To capture a Cypress screenshot after cookie consent, first establish the intended consent state, wait for the application to show that state, and then call cy.screenshot(). Click the real accept control when testing the consent flow; seed the application’s actual consent storage when a different test only needs a returning-visitor view.
Choose the right test: acceptance flow or accepted-state fixture
These are different tests. A functional consent test proves that a visitor can accept cookies and that the application records the preference. A screenshot fixture for an unrelated page test can start with consent already set. Do not use seeded state as a substitute for testing the real interaction.

Test the actual accept interaction
Use selectors and storage values from your application. The names below are illustrative, not universal consent-banner selectors or cookie values:

Cypress documents cookie access, but the correct storage mechanism depends on the application. See Cypress cy.getCookie() and Cypress cy.getCookies().
Seed consent for a test that does not cover the interaction
Cypress’s FAQ gives cy.setCookie('cookieConsent', 'accepted') as an example of preparing consent state. Set the real cookie for your app before visiting the page, then assert that the banner is absent:

Before cy.visit(), the browser is still on about:blank; a cookie command that needs a hostname may otherwise use the Cypress spec hostname, often localhost. Specify the application domain where necessary. See Cypress’s FAQ and its cookie command documentation.
Make consent setup repeatable under test isolation
With Cypress test isolation enabled, cookies, localStorage, and sessionStorage are cleared before each test. Set up consent in every test that relies on it; do not assume an earlier test’s acceptance will carry over.

Disabling test isolation just to preserve consent can make tests affect one another. If you intentionally reuse browser state, cy.session() can cache and restore cookies and web storage. Under test isolation, session restoration clears the page, so visit the page afterward before interacting with it. See Cypress cy.session() and Cypress cy.clearAllCookies().
Capture only after the intended state is observable
cy.screenshot('name') saves a named image in the configured screenshots folder; by default, that is cypress/screenshots. Cypress supports viewport, full-page, and runner captures. Screenshot capture is asynchronous, so queueing the command is not proof that the application was ready. Put retryable assertions first, such as checking that the banner is absent and that the expected consent state is stored. Refer to the Cypress cy.screenshot() reference for command options.
If the banner disappears before an animation completes or the page continues rendering afterward, assert an application state that indicates the page has reached the checkpoint you want. Avoid capturing while content is still changing.
Use visual comparison when the goal is regression detection
cy.screenshot() captures an image; it does not compare that image with an approved baseline. For visual regression, add a comparison workflow or integration and review the baseline. Cypress’s visual testing guide names integrations including Percy by BrowserStack and recommends a stable rendering environment, fixed viewport, controlled network responses, and deliberate checkpoints. An element-level snapshot can avoid unrelated changes elsewhere on a full page.

A useful suite separates two checkpoints: a functional test that exercises acceptance and verifies persistence, and visual captures for intentional states such as first visit with the banner visible and returning visit with it hidden.
Troubleshooting
- The banner reappears in another test: test isolation clears cookies and web storage before each test. Set the accepted state again in that test, or intentionally use
cy.session()and visit the page after restoring it. - The seeded cookie has no effect: verify the app’s actual consent key, value, domain, and storage mechanism. If Cypress sets the cookie before the app visit, specify the app domain when the default spec hostname is wrong.
- The screenshot still includes the banner: assert that the banner is absent after clicking or seeding consent, and only then queue
cy.screenshot(). Check that the application is reading the same state your test sets. - The image changes between runs: use a consistent viewport and rendering environment, control network responses, and choose a checkpoint after the page stops changing. Consider an element-level snapshot if unrelated page regions cause noise.
- The test passes but visual changes go unnoticed: Cypress’s built-in screenshot command does not perform baseline comparison. Add a visual comparison integration and maintain its approved baseline.
