How to Set Up a Samsung Galaxy SmartTag and Share Its Location

Pair a Galaxy SmartTag in SmartThings, view its reported location, and learn Samsung’s documented sharing steps for SmartTag2.
Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

To set up a Samsung Galaxy SmartTag, press its button and follow the prompts in the SmartThings app. You can view its location from the tag’s map screen. Samsung’s published sharing steps are specifically for SmartTag2: in SmartThings, go to Life → Find → More → Share this device’s location and follow the prompts to invite people.

Before you start

  • Install and open the SmartThings app, and sign in to a Samsung account. Samsung says a Samsung account is required for SmartThings Find: Use SmartThings Find with the SmartThings app.
  • Keep the tag close to your phone while adding it. The available prompts and menu labels can vary by tag generation, region, and app version.

Set up an original Galaxy SmartTag or SmartTag+

  1. Press the button on the tag to activate it.
  2. When SmartThings displays a setup prompt, follow the on-screen instructions.
  3. Choose a location and room when prompted, then complete setup. Samsung’s US instructions cover the original SmartTag and SmartTag+: Use the Samsung Galaxy SmartTag and SmartTag+.

If the setup prompt does not appear

Samsung UK documents this manual route: SmartThings → Devices → Add → Add device → By brand → Samsung → Tag/Tracker → Galaxy SmartTag. Select the tag and follow the on-screen prompts. Menu wording may differ in your version of the app. See Samsung’s SmartTag and SmartTag+ setup instructions.

Find the tag in SmartThings

  1. Open SmartThings and select the tag from your devices.
  2. Open its map or map-view control to see the reported location.
  3. Use the available finding control for the situation. Samsung documents Search Nearby for help following signal strength, Navigate for directions, and Ring to make a nearby original SmartTag or SmartTag+ emit a sound. Features and labels depend on the model and app version.

Samsung’s SmartTag2 support page also describes map finding, navigation, and options for found-item and left-behind notifications. See How to Find a SmartTag2 with SmartThings.

Share a SmartTag2’s location

  1. In SmartThings, open Life → Find.
  2. Tap More, then choose Share this device’s location.
  3. Follow the on-screen instructions to invite other users.

Samsung says invited users can help locate the SmartTag2 on their devices. Its published route is for SmartTag2; the cited instructions do not confirm that every SmartTag generation or app version offers the same sharing controls. If the option is missing, check the tag model and the labels available in your current SmartThings app rather than assuming another generation has identical sharing behavior.

What a SmartTag location can tell you

A map pin is an approximate location when the tag is detected, not proof of continuous GPS tracking. Samsung explains that nearby Galaxy devices can detect a tag’s signal and send its location to the SmartThings server through the Galaxy Find Network: How do I find my Samsung SmartTag?

This network can help report a tag when it is beyond your phone’s direct range, but an update depends on a participating Galaxy device detecting it. If the battery is depleted or no such device detects the tag, the location may be stale or unavailable.

Battery details depend on the model

Samsung’s US instructions specify a CR2032 battery for the original SmartTag and SmartTag+. They describe battery life as dependent on usage and other factors, with about a year as an estimate; this is not a SmartTag2 specification. Samsung Gulf’s support page reports up to 300 days for the SmartTag model covered there, on a page last updated June 9, 2026. Do not apply either battery figure or the CR2032 specification to SmartTag2 without checking a model-specific Samsung source. Before buying a replacement, verify compatibility with the exact tag model.
