Send test messages to an isolated capture inbox, not to real recipients. Then inspect each captured message and assert that the application produced the intended recipients, subject, body, and attachments. This keeps routine CI runs from contacting customers while still testing the email your software actually generates.
What a low-risk email fixture should do
A useful email fixture exercises the application’s normal mail-building path but routes delivery to a sink that captures messages instead of forwarding them. The test can then inspect the result without contacting real users. Ethereal says its messages are not delivered, and Mailtrap says Sandbox messages go to a virtual inbox rather than real recipients: Ethereal and Mailtrap.

Choose a capture service your application can reach through its existing mail transport. SMTP-compatible sinks usually let you change the test endpoint without replacing application mail code; Mailpit also accepts messages through an HTTP API. See Mailpit documentation.
Build a deterministic CI workflow
- Separate test and production mail settings. In CI, configure the application to use the capture service or an explicitly designated sandbox endpoint. Mailtrap recommends using the Sandbox API’s distinct base URL to distinguish sandbox traffic from live sending: Mailtrap CI/CD guidance.
- Give each test a recognizable identity. Use a unique recipient address and subject token for the test, trigger the application action, and query the capture inbox for that message. This makes it easier to match a captured message to the test that produced it.
- Wait for asynchronous delivery reliably. SMTP delivery may complete after the application action returns. Poll for the expected message with a bounded timeout instead of relying on a fixed sleep; a MailHog CI guide suggests a 500 ms wait, but that interval is not a guarantee across runners or environments. See MailHog CI usage.
- Assert the message’s meaning. Check the intended To, CC, and BCC fields, subject, rendered text and HTML, and attachment names or content types where relevant. A message appearing in the inbox is not enough if it went to the wrong address or contains incorrect content.
- Keep runs independent. Use a dedicated CI inbox and clear or isolate messages between runs so stale messages cannot satisfy a new test. Store hosted-service credentials in CI secret storage rather than committing them in test configuration. MailHog’s CI guidance covers inbox handling and credentials: MailHog CI usage.
- Exercise failure behavior when needed. If the application must handle SMTP errors correctly, test that path deliberately. Mailpit documents a Chaos feature for exercising behavior when SMTP responses are unexpected: Mailpit documentation.
Choose a capture setup that fits your CI environment
| Approach | What the documented options provide | What to plan for |
|---|---|---|
| Local or self-hosted capture | Mailpit accepts SMTP and HTTP API messages and provides integration-testing features. MailHog documents a web UI and JSON API. Mailpit; MailHog. | Your team operates the service in the test environment. Decide how each runner gets an isolated instance, how it starts and stops, and who can access its messages. |
| Hosted sandbox | Ethereal and Mailtrap provide capture and preview workflows; Mailtrap documents staging and CI use. Ethereal; Mailtrap. | Review the current retention, access, privacy, account, and credential requirements before sending fixture content. The cited product pages do not establish a uniform, directly comparable policy across providers. |
Compare options against the needs of your pipeline: whether delivery is isolated, whether local or hosted operation suits the team, whether SMTP or an API fits the application, how messages can be queried and cleared, whether failure simulation is useful, and what data-handling and credential controls are required. Product features and policies can change, so confirm current terms and configuration before adoption.

- Compact & Travel-Friendly: The ultra-compact design allows the adapter to stay plugged into your device without blocking adjacent ports or adding bulk, reducing wear and tear on your original USB ports.
- 12-Month Warranty: Backed by a 12-month manufacturer warranty for peace of mind. Designed to meet strict quality control standards for reliable everyday performance.
Keep the capture service from becoming a delivery path
Mailpit’s sending documentation says SMTP is available by default on port 1025 without encryption or authentication; TLS/STARTTLS and authentication can be configured. Keep a development or CI capture service off untrusted networks unless it is appropriately secured. Mailpit says dedicated authentication for its send API is supported starting in v1.26.0, so confirm behavior against the version you deploy: Mailpit documentation.
MailHog can optionally release messages to real SMTP servers. For a low-risk fixture, keep that capability disabled or inaccessible; any deliberate real-delivery test should be separate and controlled. See MailHog project documentation.

Use Ethereal with any SMTP-capable mail client
Ethereal is not limited to Nodemailer: its FAQ says it works with any mail client or library that supports SMTP. That makes it an option when the application already uses an SMTP-compatible transport. Check the service’s current setup and account requirements before relying on it in a pipeline: Ethereal.
