Googlebook lets you use its Home screen as a working desktop: add widgets, apps, and file folders, arrange them across pages, and use a built-in shortcut helper to discover or customize keyboard commands. You can also create a widget from a prompt if the feature is available in your region and language.
What the Googlebook desktop can do
The Home screen combines glanceable information with ways to launch and organize work. Widgets are suited to information or quick interactions; apps, groups, and file folders help you reach and organize items. Keyboard shortcuts provide another route to common actions without navigating the screen.

Add a widget
- Right-click an empty area of the Home screen.
- Select Browse widgets, choose a widget, then select Add.
- Drag the widget to the position you want.
Add apps and make app groups
To put an app on the Home screen, drag it from All apps, or right-click it and choose Add to Home screen. To add an app to the Taskbar, use its context menu or drag it there.

Group apps by dragging one app onto another. Open the group and select its current title to rename it.
Create folders for files and move items
Right-click an empty area of the Home screen and choose New folder to create a file folder. Apps, folders, and widgets can be moved within a page or between Home screen pages; drag an item toward the left or right edge to move it to another page. Use an item’s context menu and select Remove to take it off the Home screen. An empty page is removed automatically.

Files and apps cannot be combined in the same group or folder. This separation matters when deciding whether to organize a set of shortcuts as an app group or keep documents together in a file folder.
How to find and customize Googlebook keyboard shortcuts
Press Google G + / to open the shortcut helper. You can also open it through Settings > Device & accessories > Keyboard > Physical keyboards > View keyboard shortcuts. The helper lists shortcuts by task and lets you add, edit, delete, or reset bindings, as well as fix shortcuts.

Examples from Google’s shortcut list include:
- Google G + H: go to Home.
- Google G + Tab: view open apps.
- Google G + S: take a full-screen screenshot.
- Google G + [ or Google G + ]: tile a window.
- Google G + Alt + 1–4: switch windowing workspaces.
- Google G + W: close a window.
Shortcut assignments can change as software and settings change, so use the helper to confirm a current mapping or resolve a conflict rather than assuming a key combination is universal.

Google describes Create My Widget as a way to customize the Googlebook Home screen with content using AI. To start, right-click an empty Home screen area, select Browse widgets, then choose Create. Choose a suggested category or describe what you want; examples include a countdown to a trip, the next soccer game, or upcoming flight status.

Review the preview before adding the result. You can inspect style options and describe changes to the content or colors. Resize a widget with its handles. To change an existing widget, right-click it and choose Settings. If you remove one by mistake, Google says Undo is available for five seconds.

Choosing a layout without clutter
Start with items that answer a real glance-or-launch need. A compact widget may be enough when you only need a quick update; use a larger widget when its expanded view provides useful lists, timelines, or detail. Keep apps together when they belong to the same task, and use file folders for documents rather than mixing them with app shortcuts.
You can also leave the Home screen bare if you prefer. In a short early-use report published October 6, 2026, Chrome Unboxed author Robby Payne described trying agenda, Clock, Gemini prompt, and Weather widgets, along with categorized app and file folders on a Lenovo Googlebook 15. Those are one writer’s observations during the first 24 hours with launch devices, not an official list of widgets guaranteed on every device or account. Google’s Help Center documents the workflows, but does not establish measured productivity gains from using them.
