout no longer matches the expected structure, the test fails visibly instead of silently calculating a misleading result.
| Approach | Benefit | Risk or condition |
|---|---|---|
| Hard-code the suffix in the test | Simple to read and implement. | The test value can become stale when the layout changes. |
| Read and validate the layout template | Keeps the measured suffix tied to the code that applies it. | Source parsing is structure-dependent; assert the expected template and placeholder are present, and update the parser if the layout format changes. |
Source parsing is not automatically the right choice for every project. The useful principle is to avoid quietly testing an assumption: either keep the test constant synchronized deliberately, or derive the value and explicitly reject layouts the test does not understand.

Use a budget as a project check, not a universal display guarantee
The example sets TITLE_MAX = 60 and DESCRIPTION_MAX = 160. These are its configured limits and approximate working assumptions about search-result truncation, not guaranteed cutoffs across all search engines, devices, or result layouts. Character count alone also does not establish how a result will appear.
Use such limits consistently as a maintainability check: they can flag unusually long metadata before it ships. Do not treat a passing test as proof of a particular ranking, click-through rate, or display outcome; Pertu’s article reports no controlled SEO performance results.
Check every place the site gets metadata
A reliable test needs to cover each source of page metadata. Pertu’s example has data-backed alert, comparison, audience, and guide pages, as well as static metadata declared in page.tsx files. Those sources require different discovery strategies.

Iterate over data-backed pages
For each metadata collection, test every entry and assert that the collection is nonempty. Without the second assertion, an empty collection runs zero checks and can still leave the test suite green.
In the described project, dynamic route files are skipped during the static page walk because their metadata is checked through the corresponding collections. That avoids relying on two separate discovery paths for the same entries; it is appropriate only where the collection coverage is complete.
Inspect static page declarations
For static page.tsx files, the example walks the app directory, skips API routes, and reads literal metadata fields. Its parser accepts simple string literals, including strings split across lines. It requires titles, and an unparseable title is a failure rather than a reason to skip the page.

A description can be absent from an individual page when it inherits one from the layout. The test therefore should not treat every missing page-level description as an error; it needs to account for the project’s inheritance rules.
Make discovery failures visible
The example also guards against a test that finds nothing. It asserts that the static walk found at least ten pages, and that each data collection contains entries. These checks are specific to the site described, not universal minimums: set equivalent expectations for the routes and content your own project should contain.
The author’s reported resolver issue involved extensionless re-exports from an alerts barrel. The workaround was to import site files by globbing a directory; this also made newly added market files discoverable. The three files named in that project were uk.ts, netherlands.ts, and europe.ts. Resolver behavior depends on a project’s setup, so this should not be assumed to apply unchanged elsewhere.

What the example’s results do—and do not—show
Daniel Pertu reported 21 tests passing, none failing, in 101.5 ms in 2026. The same project’s longest rendered title was 59 characters, its longest description was 158 characters, and its median title headroom was six characters after accounting for the suffix. These are figures reported for that site and test run, not independent benchmarks or guarantees about other projects.
Among the rendered examples were “WG-Gesucht Alerts – Be in the First Five Messages | Notifio” at 59 characters and “Rental Scams: The Signals That a Listing Is Fake | Notifio” at 58 characters. Including the suffix in those counts is the point: measuring only the authored portion would not describe the string produced by the layout.
Quick Recap
A practical checklist for your own test
- Measure the fully assembled title after the shared template is applied.
- Choose deliberately between a synchronized test constant and deriving the suffix from the layout.
- If parsing source, assert that the expected template structure and placeholder are present.
- Cover every metadata source, including data collections and static page declarations.
- Fail on missing or unparseable required titles rather than skipping them.
- Account for inherited descriptions instead of requiring a page-level value everywhere.
- Assert that discovery found expected entries and pages, so an empty loop cannot pass unnoticed.
- Treat character budgets as project guardrails, not universal search-result display rules.
