For a quick check, look at the cellular bars in your phone’s status bar. Android phones may also show a numerical signal reading in dBm, depending on the device and software; there is no universally available dBm screen or verified one-size-fits-all Field Test Mode route for iPhone. If reception is poor, use the troubleshooting steps below to separate a weak local signal from a SIM, settings, account, or carrier problem.
What your phone’s signal indicators tell you
Bars provide an at-a-glance indication of cellular reception, but they are not a standardized scale: neither Apple nor Google’s cited consumer guidance maps a particular number of bars to a specific dBm value. A network label such as LTE or 5G identifies a cellular technology, not how strong its signal is.

Read the status-bar bars
Look at the cellular bars in the status bar. Apple describes them as an indicator of cellular signal strength, but does not provide a conversion from bars to dBm.

Do not rely on an unverified Field Test Mode route
Field Test Mode instructions can depend on the iPhone model, iOS version, or carrier. Apple’s cited guidance does not establish a universal current menu path or screen name, so a dial code or set of steps found online may not apply to your phone. Do not treat an LTE or 5G label as a substitute for a signal reading.
Check signal strength on an Android phone
Start with the status bar
Check the signal bars. To inspect the cellular data indicator, turn Wi-Fi off: Google notes that the 2G, 3G, 4G, or H indicator may be hidden while Wi-Fi is active. If you see no signal or data indicator, try another area or go outdoors. Google’s Android troubleshooting guidance

Look for a numerical reading if your phone offers one
Some Android phones expose signal details in their settings, but the location and availability vary by manufacturer, phone, and Android version. On Pixel phones, the mobile network settings are under Settings > Network & internet > SIMs; that path does not guarantee that a dBm value appears there. Do not use one dBm cutoff as a guarantee of good or bad service. The cited API documentation does not specify a universal consumer threshold, and a reading is meaningful only in the context of the radio technology and conditions.
Compare readings without overinterpreting them
- For a practical comparison, use the same phone and SIM in the same place and note whether the reading changes. This helps you compare conditions; it is not a controlled signal test.
- On Dual SIM phones, make sure you are looking at the intended line. On iPhone, the two bars rows correspond to the data line and the other line.
- Treat bars as a quick visual check and dBm as a numerical reading where available. Neither alone diagnoses an account problem, carrier outage, or call-quality issue.
Troubleshoot weak or missing cellular service
Few bars suggest limited reception; “No Service” or “Searching” on iPhone means the phone is not connected to a cellular network, according to Apple. The next steps should check the line and connection as well as the location.

When to contact your carrier
Contact your mobile provider if the phone repeatedly has no signal or unreliable service after checking the line, refreshing the connection, and trying another location. The carrier can check your account, local coverage, and outages—factors a bars display or dBm reading cannot resolve on its own.
