Represent each move as a serializable action, then replay the ordered actions through your game’s reducer from a known starting state. Assert important intermediate states as well as the final state: if a replay fails, the first incorrect move prefix points to the transition that needs investigation.
What a replayable move log should contain
A move log is an ordered sequence of actions that can be applied again to reconstruct game state. Redux describes actions as objects that can be logged, serialized, stored, and replayed (Redux Fundamentals: Concepts and Data Flow).

Give each action the information the reducer needs to decide a transition—for example, a move type, the player making it, and the move’s arguments. Keep the format serializable so a failing sequence can be saved and used again. The exact fields depend on your game; the log is not a universal board-game notation.

For a replay to reproduce the same result, the reducer should calculate its return value from its state and action arguments. Redux’s Style Guide says reducers should only depend on those arguments and calculate and return a new state from them (Redux Style Guide). It specifically cautions against generating random values, using the current time, or doing asynchronous work inside reducers.

- EXPLORE THE ISLAND OF CATAN: Settle the uninhabited island of Catan by gathering resources, building infrastructure, and nurturing trade relationships.
- STRATEGY AND COMPETITION: Compete with 2-3 opponents to expand your settlements and cities while managing resources and avoiding the robber.
- TRADE, BUILD, AND SETTLE: Use brick, wood, wheat, ore, and sheep to construct roads, settlements, and cities in your race to 10 victory points.
- REPLAYABLE AND ENGAGING: With a modular hexagonal board, no two games are the same, offering endless strategic opportunities and replayability.
- FOR FAMILIES AND STRATEGY ENTHUSIASTS: Designed for 3-4 players, ages 10 and up, CATAN 6th Edition is perfect for family game nights and friendly competition. Add the CATAN 5-6 Player Extension (sold separately) to expand your game to 5-6 players.
If a rule needs randomness or a time value, make that input explicit in the action or handle it outside the reducer. Then the log contains what is needed to reproduce the transition instead of relying on an invisible external input.
Build a replay test
- Choose a known initial state. Use a small fixture that makes the relevant rule easy to understand.
- Write a short ordered move log. Target one rule or edge case at a time, with each action carrying its required arguments.
- Run the production reducer. Apply the actions in order rather than rebuilding the rule in test-only code.
- Assert selected intermediate states and the final state. Check the transitions that matter to the case, not only the ending snapshot.
- Save any failing log. Retain it as a regression test so future changes must reproduce and pass the same sequence.
A focused reducer test calls the reducer with a state and an action and checks the resulting state. Redux recommends integration tests by default, while noting reducer-focused tests can help with complex logic (Redux: Writing Tests).

- 🎲 Roll and Race – It's simple: roll a die and move your racer that many spaces.
- 💥 Break the Game – The twist is that every racer has ridiculous powers that break the game in hilarious ways.
- 🏃 Bursting with Stuff – Comes with 36 racers in the box, a double sided board with two tracks, and more!
- 🏡 Fast and Fun – Learn to play in 5 minutes, takes 20 minutes to play, and works for groups of 2-6.
Locate the first bad transition
When a long replay ends in the wrong state, apply prefixes of the log and find the earliest prefix whose result is incorrect. For example, if actions 1 through 8 produce expected states but adding action 9 causes the first mismatch, investigate that transition and the assumptions it uses. Redux documents inspecting action history to find the first action after which state is wrong (Redux Fundamentals: Concepts and Data Flow).
Do these 3 things before closing this tab:
1Clear out junk files and repair common Windows errors2Fix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitches3Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problemsKeep the original failing sequence intact while narrowing it. Short targeted logs isolate a rule; longer realistic logs are useful for interactions across turns and rules. Once the cause is fixed, preserve the smallest sequence that still reproduces the bug when practical.

- TILE PLACEMENT & MOSAIC ART: Select tiles from shared factory displays, complete pattern rows, and build your stunning mosaic wall. Every placement decision shapes your score and your board
- BOARD GAMES FOR ADULTS & FAMILIES: Easy rules get you playing in minutes, yet deep tile placement strategy and draft & deny mechanics create satisfying complexity for experienced adult board gamers
- PERFECT BOARD GAME FOR TWO ADULTS: Azul shines in head-to-head 2-player duels and scales brilliantly to 3 or 4 players. New tile combinations each round make every game a fresh, replayable challenge
- GREAT GIFT ADULT BOARD GAME: Designed for 2-4 players ages 8 and up, 30-45 minutes playtime. Azul is consistently a top-rated mosaic board game worthy of any collection, family game night at home, road trips, vacations or gifts
Check replay consistency
Replay the same initial state and log more than once, then compare the results. If they differ, look for mutation, hidden state, randomness, time, or another external input that affects reducer execution. Purity makes repeated evaluation predictable; it also makes saved logs useful for debugging rather than merely descriptive history.
Choose the right test scope
| Test scope | What it checks | Best use |
|---|---|---|
| Direct reducer test | A specific state-and-action transition and its returned state. | Complex rule logic or a failure where pinpoint state assertions are valuable. |
| Integration test | Connected application behavior closer to what a user experiences. | Confidence that components work together; Redux recommends this as the default testing approach. |
| Short replay log | A targeted rule or edge case with few transitions. | Isolating the move that causes a failure. |
| Longer replay log | Interactions among moves, turns, and rules over a sequence. | Testing realistic combinations after focused cases are covered. |
These scopes complement each other: direct reducer tests make a transition easier to diagnose, while integration tests check behavior across connected parts of the application. A game engine can also provide a useful implementation reference: boardgame.io’s reducer processes game flow and moves, including logging and validation (boardgame.io reducer source).

Assert rules that belong to your game
There is no universal set of board-game invariants. Choose assertions from the rules you implement. Depending on the game, useful checks may include whose turn follows a move, whether resource totals change correctly, or whether a piece occupies the expected space. The boardgame.io reducer is one concrete example of game-specific move processing, not a template for every game’s rules.
