Run a restore drill in an isolated, non-production location, measure recovery time and data age against your recovery objectives, document the results, and repeat the test periodically.
What a restore drill proves
A completed backup job shows that a backup process ran; it does not prove the backup can be recovered or used. AWS Well-Architected identifies assuming a backup is fully operational and recoverable as an anti-pattern. Its guidance recommends periodic recovery tests that validate backup integrity and recovery processes against a workload’s recovery time objective (RTO) and recovery point objective (RPO): AWS Well-Architected REL09-BP04 (versioned April 10, 2023).

NIST makes the same practical point in its 2020 storage guidance: “Perform a periodic test restore to ensure that it is completed successfully and that it meets the required timeframe.” A restore drill should therefore test the outcome, not just the backup or restore job status.

Recovery time objective (RTO)
RTO is the target timeframe for getting the workload back to a usable state. Decide and record the start point and end point you will use to measure it. For example, a restore that finishes quickly but leaves the application unavailable is not yet a usable-service recovery; include the required validation and startup work in the measured interval if your chosen endpoint is service availability.

Recovery point objective (RPO)
RPO describes the amount of data loss an organization can tolerate. For the drill, identify the recovery point you intend to restore and compare it with the newest data actually present after recovery. Record the age of the recovered data or the latest recovered record; a successful restore can still miss the RPO if it recovers data that is too old. NIST defines RPO in its SP 800-209 storage guidance, and AWS recommends testing recovery against both RTO and RPO.
Choose a scenario that matches the risk
Record the workload, its owner, the business effect of downtime, and the scenario under test. A drill can cover an individual file, a database, one system component, a cross-region recovery, or a full workload rebuild. These scenarios prove different things: a file restore will not establish that an entire service and its dependencies can be rebuilt.

Choose a recovery point and scope before restoring. Microsoft’s backup guidance includes point-in-time, cross-region, individual-file, and full-rebuild scenarios; AWS recommends testing a component and, where appropriate, the full architecture while accounting for dependencies. A full recovery test every time may be difficult, so Microsoft advises varying test scope, frequency, and method as needed.

- Prepare a safe target. Restore into an isolated or non-production location so the exercise cannot disrupt production. Apply access controls and data-handling rules suitable for the information being restored. Microsoft’s cloud security benchmark recommends recovery testing in a non-production environment.
- Use the incident runbook. Follow the documented recovery procedure intended for an actual incident instead of improvising a separate shortcut. Note the runbook version. Start the clock at the agreed point and stop it at the agreed usable-service endpoint.
- Validate the restored result. Confirm required files or records are present, integrity checks pass, and intended users or services can access the data. Test the application’s critical functions, then compare the newest recovered item or record with the expected recovery point.
- Compare the outcome with RTO and RPO. Record actual recovery duration and the age of the restored data. Mark each objective as met or missed; do not treat a completed restore job as proof that either objective was achieved.
- Retain evidence, then clean up. Keep the validation results and test record before removing temporary resources. Assign failures and deviations to an owner for remediation, then retest the failed recovery path after the fix.
Keep a useful record of each test
NIST calls for documented disaster-recovery plans and test procedures, while Microsoft recommends documenting test outcomes. Neither source prescribes one mandatory evidence template. A practical record should include:

Make the schedule fit the workload
Repeat restore tests periodically, with scope and method suited to the system’s risk and recovery needs. NIST SP 800-209 recommends periodic test restores but does not set a universal interval. Microsoft says the scope, frequency, and method may vary; a full recovery test each time can be difficult. NIST’s OT Backup Quick Start Guide (SP 1339), published June 17, 2026, says effective operational technology (OT) backup management includes creating backups regularly, testing them, and reviewing them during recovery exercises. That is OT-specific guidance, not a universal schedule for every kind of system.
For ransomware planning, include the availability and integrity of backups in the recovery exercise. CISA’s StopRansomware Guide recommends keeping offline, encrypted backups of critical data and regularly testing backup availability and integrity in a disaster-recovery scenario.

When to use automated restore testing
For supported resources, AWS Backup can schedule restore jobs, monitor recovery duration, and optionally validate results. The service’s restore testing documentation describes supported resource types and the test-resource lifecycle: AWS says test resources are deleted after validation or when the validation window closes. Check the current documentation for resource and account constraints before configuring a test, and retain evidence before temporary resources are removed.
